Twenty Letters to a Friend

Book Review

By Richard E. Noble

"The last hours were nothing but a slow strangulation. The death agony was horrible. He literally choked to death as we watched. At what seemed like the very last moment he suddenly opened his eyes and cast a glance over everyone in the room. It was a terrible glance, insane or perhaps angry and full of fear of death and the unfamiliar faces of the doctors bent over him. The glance swept over everyone in a second. Then something incomprehensible and awesome happened that to this day I can't forget and don't understand. He suddenly lifted his left hand as though he was pointing to something above and bringing down a curse on us all. The gesture was incomprehensible and full of menace, and no one could say to whom or at what it might be directed. The next moment after a final effort, the spirit wrenched itself free of the flesh."
This exact scene was played out in the movie with Robert De Nero portraying Stalin. And I must say he captured the drama and intensity just as it was written.

In my humble opinion, this is a Great Russian Tragic Novel provided for us by the soft spoken daughter of a giant of infamy.

Her father was one of the most powerful and nefarious men in all history. Her mother:
"It was not the thing at that time for a woman, especially a woman Party member, to spend much time with her children ... I cannot recall her kissing or caressing me ever ... My nurse saw that it was so, that my mother was really tired of being alive. But it never occurred to her or to anybody else that she was capable of taking her own life within a matter of days."

Svetlana was clearly a sensitive but lonely child. She was lost in this world but yet it was her world. She loved her mother dearly. Her mother killed herself at age 31. She could no longer follow blindly behind the man she had chosen to love. As it seems with Papa Joe, it was his way or a bullet to the brain - administered by yourself or an "assistant."

Her brother tried to shoot himself but failed - which made Papa Joe laugh - a boy too inept to even complete a successful suicide. Papa Joe's little boy eventually died of alcoholism.

Her mother's sister and her husband were sent to prison. Her daddy had no mercy even for those in his own family. Papa Joe was austere with himself and his own.

"Once he had cast out of his heart someone he had known a long time, once he had mentally relegated that someone to the ranks of his enemies, it was impossible to talk to him about that person any more."
Before killing herself, her mother wrote a letter of "resignation" to big Joe, the author explains. Joe went to take one last look at his bride in her coffin. He stared, then pushed the coffin away from him. He didn't attend her funeral - she had become the enemy, even dead.

This is quite an outstanding historical portrait. The author writes beautifully - clearly she has the hand and the heart of a poet.

The book is one harsh, unbelievable tale after another told with sensitivity, clarity and compassion. The author brings us into the book as friends. She wrote these letters to her friends and then left it as such for us all when the book was picked up by the world. This was extremely appealing.

Many historical Russian characters are talked about - the hated Mr. Beria among the foremost. She closes her book courageously, in the spirit of the eternal optimist:

"This is how I would like to end my letters to you my dear friend ... Let the judging be done by those who come later ... let it be left to new people to whom these years in Russia will be as remote and inexplicable, as terrible and strange, as the reign of Ivan the Terrible. But I do not think they'll call our era a `progressive one' or that they will say it was all for the 'good of Russia'. Hardly ...
"But I hope they won't forget that what is Good never dies - That it lived on in the hearts of men even in the darkest times and was hidden where no one thought to look for it, that it never died out or disappeared completely.
"Everything on our tormented earth that is alive and breathes, that blossoms and bears fruit, lives only by virtue of and in the name of Truth and Good."

Lyrical and beautifully written
By Rebecca
Svetlana was the daughter of Stalin. I think most people who buy this book already know that so I don't think I am spoiling anything. I wasn't aware because it was just the next book to read in my project of reading biographies A-Z in my local library.

As I read, she kept mentioning this powerful and fear inspiring father but his name wasn't on the book cover or inside flap description and since the format of the book isn't like a biography with lots of names and dates I couldn't figure out who this guy was and was somewhat skeptical, thinking really, just how scary can your dad be, then I read Stalin and understood she wasn't exaggerating.

This is not a typical memoir. It is a series of memories written in a beautiful and lyrical manner. It is compelling and after reading, it remains haunting somewhat.

It is not hard facts and details and makes you want to know more and understand more.

Would also recommend: Svetlana an Intimate Portrait by Enzo Biagi and Svetlana: The Incredible Story of Stalin's Daughter by Martin Ebon and her next book Only One Year. All help fill in many of the gaps in 20 Letters and also reveal Svetlana to be a complex and troubled person. Unfortunately they are from the late 60's and apparently there is quite a bit more that happened in her troubled life after these books.

Twenty Letters to a Friend
By David M. Burke MD
This is a well translated history of Stalin personal life from her own perspective written using the literature style of writing letters to a friend, which are sketches depicting her relationship with her father at different stages of her life. The first one depicts the death of Stalin in which she vividly describes the dynamics between Stalin associate (Beria etc...)
I have the opportunity to own some of the letters she wrote to her editor written in English and it sound that she is a stickler for details, which makes these accounts most believable.
This book offers a unique opportunity to see a different facet of Stalin personality from her perspective as a child and her coming to age. The book gives account of the discovery of her father true personality, which she started to uncover after the tragic death of her mother and subsequent distancing of herself and her father.

The Nearest Exit (Milo Weaver), by Olen Steinhauer

Faced with the potential dissolution of his marriage and the end of his quiet, settled life, reluctant spy Milo Weaver has no choice but to return to his old job as a "tourist" for the CIA. But before he can get back to the dirty work of espionage, he has to prove his worth to his new bosses. Armed with a stack of false identities, Milo heads back to Europe, and for nearly three months every assignment is executed perfectly. Then he's instructed to kill the fifteen-year-old daughter of Moldovan immigrants, and make the body disappear. No questions. For Milo, it's an impossible task, but ignoring his handlers is equally untenable. Suddenly he's in a dangerous position, caught between right and wrong, between powerful self-interested foes, between patriots and traitors―especially now that he has nothing left to lose.

From Publishers Weekly
Milo Weaver, a former field agent with the CIA's clandestine Department of Tourism, returns to action after a stint in prison for alleged financial fraud in this intense sequel to The Tourist. His handlers want Weaver to pursue a mole rumored to have infiltrated the CIA's black-ops department, but with his loyalty in question, he must first undergo some test missions, one of which is to kill the 15-year-old daughter of Moldovan immigrants now living in Berlin. Such a horrific assignment further weakens Weaver's already wavering enthusiasm for his secret life, and he becomes increasingly preoccupied with reconnecting with his estranged wife and child. When bombshell revelations rock Weaver's world, he vows to somehow put international intelligence work behind him. Can he do so without jeopardizing his and his family's safety? Steinhauer's adept characterization of a morally conflicted spy makes this an emotionally powerful read. Author tour. (May)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Since the events of The Tourist (2009), Milo Weaver has served time in prison, worked in administration, and tried to reconnect with his wife and daughter. But talk therapy is hard when you’re trained to keep secrets. When asked to return to the field, he agrees, although, because of his disgust with the Department of Tourism (a black-ops branch of the CIA), he plans to feed information to his father, Yevgeny Primakov, the “secret ear” of the UN. But his handlers don’t trust him, either, giving him a series of vetting assignments that culminates in an impossible loyalty test: the abduction and murder of a 15-year-old girl. Ironically, Weaver is then tasked with finding a security breach that threatens the very existence of Tourism—and the lives of the Tourists. Seeing his own brutal compatriots as humans, he does his best to save the thing he despises, a conundrum that pretty much sums up the shades of gray that paint this modern-day espionage masterpiece. The Tourist was impressive, proving that Steinhauer had the ability to leap from the historical setting of his excellent Eastern European quintet to a vividly imagined contemporary landscape. But this is even better, a dazzling, dizzyingly complex world of clandestine warfare that is complicated further by the affairs of the heart. Steinhauer never forgets the human lives at stake, and that, perhaps, is the now-older Weaver’s flaw: he is too human, too attached, to be the perfect spy. His failure to save the girl he was told to kill threads the whole book like barbed wire. --Keir Graff

Review

“The Nearest Exit should take its place among the best of the spy thrillers.” ―Associated Press

“The Nearest Exit, a terrific second installment in Olen Steinhauer's ‘Tourist' spy series about Milo Weaver . . . [His] company is at least as valuable to the series' appeal as is his flair for international trickery.” ―Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“[Steinhauer's] descriptions of European cities and their residents are full of life. But Weaver is the novel's gem. . . . In many ways, this is a classic spy novel, but it's Weaver's angst that lifts the book to a compelling level of freshness.” ―USA Today

“Steinhauer delivers another winner in The Nearest Exit, a spy novel that asks deeper questions about the price we extract from individuals in the pursuit of the so-called greater good.” ―Los Angeles Times

“The Nearest Exit, Steinhauer's follow-up novel, reprises the themes of The Tourist with even more success. . . . Like le Carr's George Smiley, Weaver is a richly imagined creation with a scarred psyche and a complex backstory that elevates him above the status of run-of-the-mill world-weary spook.” ―The New York Times Book Review

4 1/2 Stars -- Steinhauer Scores Big Again!
By Bobbewig
The Nearest Exit is an excellent follow-up to Steinhauer's The Tourist. Like The Tourist, The Nearest Exit represents a first-class combination of complex, intelligent plotting and multi-dimensional characterization. Although, I have to admit that by the end of the first half of the book I was feeling that Steinhauer's latest was going to fall far short of The Tourist in terms of being a well-crafted espionage thriller. Be assured, however, that the second half of the book is so strong that it more than made up for my doubts and concerns about the first half. The Nearest Exit ultimately delivers an exciting story in which Milo Weaver, faced with the end of his quiet, settled life, has no choice but to turn back to his old job as a "tourist." But before being able to do so, he must prove his loyalty. This catapults him into a dangerous position; one in which he must decide between right and wrong, between powerful self-interested foes, between patriots and traitors and between life and death. Be aware that The Nearest Exit, perhaps even more than did The Tourist, requires the reader to use all of his/her mental abilities to help wade through all the layers of deceit and manipulation that must be uncovered to get to the truth. Further, you should be aware that The Nearest Exit may not be the book to read if you are looking to read a story that will have you physically trying to catch your breath in order to keep up with all the action and adventure. I highly recommend The Nearest Exit to anyone that enjoyed The Tourist, as well as to anyone who enjoys a complex, intelligent, moving spy novel in the best tradition of John Le Carre and Len Deighton (at least in their early days), Graham Greene and Alan Furst. I, for one, can't wait to "travel" with "tourist" Milo Weaver on his next thrilling, mentally-challenging, emotionally charged adventure. I suspect I'll have about a year to prepare myself to tour with Milo.

This Is No Tourist
By San Fran Dan
The Nearest Exit is a pretty good spy novel but not in the same league with The Tourist (the book to which this is a sequel).

I will not restate the plot, others have. Suffice it to say that the plot is far less interesting than that of The Tourist. So too are the characters. We get one interesting new person (Ms. Schwartz) but otherwise we get stock - Oskar (her assistant), her boss, Milo's new boss, Senator Irwin - none of them become real to the reader.

The book bogs down in the middle, including two terrible chapters involving Milo, his wife, Rita, and their couples therapist. These are so bad, they are painful (and boring) to read. None of the dialogue seems even slightly real. The chapters should have been omitted entirely and Milo's epiphany (which takes place in the second of the two chapters) placed elsewhere.

The ending is completely unreal but is suitably complex. The last 100-150 pages of the book, and the beginning, are a good deal better than the rest. The ending leaves room for a third book if the author so chooses.

I am not saying don't read the book, I am just saying it disappoints when compared to the book it follows, the superb "The Tourist."

A worthy sequel to an outstanding spy thriller
By S. McGee
Having loved The Tourist, I knew that I'd enjoy this sequel, if only to find out what happens to Milo Weaver after he goes on the run in order to clear his name -- and ends up losing his family and his freedom in order to do so. Now Weaver is out of jail and back in the 'Department of Tourism' -- but he's more deeply alienated than ever, and struggling to find a way to do his job in a way that doesn't violate what moral code he has managed to hang on to. The crunch comes when Weaver gets his latest assignment: a kill order for a very unlikely target that he just doesn't understand and can't bring himself to act on.

The plot hangs on that 'kill order', its target and the fallout from Weaver's qualms of conscience -- and it's an excellent and convoluted one, that never left me thinking "yeah, I saw that coming 50 pages ago." Many of the elements that I loved about the first book are still here in abundance -- the nuanced portrayal of characters who are never black and white and always human, such as the German spy who stops off nightly for a bottle of wine and a Snickers bar at her local shop but is quite capable of holding Milo Weaver hostage and using enhanced interrogation techniques on him -- but who later will go out of her way to assist his quest for some kind of justice and retribution for the TRULY villainous. Milo Weaver's world is a gritty, grey one, and even the end of the book doesn't offer much consolation if you're looking for a warm and fuzzy ending to his story. (Perhaps volume #3 in the Milo Weaver saga is in the works?)

I wouldn't suggest reading this book without reading its predecessor. True, the two stories are theoretically able to stand alone, but the characters' actions won't make much sense in isolation, particularly Milo's relationship with his wife and child and his birth father. That shouldn't be a hardship, as the first book is very good, and if you don't enjoy it, you won't like this that much. I've rated this 4.5 stars and rounded down, simply because the plot is even more convoluted, darting back and forth in time and space and character point of view, requiring even more concentration on the part of the reader. (It's not a book to pick up and put down casually, then try to reimmerse yourself in the story hours later...) There are a few loose ends in the plot line -- nothing that really destroys the pleasure of the book, but that can niggle away afterwards.

Highly recommended to spy novel afficionados.

I got this book for my little girl (8) who loves cats. She read the first book, and wanted the other two. This one was not a disappointment. She giggled and smiled the whole time she was reading it. Now, she wants the last one in the series. The books are written very well.

Language Exploration and Awareness: A Resource Book for Teachers, by Larry Andrews

This book shows English teachers how they can expand their curriculum beyond the traditional emphases on grammar and syntax, to help their students learn about the many aspects of the English language--including general semantics, regional and social dialects, syntax, spelling, history of the English language, social language conventions, lexicography, and word origins. The text reviews basic aspects of English language study in classrooms, then illustrates how teachers can create student-centered, inquiry-oriented activities for the learners in their classrooms. Written from a "language in cultural and social context" perspective, this text stresses the uses of authentic language as it is used by real people for real purposes in diverse social contexts.

Clear, practical, and reader accessible, the fully revised and updated second edition of this text:
* emphasizes how language is a distinctly human activity and how successful language use is dependent on appropriate choices driven by social context.
* Demonstrates--through numerous sample classroom activities, many of which have been prepared by classroom teachers--how language study can be more meaningful and enjoyable for students.
*Features two unique chapters--one on the languages of intolerance and discrimination and one on how teachers can help English-as-a-Second-Language learners in mainstream classrooms.
*Includes "For Your Information and Practice" activities in each chapter to help readers deepen and clarify their understandings of the content.

A Great Way to Approach Linguistics
By Dwise1
First of all, I have the pleasure of being in Dr. Andrews' Principles of Linguistics class. This book is being used as the required text for class and it is simply WONDERFUL. The text is written for students and teachers in such a manner that it is easy to understand and relate to. (Unlike some texts which are written simply for the community of the academic "elite.")
Dr. Andrews takes a wonderful approach to Linguistics, emphasizing the importance of context in any situation to determine what language use is appropriate. Rather than simply telling students that word usage or sentence structure is wrong, this book both analyzes reasons for why these uses may be deemed incorrect and, at the same time, urges teachers to recognize the individuality and expression that can be found in language.
Overall, this book makes studying Linguistics a sheer joy. I can't remember how many teachers pushed correct grammar usage as the primary focus of English classes in high school. This book really tries to step away from that habit and promote a true love of language. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to study Linguistics, teach English, or simply explore the wonders of our own language!

Book 3 in the Seven Kingdoms Chronicles. In this sequel to The Crown of Eden, Thomas Williams takes the reader back to the mythical world of the Seven Kingdoms with a compelling medieval story of freedom, justice, and forbidden love.

When political conspirators murder his father, Prince Lanson of Lochlaund flees for his life. He becomes the protector of a beautiful tavern maid who is hiding from the moral condemnation of the powerful Lochlaund Kirk, a religious establishment ruled by a lecherous bishop which has a stranglehold on the kingdom. Ultimately Lanson must decide whether to give the woman over to the kirk's legalistic justice or defy the kirk and save her life by wedding her—a choice which could lead to a holy war.

From Publishers Weekly
Williams's second novel in his Seven Kingdoms Chronicles series is a sugarcoated Sunday school lesson at best and bland, formulaic pulp fiction at worst. Set in the same mythical, medieval world of the first installment, The Crown of Eden, the heroes and heroines must survive an oppressive kingdom whose Pharisaic ruling clergy enforce rigidly ascetic laws with no regard for mercy. A disgraced maiden running from the law falls in with a prince fleeing assassination; their adventures ultimately lead to the uniting of the seven kingdoms, the destruction of the evil witch Morgultha, and of course a lavish wedding. Along the way they learn of faith, love, mercy, evil and redemption. Unfortunately, this is far below the level of the Christian fantasies of C.S. Lewis or J.R.R. Tolkien. The plot seems driven by the author's efforts to deliver minisermons on religious subjects and to illustrate Christian principles and parables. The morals are too often delivered in stilted speeches and dialogues between cardboard characters; the wicked are evil through and through, while the righteous have hearts of gold and great physical beauty. The character references to Mary Magdalene and Christ are painfully blunt. As fantasy, the novel is disappointingly unoriginal and suffers from several breaches in logic in its mechanical plot. Young adults in search of light reading and a little sugar (in the form of princes, maidens, castles, kidnappings, rescues and a dash of true love) to help their religion go down smoothly may enjoy this; others should pass.

Editorial Review

Not since I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, by Stephen R. Donaldson, have I become so engrossed in a novel as when reading The Devil's Mouth. The story is filled with intrigue and suspense. The characters are well developed: the reader becomes acquainted with the major characters, identifying and sympathizing with some, and feeling righteous indignation toward others.

Conflict between the leaders of the "kirk" (church) and the book's hero, Prince Lanson, adds an ingredient to the story that is highly relevant to modern readers. The tension between strict obedience to law with severe punishment for any violation on the one hand, and compassion, mercy, and forgiveness on the other makes for thoughtful reading. Conversations between the adversaries contain thought-provoking arguments that stimulate understanding. These exchanges are not dry dialogue. The reader gets mentally involved in the discussion.

In the story an effort is being made to form a confederation of the Seven Kingdoms in fulfillment of an old prophecy. There is treachery on the part of those who wish to prevent the confederation. Assassinations, kidnaping, exciting escapes, sword fights, and battle scenes are so well described you feel like you are there. Through it all a beautiful love story is tastefully developed between Prince Lanson and a commoner, the beautiful Evalonne, who has become a "fallen woman." In the end this love story provides a marvelous analogy of the gospel. the innocent suffers the punishment intended for the guilty, as love constrains willing substitution.

The Devil's Mouth is excellent fiction. Action, adventure, heroes and villians, good versus evil, and the ultimate triumph of right over wrong combine to make this book a must for Christian readers.

--Larry Branum in Gospel Tidings

Spellbinding! Tom Williams does it again!
By Sam McCormick
This is one of the most captivating stories you will ever read. It is the tale of a young prince driven from his homeland by usurpers and a lovely woman whose ruined life brought her to the brink of a horrifying death. Williams unfolds the story in such a gripping way that you will resent the intrusion of duty when you are forced to put the book down and do other things. I'm an early riser (5 AM most days), and I found myself reading this novel until 2 AM, then getting up at 5 AM and continuing to read. And it isn't just a beautiful love story, though it is that, every bit. You see into the hearts and souls of the people in the story, understand the dilemmas they face, and their thoughts and feelings as they make their choices and live out the scenes that bring the story to the pages. You may see shadows and outlines of difficult choices you have made in your life, and which you may yet face. Read this story. You'll thank yourself for choosing it.

okay
By J. Saenz
I was eager to get this one after reading the first book. It was definitely a page turner, and kept me up very late a couple of nights. Contrary to the editorial, I agree with the reviewer that said that not all characters are either totally good or totally evil, but many are. One or two characters surprised me late in the book. It's true that the male protagonist is a pure prince who can do no evil, but the other main character in the book is more complex. Like it or not, reformation-era theology permeates the book. However, it was fun to read. The main gripe that I have with it is that it is too short, and moved along too fast. The world of the Seven Kingdoms could be better developed...as it stands, each kingdom seems pretty much as any other. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading it. Moves fast and is fairly enjoyable light reading.

Long-awaited, and even better than the first
By A Customer
When I read The Crown of Eden, my biggest disappointment was that Williams had not yet published a follow-up book. Finally, here it is, and it's even better than The Crown of Eden.
Welcome back to the Seven Kingdoms. It has been a year and a few months since The Crown of Eden's end, and a certain king (who will remain nameless because I don't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't read the first book) is a new father and continuing his quest (which will also not be mentioned, for the same above reason). This book follows-up on the celebrated heros and advesaries of The Crown of Eden but focuses on two new characters and their plights. Just as The Crown of Eden had wonderfully deep discussions about fate verses free will and the ends justifying the means verses doing what is "right", The Devil's Mouth has incredible truths balancing mercy and justice, suffering and forgiveness, and temptation and blessing. Williams does a beautiful job bringing his characters to life and pulling his audience into their world and perils. I have several especially memorable sentances underlined in my copy. This story is about a commoner named Evalonne, whose life is so terrible that at one point the only reason she does not give-up and die is that she fears going to hell. Opposite her is Prince Lanson, of a lesser of the Kingdoms than Meridan, whose purity and chivalry rival Aradon's. The Kirk, a religious establishment that rules by fear and condemns sinners without mercy, is a strong presence in Prince Lanson's kingdom. Ultimately, Lanson must decide whether the Kirk is right or wrong in its practices and teachings, and his choice, influenced by the fallen woman Evalonne, changes the fate of all of the Seven Kingdoms. Weaved into the story are adventures, deceptions, prophecies, joys, and gut-wrenching hardships. This is a glorious read for any fan of fantasy, middle-ages, chivalry, adventure, or philosophy. As a side note, I strongly recommend that when you get this book, you DO NOT READ THE BACK OF IT. It spoils a few things and misrepresents the fullness of this book.

Universal Principles of Design, Revised and Updated: 125 Ways to Enhance Usability, Influence Perception, Increase Appeal, Make Better Desi

Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design work—until now.

Universal Principles of Design, Revised and Updated is a comprehensive, cross-disciplinary encyclopedia of design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, it pairs clear explanations of every design concept with visual examples of the concepts applied in practice. From the "80/20” rule to chunking, from baby-face bias to Occam's razor, and from self-similarity to storytelling, every major design concept is defined and illustrated for readers to expand their knowledge.

This landmark reference will become the standard for designers, engineers, architects, and students who seek to broaden and improve their design expertise.

If You are Creative, You Should Have Designs on This Book
By The RBG Review
If you want to think like Einstein, DaVinci, Newton, Kepler, Gates and Jobs all rolled into one, this book is your cup of Eureka! It gets right to to heart of what makes design, any design: graphic, mechanical, architectural, technological, programming work for the customer/user. As you read over this wide range of examples of what makes great design, it begins to give the reader insights on how great designs work, how good designs become great and how it's time to drop those things that just aren't working. If we are in a business, any business, we must create and provide what users/customers want in a way that they want, a way that is clear, a way that is inviting. Nobody buys great ideas if they're to vague or shoved down their throat. A book of good examples to emulate and bad examples to avoid.

Good high level discussion of Design Principles.
By Alan C. Bryant
Review is for both the Kindle and hardcover versions of this book.

An easy to use, high level reference of various design principles. A good reference for students, designers, user interface experts or anyone involved in creating, maintaining or managing a product. The language is concise, the principles are presented in an easy to understand manner.

Each principle is summed up at the highest level in the subtitle with a more detailed description in the body. A list of related principles is included and in some instances visual aids. Footnotes are at the bottom of each section.

The hardcover is an attractive book with the blue spine being a glossy finish and the white part being matt. The paper is a medium weight with a nice feel and a matt finish.

The Kindle version faithfully follows the book but has the added benefit that e-books have such as search, contents viewable alongside page views, bookmarks, highlights, links, notes etc. which of course makes it much more effective as a reference.

I generally use the Kindle version more often on my laptop where the reader is in color and there is greater viewing space for graphics. When reading it on the Kindle Paperwhite the experience is still enjoyable but not to the same level.

Pros:
- Covers a wide range of design principles
- Information is presented in an effective way
- Text is concise and clearly written
- Related principles are presented for further study
- Graphics are informative and directly demonstrate the principle
- Hardcover is attractive and has a nice feel to it

Cons:
- For the hardcover there could be a quicker way to look up principles. The contents do a good job however something like tabs might help for quicker reference without having to return to the contents page
- For the Kindle version, the graphics and illustrations often fall well below the text and so lose some of the effectiveness they have in the hardcover edition where they are easily viewed alongside the text.

A Must-Have for Any Designer
By J. Taylor
I'm a college student majoring in interactive media and I bought this book for independent study. My degree courses often deal with specific aspects or applications of design, but I wanted to gain a better understanding of general design principles. I am happy to report that this book is rich with design information that can be utilized by all species of designers!

Each topic is given two pages - one page is more text-heavy and the other has visuals that demonstrate or exemplify the design principle at hand. Despite the seemingly brief dedication to each principle, the book is dense, efficient, and favors minimalism so although you may be able to scan over a principle in seconds, you need to take the time and study the information being presented in order to soak all of it in. Lidwell does a fantastic job at providing a survey of some of the most pertinent design principles. I foresee referencing this book throughout the rest of university studies and beyond.

A little wordy
By Tanner
This was my book for an intro botany class. It goes into a lot of detail at a higher level than I was prepared for in an intro class. Not always a bad thing I guess.

This book is broken up into two sections brooding chicks ...
By John Bailey
This book is broken up into two sections brooding chicks comes first and incubating/hatching second.
The author feels that you should be able to raise the chicks to layers before you worry about hatching eggs.
I felt that the information on brooding was complete and through, advanced beginners or higher levels of poultry enthusiasts might find this section redundant.
However, I would say that if you can't raise chickens you can't hatch any eggs. It's worth the money, in my opinion.

Terrific Resource for the Chicken Hearted
By Natural Health Doc
I don't think there's a more reliable source for chicken info than Gail Damerow, and this book does not disappoint. It came yesterday and I sat down with it after dinner. Before I knew it I'd read half the book! Her writing really is entertaining and her tips most welcome. I'm no longer a newbie with backyard poultry but I still got lots of management ideas I'd never thought of or read about elsewhere.

Lots of important information!
By Kfs
We were in the middle of an incubator situation so we bought the Kindle version of this book to have instantly. I will be ordering the paper version to include in my little Ag library! It is perfect for a newbie to DIY backyard farming flocks and its availability to the Kindle was a real lifesaver....11 little lives to be exact!
