Too Dry and Nowhere Near Enough Detail

On this obscure subject it would not take much to please me --- this campaign is oft overlooked but full of interesting figures on the fringes of Empire and combines the Arab Nationalist Movement with Lawrence et al., with the grit of the British Army under Allaby.
The narrative is not so much dry, but is on such a scale that it fulfills no reasonable accomplishment of scholarly or pop history: there is little of the political machinations at the macro level and few personal accounts that lend a "face" to the fighting. Unit action is described at Divisional and Brigade Level, which is the worst level for military narratives -- that is the stuff of official Divisional histories --- but not the stuff that makes a good read. Narratives need to come alive and this one falls flat on its face. There are few military books that I do not finish. This one I had to give up after about 2/3 s of the way through.
A real shame because I think that this could have have been a real stirling effort. Even the divisional actions are really berift of enough maps with details (Some actions are decribed in the dialogue in villages that are not on the map). This is a problem with other military histories in general, but it is pathological in this book. Arabs are faceless and Lawrence seems more like a bureaucrat than a fighter.
I am sorry Mr. Bruce, you need to do better next time, especially with something as important as this campaign.

A good start

The Campaign in the desert from 1914-1918 is one of the most itneresting sagas of World War One. From the Ottoman assualt on Suez to the allied turning to take Beersheba, Allenby's march on jerusalem and Lawrences arab rebellion this was a war of intrigue and brass. A wonderful conflict embodied in not a few films and one worth reading about. Certainly this was an exotic war with Desert Arabs serving alongside British officers against Ottoman Turks and their British advisors, amongst the background of the old biblical trade routes.

THis is a good start, a slightly dry but easy read on the subject which is sure to wet the taste of anyone, from those interested in the middle east to those fascinated with World War one or simply history Buffs.

A rather dry diet.....

Whilst I am in no position of course to challenge any of the facts presented by the Author, I do feel that they deserved more of what I would call "colour", - or perhaps salt and pepper..... The constant presentation of technical detail, (Army, Division and Brigade movements), without tactical and battle maps, with references mainly to their commanders but not that much more, turned the writing into somewhat of a dry recital, - not sufficient for this reader. The Tommy Atkins tit-bits carefully introduced were pleasant enough but one felt they were being unecessarily rationed out. Again, whilst giving the Arab Revolt what is probably its proper place in the overall campaign, (modest by far from what the regular reader would have expected to read), leaves a taste of something missing, - again, a certain driness throughout. One other thing, - and ignoring the political ramifications, - references to modern-day name usages would have helped...... But against all this, one learnt a great deal in detail of a Campaign rather forgotten, and all credit to the Author for chosing his subject.

Myrna B. Shure, Ph.D., is professor of psychology at Drexel University (formerly MCP Hahnemann University) in Philadelphia. Her I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) programs and her pioneering research with George Spivack have won three national awards, including the Lela Rowland Prevention Award from the National Mental Health Association. Dr. Shure is author of six books and numerous book chapters and journal articles. terrific behavioral learning tool

When my son began kindergarten this year, he immediately began acting out through hitting, pushing, and general misbehavior of all sorts. One of his problems has been lack of impulse control.

In response, we have been making our way through the "Raising a Thinking Child Workbook" together, and it is making a big difference for both of us. As a parent, I have learned to re-frame and re-phrase expectations in a more understandable way. The best growth has been in my son, though. He is now able to confront emotions and behaviors in a more thoughtful and clear way, and he has learned to curb his reactions and respond to situations in a calmer way.

Many different situations are presented throughout the book, setting up discussions of whether the situation is a "good idea" or a "bad idea" or whether things can happen before, after, or at the same time...and so forth. This leads into discussion of how both people in the situation might feel as well as possible solutions to ease the situation.

Some of the specific difficult situations that are presented include: child wanting parent's attention while parent is on the phone or cooking dinner, child throwing toys on the floor, teasing, fighting over TV/toys/video games, messy room. There are also many positive situations to discuss: child going to bed on time, helping to set the table, sharing, helping a hurt friend, etc.

This book is helpful both for child-child relationships and child-parent relationships. It has proven to be helpful for improving behavior both at home and at school.

Don Killgallon is the originator of the sentence-composing approach and author of numerous sentence-composing worktexts. A very good book

Regarding the sentence that two reviewers have complained about:

"A huge difference is the ways those authors build their sentences."

This is a perfectly fine sentence. Everything after 'is' can be substituted for by a demonstrative pronoun:

"A huge difference is this."

Furthermore:

"the ways those authors build their sentences."

functions as a subject complement, specifically a noun phrase, itself composed of a noun phrase (the ways), and a relative clause ([that]those authors build their sentences)...i.e. 'the ways [that] those authors build their sentences.' Within the relative clause the subject (authors) agrees with its verb (build).

So the sentence is fine grammatically, though slightly complicated.

Anyway, back to the book. If your main interest is in writing, then buy this book and do the exercises. It teaches you to think in terms of phrases and clauses, and it shows you how to connect them to create interesting and sophisticated sentences, using models from well-known authors. If you are interested in grammar particularly, then supplement this book with a traditional grammar book that focuses on theory. I recommend Understanding English Grammar, by Martha Kolln and Robert Funk, any edition.

The sentence-composing approach is practical and down-to-earth. This book should be seriously considered by high school teachers looking for a more engaging approach to teaching the (sometimes dry) subject of grammar.

About the Author

Brian MacWhinney is Professor of Psychology, Computational Linguistics, and Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University. He has developed a model of first and second language acquisition, processing, and disorders called the Competition Model, which describes how language learning emerges from forces operating on lexically-based patterns across divergent timeframes. It has been tested through cross-linguistic experimentation, neuroimaging, online language learning, and analysis of the CHILDES and TalkBank corpora. His recent publications include The CHILDES Project: Tools for Analyzing Talk (3rd ed; Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2000) and, co-edited with Roberta Klatzky and Marlene Behrmann, Embodiment, Ego-Space, and Action (Psychology Press 2008).

Andrej Malchukov is a Senior Researcher at the St. Petersburg Institute for Linguistic Research (Russian Academy of Sciences) and is currently affiliated to the University of Mainz as a Visiting Professor. In addition to descriptive work on Siberian languages, his main research interests lie in the domain of language typology. His publications include the edited volumes The Oxford Handbook of Case (with Andrew Spencer; OUP 2009), Studies in Ditransitive Constructions: A Comparative Handbook (with Bernard Comrie and Martin Haspelmath; Mouton de Gruyter 2010) and Impersonal Constructions: A Cross-Linguistic Perspective (with Anna Siewierska; John Benjamins 2011).

Edith Moravscik is Professor Emerita of Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she has taught for over 30 years. Her publications include the textbooks An Introduction to Syntax and An Introduction to Syntactic Theory (both Continuum 2006), and Introducing Language Typology (CUP 2013) and the edited volumes Functionalism and Formalism in Linguistics (with Michael Darnell, Frederick Newmeyer, Michael Noonan, and Kathleen Wheatley; John Benjamins 1999) and Formulaic Language (with Roberta Corrigan, Hamid Ouali, and Kathleen Wheatley). I've been sharing this around

Although others might get a different message from the book, I enjoy its pro-planning, anti-bad design viewpoint. I really liked sharing the concepts in this book with others in my community who actively promote change (not that I do, but that I react to their promotion).
Much of the book is, of course, geared to providing the tools for new development, but the understanding of what makes existing neighborhoods work is invaluable.

Great picture book on New Urbanism

This is basically a coffee-table book that highlights 12 neighborhoods in the US and Canada, and describes how these neighborhoods are well-designed and encourage energy-efficiency, walking, and discourage driving. It is filled with lots of maps and pictures of these neighborhoods and other places; at times the book seems like "urban design porn" (in a good way!).

I wish the book had spent some time discussing one large barrier to families moving in to high-density urban housing: children. Families with children seem to have a higher demand for open space (i.e. a big yard), and of course they have a high demand for high-quality schools. I am just guessing but I am pretty sure that families with school-age children are under-represented in all 12 of the neighborhoods featured in the book, and that many young couples living in those neighborhoods will move out once they have children approaching school age. I would have liked some discussion of what can be done to counter this trend (or maybe it doesn't need to be countered - maybe families with small children should be living in the suburbs, and everyone else should be living in the city!).

Lastly, although the book was very enjoyable to read and look at, I found it ironic that a book about design was so poorly designed for actual reading - it is big and paperback and difficult to hold while reading.

Derivational grammar of the various Germanic languages

This book is thorough in its coverage of the derivational laws that turned Indo-European words into the Indo-European vocabulary of the Germanic languages. To find interest here, you will not only have to have a fairly solid background in Indo-European linguistics; you will also need to be familiar with the abstract shorthand used by historical linguists, as it is omnipresent in this book.
As a treatment of these topics, it is thorough and comprehensive. It is silent, though, on the question of whether there is a substantial non-Indo-European element in the Germanic languages, and the relationship of any "substrate," if it in fact exists, to the sound changes it records. There is also minimal attempt made here to analyse relationships between the various Germanic languages, even though the book records similar sound changes appearing independently among the different languages of the family. Some nod to the existence of these subjects for debate would have made this a better book.

A unique reference work unlike others out there

No other academic volume covers the different eras of Germanic grammar more completely nor more succinctly than Professor Voyles'. He comprehensively treats nominal/adjectival declension, pronominal declension, and verb conjugation and addresses some long-standing controversies. He does not believe for instance, that there were two long-e vowels in Germanic (e1 and e2); rather, he demonstrates how they are both derivative of the same long-e in Indo-European and how they were pronounced identically in Germanic times. Any historical linguist would do well to start with this singular volume.

Why map of Germany?

I did not read this book, but I am quite into historical linguistics, to say the least; and I feel rather appalled at the cover of the book. It is a map of Germany! Why should that be so? It is confusing enough that the word "Germanic" has "German" in it... But the German language itself strayed early on from Germanic when it underwent the Old High German consonant shift. German is not especially or in any way quintessentially Germanic! Otto Jespersen suggested using "Gothonic;" but, in contrast, with the word "Germanic" appearing here within a map of Germany, the nail has been hammered into the confusion-wound that the word "Germanic" is.

Take the map away!!! Replace it with Denmark if you need to show just one country, hehe...

In any case, based on the reviews and subject matter, I bet this book is AWESOME! That is why I give it 5 stars even without having read it. It reeks AWESOMEness. Just remove the map of Germany, ok?
