Positive Thinking, Written Goals, Tithing.

If you're a veteran reader of self-help books, you'll recognize most of what you read in "Im Rich Beyond...".
The authors mix their personal story with how-to's for attaining all you desire in life.
Their message is, basically, this: use positive thinking (the affirmation "I'm Rich Beyond my Wildest Dreams" sung to a familiar tune, for example), written goals (they advise that you make lots of lists of the things you want --in 79 cent notebooks--) and Tithe.
The tithing part (along with those 79 cent notebooks) seem to be a particularly important part of the process.
Did I mention that the authors have a website where their e-books and other products are sold?
In any case, as I said, you won't find much new here. But the writing isn't too bad, and, as long as you don't buy cartons of notebooks (or spend too much time at their website), you could spend your money on worse books than this one. Thus, the three star rating.
However, for a really great book on manifesting what you want, try "Write It Down, Make It Happen." The author of that one has no website, and sells nothing else that I know of. She just outlines this system of ASKING THE UNIVERSE FOR WHAT YOU WANT in a way that contains less marketing.

A Real Life Manual For Getting What You Want In LIfe

I was really lucky to come across "I'm Rich Beyond My Wildest Dreams". This book clearly explains how you can attract abundance, prosperity, and great health in your life.
I have used the manifesting system described in this book to have dinner with one of the most famous personal development speakers and gurus in the world!!! I have used this system to eliminate some serious business problems, such as a really problematic business client.
I'm using this system to manifest more money and wealth in my life than I ever thought possible.
The key is to actually do the exercises that Thomas Pauley and Penelope Pauley discuss. If you want to live the life of your dreams, you cannot go wrong with this book. Buy this book today and start using it!!!
I also recommend that you get Marc Allen's "The Millionaire Course", "Goals" by Brian Tracy, and "Dynamic Laws of Prosperity" by Catherine Ponder.

A Simple Formula That Works

I've read a ton of self help books. All of them offer some good advice, and they often repeat themselves. This book also contains ideas I've read before - but it takes all the new agey melodrama out of the formula. The author gives specifics about what to do to increase your money flow, and doesn't apologize for wanting to "be rich beyond his wildest dreams." I found that refreshing. He calls money what it is: something to have an awful lot of fun with, and also something God given. I was amused to read his comment that this system would work whether you believed in it or not. Well, he's not kidding! I had a "yeah - whatever!" attitude when I started. But after I tried his suggestions, my income started to increase in surprizing ways. I still refer to it often. I recommend it! And check out his website. It's also helpful.

Great gift for my daughter, who has bicycled allover the world.She has now found new places to go. It did slow down our gift opening on Christmas Eve, since she wouldn't put the book down and go on to open her next present. It was ok though, we all needed a break anyway. Great book.

Ken Pohlmann, a professor emeritus and former director of the Music Engineering program at the University of Miami, is a consultant for audio manufacturers. He is the author of several audio engineering books and is a monthly contributor to Sound & Vision magazine. Pohlmann chaired the Audio Engineering Society's International Conference on Digital Audio, and co-chaired the International Conference on Internet Audio.

Good reference for electronics engineers

First off, this book is in its fifth edition, and Amazon has lumped together reviews of all editions of this book. So the oldest review shown, written in 1998, is speaking of the 3rd edition, and reviews written prior to 2005 are talking about the 4th edition.

This book is more about the principles of digital audio hardware design than anything. The author, also a college professor, starts with the absolute beginning and the binary number system, sampling, quantization, aliasing, and dither and then moves into all of the topics that you need to design and analyze modern digital audio systems. However, if the information in the first two chapters is news to you, chances are the rest of the book will be over your head. The book is full of flow charts, frequency response diagrams, and detailed block diagrams of actual systems. What it is lacking in is any kind of signal processing mathematics to explain the detailed theory behind what is being covered. There is a chapter entitled "Digital Signal Processing", but it barely introduces and defines the terms. It does show some assembly code for performing some simple filtering tasks, though, but that's the extent of the coverage. If you didn't know DSP before you read this chapter, you certainly won't know it after you read this chapter. The book does a pretty good job of discussing some of the more popular audio standards including MP3. I think this book is best suited for someone with an electronics/electrical engineering background that already knows the theory of digital signal processing and wants to apply that knowledge to the actual design and analysis of digital audio processing systems. An Excellent Compromize Between Theory And Practice

This book is an excellent primer for current technology in digital audio systems. He keeps the obscure mathematics to a minimum, and introduces you to the great amount of technique available in the field today. I found this book, 1st edition, in the library -- and soon after bought the latest edition. An excellent value for the money, and useful to anyone trying to keep up with the digital techniques.

He was wrong....happily

Professor Pohlmann tried to frighten us in the 1995 edition, he said: I promise I will never write a fourth edition of this title. After laping up the third edition in two woderful weeks, I had to wait for the decision. In 1999 I was hopelessly desperate, but Mr. Pohlmann left a "loophole in (his) vow", as he claims. So, a new gift came to us. Thanks to him, his dedication, and his talent, audio and electronics engineers have a text that covers the totality of the current science of digital audio. For those who read the previous editions, some obvious changes will come up. Some technologies are dead, because it is impossible to resurrect technnologies that the market or the customers have killed (imagine a book about vinile LPs or Betamax VCRs), and other technologies are very alive. Some new features you will find in this edition: DVD (finally an understandable treaty is in our hands), Internet Audio (very topical), new developments in DSP, and some changes made inside previously written chapters (i.e.: the Hoffmann Coding now is in the DVD chapter). For those who have not read the previous editions, this is a very good start in the science of digital audio. If you read the first four chapters very carefully, you are ready to read every single book on the subject that might fall in your hands. I used to recommend the third edition in my college course at Universidad Nacional de Ingenieria. Now my students are encouraged to acquire this new edition, which is indeed the main textbook for my course. I still think that we need a spanish translation of this book.

A Thousand Insights

Although Andre Malraux was not an art historian by profession, he did however write two extraordinary books on the subject of art; a subject which obviously occupied a great deal of his thoughts. This particular book, 'The Voices of Silence', has fared better than the lesser known 'Metamorphosis of the Gods', nevertheless it has still fallen somewhat into obscurity. These books were clearly not written as an introduction to the subject, but assume the reader has a thorough knowledge of art already. They would also probably never find their way onto the required reading list of a university course on art history either. Which is a shame, because they are filled with some of the most startlingly insightful observations. The kind of observations that you don't find in academic books on art, because they do not fall into the prescribed criteria of a historian. Malraux's art books have often been criticized as being too unstructured and directionless; this criticism, while not entirely unfounded, I feel stems from thinking that has been conditioned by the expectations of more scholarly books; which it clearly was not his aim to write. It does not put forth an isolated thesis which is then thoroughly argued to the exclusion of any other possibility, thus closing the case on a particular issue. Instead he showers you with a thousand insights; each one significant enough to potentially lead to a whole other area of inquiry in itself. While he clearly aims at and achieves clarification of his subject (as opposed to obscuring, which French thinkers are often accused of) he also manages to continually deepen the mystery.

If there is an overall or recurring theme to Malraux's writings on art, it is the transformation that various forms in art have undergone through time, and their signification of how man regards himself and his place in the universe. It's noteworthy that he uses the word "metamorphosis" to describe these transformations as opposed to the word "evolution". As Malraux rightly observes, the overlaying of evolutionary theory and notions of "progress" to works of art is misguided. Art has not been on a slow steady path of advancement toward perfection. In fact, forms in art have often degenerated; which he illustrates with an example of the continually abstracted imagery on some ancient coinage. What makes Malraux's writings on art unique is that he always seems to be writing not from the perspective of someone standing on a historical timeline, but rather, from the vantage point of eternity. In other words, not as a chronicler of a linear progression of art productions going on indefinitely into the future, but an observer of the emergence of forms into an everlasting present, and their occasional disappearance. Particularly forms that transmit man's sometimes strong, sometimes tenuous connection with a source, which is the very ground of his being. As the title of his book suggests, these works stand like silent sentinels, continually reminding us not of what we have gained in this "post-enlightenment" world, but what we have lost.

Philosophically there is some overlap between Malraux's writings and the writings of the Traditionalist / Perennial school of thought. Malraux is much less dogmatic though; more conversational in tone. He is not on a mission to reform or convert you. Instead he invites you to pause a moment and allow him to share some of his observations on art, and our place in the larger scheme of things. He sees, for the most part, almost all of man's artworks as a kind of triumph or victory over destiny. All except what he refers to as arts of delectation, meaning, works meant to give only a fleeting pleasure. His insights are so diverse and numerous it is impossible to give a concise summarization of them. There are also a few correctives that he issues in this book; some of which had been said before by other writers. However, to this day their message has still not registered a change in the general perception of these issues, so I guess they bear repeating.

Here are a few excerpts as examples:

p.270 "That ferment of ideas--now bloody, now serene--which we name the Renaissance developed between two phases of Christianity. The Italy that was coming to birth was not to be a land of agnostic coteries; it was the court of Julius II. In fact it is impossible to understand Italian art, and Giotto's to begin with, if we read into the plastic genius of the Renaissance any anti-Christian bias... Even Raphael did not think himself less Christian than Rembrandt claimed to be."

p.481-482 "The anti-religious mood of the eighteenth century looked for precursors; but, though there had been Greek skeptics, there had never been a culture pledged to skepticism... the Eternal in its death throes was not replaced by any sorry substitute, until an adversary worthy of it had been discovered... and that enemy was History."

p.525 "But delectation is not concerned with values, only with sensations and thus with moments only; whereas true arts and cultures relate Man to duration, sometimes to eternity, and make of him something other than the most favored denizen of a universe founded on absurdity."

p.570-572 "...nevertheless implicit in these creations is an awareness of the universe, an awareness quite different from ours and unconcerned with history, involving a union with the cosmos and not a surrender to chaos; a conquest, not an abdication."

I'll close this review with a quote from another writer; the scholar Mircea Eliade, "...it is more probable that the desire felt by the man of traditional societies to refuse history, and to confine himself to an indefinite repetition of archetypes, testifies to his thirst for the real and his terror of losing himself by letting himself be overwhelmed by the meaninglessness of profane existence."

The Bollingen Edition is not what you're looking for

After luxuriating in the magnificent Doubleday hardcover edition of Malraux's followup book "Metamorphosis of the Gods," I ordered the Bollingen edition of "Voices of Silence" with great anticipation. I was horrified by what I found. Like "Metamorphosis," this book is stuffed with hundreds of reproductions of the artworks under discussion, but where Doubleday provided crisp, accurate images, the expensive Bollingen edition looks like it was printed on a home laser printer. Reproductions are so muddy and washed out that at times I can barely even tell what I'm looking at.

I ordered a 50-year-old used copy of the Doubleday hardcover edition of this book and the photo reproduction quality is much better. Really, for a book that depends so heavily on image quality, this is inexcusable - especially for a $50 paperback.

I own many excellent books published by the Bollingen Foundation, but this one is a real disappointment.

Out of the Depths

640 pages of insights and aphorisms. Academic art critics will not approve of M's work because he does not develop arguments in a conventional way but unveils insights and, even more unacceptably, lists no sources. Others will revel in this philosophical paean. As the title indicates, M. looks at how plastic arts communicate beyond their original settings and purpose. Well aware of the religious function of most art for much of history, M reflects upon its other functions. The translation is first rate. the illustrations are not of high quality in the paperback edition. cannot think of who would not benefit from this book.

***DECLASSIFIED*** Selous Scouts-Top Secret War

This book should be a mandatory read for Non-commissioned officers and Officers serving in special mission units or special operations the world over. In the counter-insurgency / low-intensity conflict arena there are many valuable lessons to be learned from this text, and for the armchair historian or casual reader the story is still gripping enough to keep you enthralled to the last page. Basically this is story of the birth and death of one of the most feared insurgency units of the time, as told by the founder of this outstanding unit; Ron Reid-Daly. It covers the units training, selection, operations, and personalities of the unit with the war being the tool that propels the story and evolution of the unit. One of the most remarkable aspects of Selous Scouts was their employment of pseudo-terrorist techniques, which were used to melt into know terrorist cells, to either eliminate the terrorist themselves or direct other assets to the known cells to be neutralized. While conducting these type operations the Selous Scouts maintained the cover of being a combat tracking (mantracking) unit, as to keep their true purpose under wraps from the rest of the Rhodesian Security Forces. I would also like to point out they were truly all trained trackers and maintained this capability to superb levels of proficiency. This book has been re-release as "Pamwe Chete - The Legend of the Selous Scouts" by Reid-Daly and is a completely revamped version of "SELOUS SCOUTS - Top Secret War" (original title). If you have read the original edition you will enjoy this one much better. Many areas in the book have been rewritten and their are many additions and details added to the text. Many of the names of individual have been added into this text, originally kept exempt for security and safety reasons in this version. Also there are many new photographs added and the Illustrations are a lot crisper. One of the biggest treats in the new edition is the added appendix covering; roll of honor, wing nominal roll, awards and citations. This version truly opens the door to this once `Top Secret" organization of combat trackers turned pseudo-terrorist specialist. Bottom line BOTH versions are GREAT reads!

First time I have EVER returned something to Amazon

This book was almost useless. The description said it contained 40 recipes, but the examples in this book were far from usable.

It really looked like the author just printed some sample code from the PhoneGap API and provided no setup, no explanation and no surrounding code for the examples he gave. The first 5 chapters were each dedicated to portions of the PhoneGap API with no information other than the code to access:

Geolocation(ch1),
Files(ch2),
Audio/video(ch3),
Contacts(ch4),
and Battery/network info (ch5).

All this information is available on their website. The whole point of a book is to give you more of an explanation and walk you through some examples. I've found better information on the first page of a Google search.

I usually keep books around, even if they only have 1 good chapter that I can refer to later. But, this was so useless and horribly disorganized, I decided I didn't want to keep it around as a reminder of the $50 that I wasted.

PhoneGap Mobile Application Development Cookbook (2012) provides HTML/JS developers with recipes for using the PhoneGap framework to create and build mobile applications that run on multiple platforms including Android and iOS. Written by Matt Gifford who has a long background in rich internet application development using Adobe's Cold Fusion product, the book offers a no frills tour of the PhoneGap/Cordova API with an emphasis on taking advantage of the various capabilities of mobile devices. This book provides a solid tour under the hood of the Cordova API suitable mainly for experienced JavaScript coders who want to exploit native device capabilities. Designers primarily interested in using the more recent PhoneGap Build service to quickly compile and deploy their creations will not find much here to meet their needs. Project managers will find this book useful for making decisions about the kinds of things the PhoneGap/Cordova architecture can accomplish.

As one might expect, the bulk of PhoneGap Mobile Application Development Cookbook consists mainly of code samples which are clearly presented with a sensible number of helpful illustrations. The first half of the book presents recipes for detecting and using movement and location, file system storage and local databases (including SQLite), working with device based audio/video/photography capabilities, managing contacts, and some native events such as application/battery/network status. The second half of the book provides overviews of how to implement and use the XUI and JQuery Mobile JavaScript libraries followed by chapters revealing how to create native plugins and encourages exploration of the growing repository of plugins already contributed by the PhoneGap development community.
As is inexplicably the case with many software cookbooks, the last chapter is where you'll probably want to start as this is where you will find information on downloading and installing the Cordova codebase as well as workflows for iOS developers in X-Code, Android developers in Eclipse, and for others using Adobe Dreamweaver.

PhoneGap Mobile Application Development Cookbook provides a disclaimer of which you should take note: "During the writing process for this book, the project itself went through a number of version releases, the latest being version 2.0, and as new versions are released, inevitably some properties, minor functions, and details change." Indeed, as of the date this review was written, the project is now at version 3.3.0. A lot has happened on the mobile development scene since 2012 resulting in some glaring omissions from this book's table of contents. Most notably absent is any discussion of making use of the Adobe Edge tools in conjunction with PhoneGap. Also absent is discussion of the Adobe PhoneGap Build implementation which allows users to compile their mobile applications in the cloud. PhoneGap Mobile Development Cookbook does not provide much guidance regarding the PhoneGap XML configuration file where permissions, metadata, and other application critical information is stored and must usually be modified before building. (With some effort, this information can be found online but even the PhoneGap.com documentation itself is somewhat scattered.)

While it may be obvious to many, I would gently remind readers that successfully packaging a mobile application using PhoneGap is hardly tantamount to having your app accepted and distributed to market via an app store. It is quite possible to code and package a mobile application which will be summarily rejected by Apple, Google or Microsoft for reasons entirely unrelated to your code. Submitting your PhoneBuild mobile application to an app store is not covered in PhoneGap Mobile Application Development Cookbook.

In summary, Gifford has provided a wide ranging first look at the PhoneGap API. One can hardly understate the rapid rate of change taking place in this area, however. For this reason, the 2012 edition of PhoneGap Mobile Application Development Cookbook is probably best suited as a handy overview of capabilities rather than as an up-to-the-minute reference. The fact remains that for developers who prefer not to commit themselves to drinking only one flavor of Kool-Aid , PhoneGap provides a refreshing cross-platform alternative. For this reason alone, PhoneGap and this book are worth exploring.

A quite good reference

PhoneGap it's a great tool to build Android apps, and this book it's a quite good reference to it.
The book covers 9 main areas (from accelerometer and geolocation to contacts, jQuery Mobile and plugins). In total there are more the 40 recipes.
Every section is full of code with explanations that sometimes are too short but always useful.
Perhaps the price (bot printed or ebook version) it's a little too high.

What the Germans were thinking in 1945

Germany was clearly ahead of the rest of the world in aeronautics during World War II. And this book shows what the most advanced thinkers in aircraft were thinking about at the end of the war.

In the matter of jet engines, both the BMW 003 and the Junkers Jumo 004 engines were in production and powering aircraft, the Arado 234 and the Me 262 respectively. There was also the Argus As 109-014 pulse jet used to power the V-1. All of these engines were of sufficiently low power that at least two engines would be necessary in even a small fighter. Coming along though was the Heinkel HeS 011 as well as improved and upgraded engines from Junkers and BMW.

These newer engines, which never made it into production were expected to have enough power that single engine fighters were to be possible. It seems that all of the German aircraft manufacturers produced designs intended to use these jet engines. This book goes through the German manufacturers one at a time, starting with Arado and going to Messerschmitt. A lot of the proposed designs are rather strange looking. A lot of the designs, however, look like they could have been the starting point for planes produced later. The BMW Ausfuhrung looks a lot like the British Vampire. The Focke Wulf Ta 183 could well have evolved into the Mig 15. And the Messerschmitt P.1101 looks almost identical to the Bell X-5. (The Bell X-5 was at one time being considered as a low-cost tactical fighter, but its aerodynamics were so bad that it was cancelled.)

I can't imagine where the authors were able to get so many drawings of these advanced aircraft. I have spent a lot of time looking at this book.

What can I say ? Marek Rys is part of the inner circle of the Luft'46 fraternity along with such luminaries as Manfred Griehl and Dan Johnson, his artwork is alongside Justo Mirando of Reich Dreams fame. I went to a lot of trouble to track down all 4 of Mr Rys's publications pver the years culminating in finally getting Vol 4 recently so I know what to expect as this volume is two volumes in one book.
If you are new to the Luft'46 scene it is suffice to say that it focus's on all the rather strange, whacky and incredible ideas the German scientists and designers came up with in Nazi Germany from 1933-1945. If you have an interest in aviation history and what the Germans were up to between 1933-1945, this book will be of great interest.
Luft'46 nuts will relish this book!
It is interesting to see how the German ideas directly influenced so many aviation ideas directly after the war and beyond to today, their influence can not be denied.

A Useful Book

This book fills the niche for those interested in "what ifs" with respect to German aviation during WW II. Nice to see (from the Allied point-of-view) some of the reasons for failure-both political and from an engineering perspective. However this book will probably appeal to a special audience

More than they seem

Amazing and compelling. These books may be listed as "fantasy"; however, there are kernels of ethics, morality, spirituality, life lessons, logic, reason, and much more within and scattered throughout all of these novels. They are both escapist and relaxation stories, and deep soul touching and intelligent personal discourse allowing the reader to see themselves and those around them as if from the perspective of a disembodied or unattached observer - it is stunning when this realization finally comes to you. I have yet to find any book or novel throughout those within the Wizards of the Coast line (Dungeons and Dragons, Forgotten Realms) that does not have merit, in one way or another. My children have just begun reading these, and they are starting to see this and ask questions, allowing discourse and enlightenment. I thank the authors for this wonderful gift.

To read, or not to read: that is the question.

Bought the Omnibus to reread again, makes it convenient having 3 in 1.

I was given the 1st book in the trilogy when it first came out as a Christmas present back in the 80's. Got around reading it a few months later, honestly couldn't put it down.

After reading the 1st one I lucked out getting the 2nd one when it was released, to be honest, a saleswoman at the bookstore (Waldon's) screwed up and sold me a copy that she grabbed from storeroom, the shipment of them had just arrived and where not to be sold until midnight that evening. They sold out that evening within an hour.

It's one of those books in a series that you'll cram time to read whether waiting in line, riding a bus, sitting in the backseat of a car, washing your clothes at the laundromat, or on the toilet.

If you like magic, DnD style storyline/world, characters of varies alignments, good and not so good working together in order to battle a powerful foe, in a well thought out world, then this is a great series to read. Raistlin Majere being one of my favorite characters, he's good at being bad.

Word of advice, read these 3 books (Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning) before picking up any other Dragonlance book.

Some of the later books are hit and miss when it comes to a good story, but for me the first three are by far the best.

About fifteen years ago I read The Death Gate Cycle by Weis and Hickman and really enjoyed it. I picked that series up again this year and, to my surprise, devoured it with the same enthusiasm I had as a child. That series was well written, engaging, mature, and nuanced. The first book took a bit to get into, but then each book after was better and better.

I bought the Dragonlance Chronicles from Weis and Hickman hoping for more of the same, but I have to say I was disappointed. Maybe the target audience is younger, or maybe it was a more junior work on the part of the authors, but for whatever reasons this book felt much more like cookie-cutter fantasy fiction. While there were a few unexpected turn of events, for the most part you can guess at the ending the whole time. The characters, while each "developing" throughout the novel all still feel a little thin and predictable (e.g. The spoiled child learns to grow up and be selfless and humble). Pretty basic stuff here. Not a lot of depth of character and not a lot to grapple with. Pretty straightforward good guys vs. bad guys, and you know what side people land on quickly.

Unlike the Death Gate Cycle this was a series that I would have enjoyed in my early teen years but is too simplistic and formulaic for me as an adult. If you're reading this review and considering this series for yourself or as a gift, I'd actually suggest just jumping skipping this bland appetizer and going straight to the delicious main course that is The Death Gate Cycle.
