This terrifying memoir recounts author Daphne Scholinski's three years spent in mental institutions for, among other things, Gender Identity Disorder. Daphne came from a busted home: Mom left to go to college and become a feminist and an artist; Dad stayed home with two daughters, the elder of whom, Daphne, he often beat. When Daphne started acting up at school, her shrinks decided to put her away. Her family, not knowing how to handle her, agreed. Because she was a tomboy who wore jeans and T-shirts and didn't act enough like a girl, her treatment, in addition to talk therapy, isolation, and drugs, required her to wear makeup, walk with a swing in her hips, and pretend to be obsessed with boys. This sounds awful enough, but when you realize that the confinement and treatment took place from 1981 to 1984, it's absolutely chilling. This book is both a powerful indictment of Gender Identity Disorder treatment and an inspiring testament of one person's survival.

About the Author
Daphne Scholinski is an artist who lives in San Francisco. She is also an activist who speaks at colleges and universities about psychiatric abuse of gay and lesbian teenagers. She was a speaker at the NGO Conference on Women in Beijing, and her story has appeared on ABC-TV?S 20/20.

love, fear and so much more

Recently optioned for a feature film, this fascinating memoir is much more than the story of a journey through the mental health system but deals with the confusing time of adolescence, parental challenges, love, fear and so much more. Very timely; let's hope that today's world is growing more understanding. Only time will tell.

Sometime in the Eighties

"Mr. Bowen. Is it true that they used to put gay people in mental institutions?"
"We," I quietly correct her.
"What?"
"It's our society. So, it's we." She thinks on that for a moment, then gets back to her question.
"Well, is it really true?"
"I'm pretty sure. At least, I've heard that before."
"When did they stop?" We google a couple of phrases and stumble on Scholinski's poignant memoir.
"The eighties," I finally say. It looks like we stopped sometime in the eighties.
"Oh...so it was a while ago," she says, seeming satisfied with my answer.
Sometime in the eighties. For a thirteen-year-old, that was a while ago. It gives her some cushion. Puts some distance between her generation and a great travesty of justice. And ethics. And decency. But for a forty-year-old man, it's not the case. The eighties are still pretty vivid. As an NYU grad from the late eighties, all I can think about are some of my young, gay friends that came to the village as more than just students. Refugees, really. Terribly misunderstood refugees looking for some asylum.
Scholinski's memoir is an excellent look at such pathetic attempts at therapy such as having the author gain points and privileges for wearing make-up and dresses. Daphne's writing style is easy and conversational and makes a tough subject a very easy read. It was never a book I intended to read, but I'm grateful for having stumbled onto it. Simply put, "The Last Time I Wore A Dress," is a satisfying memoir.

The content is very specific to my design for the course. The book addresses a wide range of prior content affiliation by the student. It reads very well but still provides necessary mathematical rigor for understading the concepts presented...extremely appropriate for most EdD programs and could also function as an excellent transistion from a mathematics, statistical background into the world of research in the social sciences. About the Author
David Tanner is a Professor in the Department of Educational Research and Administration at California State University, Fresno, where he was the Department Chair from 1990-1995. He received his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction/Measurement from Texas A&M University, and his areas of interest include educational psychology; statistics and measurement; educational research; quantitative and qualitative evaluation; assessing student achievement; evaluating classroom assessment instruments; and evaluating the performance of teachers and teacher candidates. He has authored several journal articles and the textbook Assessing Academic Achievement (�2001).

Tanner's Using Statistics textbook review

Found this text to be fairly accessible for someone new to the language and concepts of statistics, though certain chapters can be a bit dense. Each chapter built on the previous material covered, making for a logical progression. A few misleading typos aside, the examples were pertinant to the edcuational field and tables and review questions were helpful. More modeled problems with detailed explanations and review of concepts would have helped to solidify the material covered.

I have been familiar with John Templeton for a while now because of Templeton Mutual Funds. . . little did I know that Mr. Templeton was such a great writer on spiritual matters!
If you have ANY belief in God, and even if you don't, I would definitely recommend that you read this book. You'll learn that science and religion can co-exist quite beautifully and that science and the application of the scientific method just may be the key to experiencing a paradigm shift in theologic matters.
The book will also show you that keeping an open mind towards God and religion is an important aspect on your spiritual journey. Why ridicule and "fight against" other religions when you can embrace them and build upon your own beliefs with some of their beliefs that you weren't originally familiar with? Why deny God when our limited thought processes can't even begin to comprehend the concept and actuality of God?
Read this book. . . if not for the scientific and theological value, for the great pleasure of reading a truly inspiring book!

A great book by a very good man

If you want a worms eye view of the grim reality of the WWII Italian campaign then here you go. Bill Mauldin is one of my all time favorite Writers and more importantly Cartoonist. This gritty, humorous book about one of Americas toughest campaigns is one of the best books I have ever read. His story about Patton is worth the price of the book alone. But there is so much more and I don't want to give it away. I can not recommend this book too highly !

The real war

Witty, grim, ironic - Bill Mauldin's "The Brass Ring" is a look at the reality of World War II by a guy who was there. If the men and women in the war were "just doing their job", as many say, then why do so many of us respect them so much? Mauldin's own story does as good a job, I suppose, as any man can do in trying to answer this unanswerable question.

This book can serve a multitude of uses to a multitude of readers: A "sort of" history of WWII; the story of how a young man from humble and poor beginings won a pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning, how an aspiring cartoonist gained national recognition and how other aspiring cartoonists may go about becoming recognized themselves. Highly entertaining with one of the most humorous and climactic endings I have ever had the pleasure to read.
