About the Author

Using her background in landscape architecture and ecological restoration, HEATHER VENHAUS works with teams of scientists, designers, and educators to develop sustainable and regenerative design solutions. Ms. Venhaus facilitated and led the development of The Sustainable Sites Initiative: Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks 2009, the nation's first rating system for landscapes, and has held multiple leadership positions in the U.S. Green Building Council and the American Society of Landscape Architects. Heather is the founding principal of Regenerative Environmental Design and lives in Austin, Texas.

Great resource if you want to minimize the impact of building or developing a property

Heather Venhaus has done a remarkable job of explaining sustainability for small-scale sites in a manner which is practical and relevant. The book is clear, thorough and beautifully illustrated. It contains scores of references for further exploration. If you own, build, design, maintain, finance, regulate or legislate housing, this book is an eye-opener. If you want your next landscaping or gardening project to be earth-friendly, this book is a great tool. Even if you do not plan to pursue a Sustainable Sites certification, I still recommend this book. It is full of practical approaches and the science behind them. You will also find tips that will actually save you money over the "because that's the way we've always done it" construction methods.

This book, as well as the Sustainable Sites initiative in general, provides a key ingredient in the building process which has largely been missing from Western construction methods -- holistic assessment and planning. As a veteran of real estate development for 35 years, I know that very few houses or communities are planned with the full lifecycle impact of the site in mind. The developer, builder and landscape contractor will be gone in a few months -- the house in 50-100 years. This book will help you create a house and landscape which will perform sustainably and comfortably throughout it's lifetime.

Practical Guide to Applying Sustainable Principles

What a great resource! This book gives practical and applicable principles through detailed case studies with proven results. As a landscape architect designing and developing projects for the last 15 years, sustainability is always the forefront going into every project, but budgets typically "value engineer" out these "ideas" early on. Now I have the "proof is in the pudding" to back up our ideas as well as integrate new ones with our projects and our clients!

Amazingly good!

It is difficult to adequately express how amazing this was. It's all the spoken parts of Hamlet as Shakespeare wrote them, spoken by characters in a comic book. It is set in the future, in space, where Denmark is it's own planet or something. This doesn't change the story, since characters are positioned the same to one another. Personalities and stories aren't time specific like clothes are.

It has pretty good art. The style shifts to different levels of detail based on what's appropriate for that scene. Transitions between scenes and how characters are introduced are done well. So, just as a comic book this flows well.

Shakepeare as a comic makes far more sense than does reading a play. Hamlet is a play. Hamlet was meant to be watched. A comic combines the language with a linear visual. This might even be better than a play; at least, for me it was much more gripping than Shakespeare as a play. In a play, the visual is there, but due to language barriers, I haven't gotten nuances and all from the language that I probably would have picked up on had I learned English in the 1600s. However, in comic book form I could reread lines, or read more slowly or quickly and I had the visual there on the page with the lines mixed into it. The book was really gripping. I got so much more out of this than any other exposure to Shakespeare. I'm all about getting more manga Shakespeare.

I highly recommend this as a way of accessing Hamlet. Libraries and school libraries should consider getting a copy, since this is required reading for classes often enough that it will get wear, and, as I've said, is a very good way of really understanding Shakespeare's nuances. Also, it's just a good read in general as a comic and reasonably priced.

Embarrassingly Bad

In theory, the idea of paring illustrations with Shakespeare's text makes sense: his words were, after all, meant to be watched rather than simply read; but this is not the way to do it. Artists like Hayao Miyazaki have demonstrated that Manga has the potential to be a more serious art form than many assume, but projects like this give pause: the juxtaposition of Shakespeare's rich and vibrant language with utterly flat and lifeless illustrations is unsettling, and makes one wonder if there might be inherent limitations to what can be done with the medium.

More accurate title: Mangled Shakespeare

The cover of this book is misleading---the size of the wording implies that the text is partly 'manga,' but mostly 'Hamlet.' Sadly, the reality is that the book is 3/4 manga, 1/4 Hamlet.

The problems start with the cutting-edge, futuristic, dystopia setting. I'm not saying that Shakespeare can't be transferred successfully to other settings (because it can and has been done very well), but when people are talking to each through floating, virtual screens on one page, but a guy with a shovel is digging up skulls on another page, it just doesn't sync.

Worse than the problems with setting, this text doesn't seem to have much appreciation or sensitivity to what Shakespeare was actually doing. Huge passages are removed. Important information is elided. Beautiful language is abandoned on the cutting room floor. I'm ranting now, of course, but it just seems that if you're going to do Shakespeare, you should trust him enough to make his material the top-priority. (For a great example of what's possible, check out the Classics Illustrated version of Hamlet with artwork by Tom Mandrake.)

Back to the rant for just a second, using an ellipsis (e.g., "...") in every seventh dialogue balloon is gratuitous and uncalled-for.

With that out of my system, let me say that as far as the artwork goes, the book is great. While the figures are distorted beyond plausibility (a person with proportions of 11-heads tall?! I know that's part of manga-style, but please...), other elements of sequential art are handled very well. The dialogue balloons caught my eye, I think because of the generous white space that helps emphasize the wording. But even more, the background textures and page layouts were wonderful. On several pages I thought, "Aahh, so that's what McCloud was talking about...."

So, taken all in all, this version of Hamlet leaves quite a bit to be desired, but it's a great step towards what sequential art CAN do with sophisticated texts.

Flamboyant composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), who was America's ambassador to the world of serious music for most of his jam-packed life, has long needed a sober, well-researched and encompassing biography, and this is it. There have been tactful hagiographies (John Gruen), malicious deconstructions (Joan Peyser) and ambivalent inside stories (Burton Bernstein); but Burton, a British TV producer who knew Bernstein well but was no acolyte, has created, with the aid of family archives, a wealth of interviews and an interested layperson's sound musical knowledge, a full-length study unlikely to be surpassed. It is in many ways a tragic story, not of genius unrecognized--if anything Bernstein was overpraised in his life, both as composer and conductor--but of a protean nature overcome by the demands of celebrity status and an overweening ego. From the start "Lenny" was a determinedly colorful character, insistent on the limelight, extravagant of gesture and emotion. Whether he could have become a great composer, rather than a highly talented musical entertainer whose best-remembered work remains his Broadway musicals, will never be known; for his whole professional life was an agonized tightrope walk between the frenzies of adulation that greeted his conducting and his guilty sense that he was betraying his creative gift by not spending more time in the workroom. And even the slim body of work he did create in his crowded life emerged more often than not from collaborations with lyricists and librettists, almost as if he was afraid to be alone with his muse. Bernstein was a man who owed much to his Jewish heritage (and Burton adroitly notes how much of his serious music had Jewish roots) and experienced a strong sense of guilt about his bisexuality, particularly after the death of his betrayed wife Felicia. But as the reader begins to wonder whether such anguish is inescapable for a non-heterosexual American artist, there is the example of Bernstein's friend Aaron Copland to ponder: a man secure in his gay sexuality who created what is arguably a much more lasting body of work and had a greater influence on the musical life of his time. The fact that a biography can raise such questions is a tribute to the tact and imagination that infuse this one. Bernstein owes Burton a posthumous hug for having told it straight, with affection but no blinkers. Photos.

A sensitive, well-balanced account of the great American maestro's life and works. Biographer Burton, for over 20 years Bernstein's television and video director, neatly avoids most of the pitfalls that wait for a close friend who attempts an authoritative portrait within a very few years of the death of its subject. While generally admiring Bernstein the creative dynamo, Burton rarely gushes, unlike at least one other recent memoirist. Nor does he trash Bernstein for his emotional and sexual excesses; indeed, Burton deals with the intimate side of Bernstein's life, particularly his homosexuality and his guilt at the rift it caused between him and his wife, Felicia, during her last troubled years, with nonjudgmental candor and a lack of sensationalism. The core of the book is a straightforward chronological narrative. Into a lifetime scarcely longer than seven decades, Bernstein seemingly packed several lifetimes of composition (both ``serious'' and Broadway), conducting, and teaching. Even in a book of this length, the sheer amount of mental and physical activity described is hardly less exhausting to read about than it must have been to experience. AN INSIGHTFUL BIOGRAPHY INTO A MAJOR AMERICAN MUSICAL FIGURE

Humphrey Burton has written a tremendous biography of Bernstein (1918-1990). It is filled with details and insights into the man, his conducting, and his own compositions. Bernstein was renowned as a composer, as a performer on the piano, as a conductor, and as an educator, and Burton highlights all of these aspects. Bernstein was also gay, or bisexual; Burton indicates early on, "The reference to Bernstein's sexual problems underscored the confusion he felt about his sexuality, a confusion which he would continue to confront in his final year at Harvard." (He married in 1951, and had three children, to whom he was devoted.)

When he met Aaron Copland for the first time (at one of the "salons of the New York intellectual elite"), Bernstein told him he was a great fan, and announced that he could play Copland's Piano Variations from memory; Copland challenged him to do so, and he did. Bernstein later recalled, "So I played it, and they were all---he particularly---drop-jawed." Thus began a lifelong friendship between the two, that Burton chronicles in numerous places in the book.

After the 1944 premiere of On the Town, he accepted the advice of famed conductor Serge Koussevitsky and devoted himself to conducting. "Composing became a holiday diversion, fitted in between conducting tours and preseason parties. His activities as a pianist were restricted to playing the same handful of concertos with every new orchestra he conducted." In a speech Bernstein made in 1963, he said, "The composer comes first. In the beginning was the Note, and the Note was with God; and whoever can reach high for that note, reach high, and bring it back to us on earth, to our earthly ears�he is a composer and to the extent of his reach partakes of the divine."

When his culminating work Mass (1971) was being produced, Bernstein said that "I feel young again, twenty-five years old, as I was when I was doing On the Town." The 1972 production of Carmen, which won a Grammy in 1973, yet so exhausted Bernstein that "apart from his own work, and a revival of Fidelio in Vienna, he never again conducted an opera in an opera house." Burton also clarifies the misreporting of Bernstein's exchange with a Black Panther leader in 1970 (the reporting made it seem as if Bernstein was engaging in "radical chic," erroneously reporting him as having said, "I dig absolutely").

One of Bernstein's major innovations was his work on television. From 1958-1972, Bernstein hosted and conducted "Young People's Concerts." As Burton notes, "They have never been rivaled in popular television education." Burton also opines that Bernstein's 1973 Norton Lectures at Harvard "have proved to be among the most valuable and stimulating contributions ever made to musical education."

All in all, this is a detailed and very perceptive portrait of one of the most influential American musical figures of the 20th century. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

It was great!

It took me about 2 months to finish reading it, not because it wasn't a page-turner, but because it was a long book and also I'd been busy. It was actually a great page-turner. I could read on and on for 5-7 hours without a break.
Bernstein's personal letters to his friends and colleagues, including Aaron Copland, his thesis at Harvard, etc. were all very inspiring to read. There were quite a bit of poems he wrote also. The positive and negative sides of the great man were also well delivered without getting vulgar.
I really appreciated the author's knowledge about music and the classical music world and system.
The book makes you feel like you're living the life closely with the great man and gets you intellectually, musically, emotionally involved. You experience with him every success and failure Bernstein went through.
His talents were beyond human in some way, yet he was a man just like you and me. Sometimes his talents were greater than he as a man, and as a result the world occasionally saw him fall apart. The book is honest about his failures and misbehaviours without being accusatory. It makes you want to forgive the man for the wrongs he'd done. The burden he was carrying as genius was more than an ordinary man could bear.

The book also covers the Jewish culture, politics, world events, how Bernstein and his genius contributed to the world and American history, etc. in relations to his achievements.
There are enough interviews with his friends and family, reviews on Bernstein's works, letters etc. but the author uses his own narratives to tell us about the man, which is, I think, why this book is more solid and readable. Only, I wish there were more photographs. But oh well, you can't ask for everything.
Great, inspiring book. I might read it again.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a very *unique* book in terms of contents and approach. Unlike most other books in the area of wireless communications, its approach is rather from electromagnetic theories (or physics), which is particularly interesting. Also, noise is explained in detail based on antenna temperature. Chapters 6 and 7 are also interesting. For example, the concept of LOS horizon should be useful in the research for long-range communications. Finally, as in this book, it is always good to have examples at the end of each chapter. ... this book might be possibly considered as supplemental material for teaching certain courses ... . About the Author

Victor L. Granatstein was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He received�his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Columbia University, New York, in 1963. After a year of postdoctoral work at Columbia, he became a research scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1964 to 1972 where he studied microwave scattering from turbulent plasma. In 1972, he joined the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) as a research physicist, and from 1978 to 1983, he served as head of NRL’s High Power Electromagnetic Radiation Branch.

In August 1983, he became a professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Maryland, College Park. From 1988 to 1998, he was director of the Institute for Plasma Research at the University of Maryland. Since 2008, he has been Director of Research of the Center for Applied Electromagnetics at the University of Maryland. His research has involved invention and development of high-power microwave sources for heating plasmas in controlled thermonuclear fusion experiments, for driving electron accelerators used in high-energy physics research, and for radar systems with advanced capabilities. He also has led studies on�the effects of high-power microwaves on integrated electronics. His most recent study is of air breakdown in the presence of both terahertz radiation and gamma rays with possible application to detecting concealed radioactive material. He has coauthored more than 250 research papers in scientific journals and has co-edited three books. He holds a number of patents on active and passive microwave devices.

Granatstein is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He has received a number of major research awards including the E.O. Hulbert Annual Science Award (1979), the Superior Civilian Service Award (1980), the Captain Robert Dexter Conrad Award for scientific achievement (awarded by the Secretary of the Navy, 1981), the IEEE Plasma Science and Applications Award (1991), and the Robert L. Woods Award for Excellence in Electronics Technology (1998). He has spent part of his sabbaticals in 1994, 2003, and 2010 at Tel Aviv University where he holds the position of Sackler Professor by Special Appointment.

What is there to like in "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications"? A lot!

The preface paints the landscape: "Wireless communications is based on the launching, propagation, and detection of electromagnetic waves usually at radio or microwave frequencies." By the end of the book, you'll have covered short-range, medium range and long-range forms of wireless communication. You'll start with the physical principles, gain insight into the supporting theory and equations, and learn examples of how this works in real world applications.

The author begins with a brief but fascinating tour of the history with "An Introduction to Modern Wireless Communications." The chapter is beautifully written and nicely laid out with photos and graphics. The author includes stories of some of the great early physicists and their experiments that led to modern day technology. The breakthroughs of people like Marconi are brought to life in a very memorable way. (Marconi's entrepreneurial inventions enabled shore to ship communications and led to the unanticipated discovery of the ionosphere.) Fascinating background ....

Next, Dr. Granatstein winds his way through a noisy century of scientific and engineering discoveries in radio. You quickly catch up with today's wireless technologies in cell phones, local area networks and satellite communication systems all have grown out of these fundamental principles.

Chapters 3 and 4 present mutually-reinforcing chapters on "Antennas" and "Antenna Arrays". I always wondered how antennas worked - this explains it well. Chapter 5, "Radio Frequency (RF) Wave Propagation" helps you think about propagation challenges - "reflection, refraction, absorption, multipath phase interference and diffraction." These are real world problems for deployments.

By the time you reach chapter 7, you'll start to realize the level of math required to master this subject - this chapter is packed with all sorts of equations.

This book explains the basics of how signals are created, transmitted, and received. But it rapidly accelerates into more advanced territory. The equations of electromagnetic radiation will challenge even the most determined. On the other hand, the figures and graphics are crystal clear and easily accessible to even the most casual reader.

In addition to being full of theory, this book is well populated with practical descriptions of how theory plays out in practice. Simple diagrams convey common material. Figures in chapter 5 depict the basic geometries of waves propagation. Graphics in chapter 6 nicely and simply describe the operation of wireless microwave bridges.

The author is a true expert on his subject. He has a Ph.D in electrical engineering and held positions at Bell Labs, the Naval Research Lab, and conducted decades of research and teaching in a university setting. He has studied, researched, practiced, taught, and now written about the subject. This is as authoritative as an author can be.

The text itself emerged from teaching material to senior EE students, grad students, and engineers working in communication companies. In less than 250 pages of text, the author conveys an important body of knowledge that has been collected over roughly the past 150 years. This book could easily be used in a classroom setting, as a main text or supplemental reading.

So many wireless gadgets are in use today that they are shaping our culture as well as our future technology pathways. "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications" provides a strong foundation for understanding the drivers and implications. It ranks as the best book I've seen (by far) on the physics of wireless communications.

beggars can't be choosers

This book saved my GPA. Here's the thing: I HATE Milton. I can't get through 20 lines without wanting to chuck the book out the window, let alone all 12 books of Paradise Lost. But I'm getting an MA in English and I had to take the class, so this book saved my grade and maybe even more than that, considering Milton makes me want to walk into oncoming traffic.

The "translation" is absolutely awful from an aesthetic, literary perspective, though. There were some passages that made me laugh out loud, and believe me, Paradise Lost is not meant to be a comedy. True, the translation is meant to be read side by side with the original text, but I did not have time for that--I just needed to get the gist and move on with my life. Still, I was able to write a 25 page paper on Paradise Lost having only read this translation. I simply highlighted passages that were relevant to my argument, and then consulted the original text by matching up the line numbers so I could quote. Piece of cake.

What a great book, very lamen, but still great, a great way for you to grasp the concept of the original "Lost Paradise". The original to me is the the King James Version where this book was very New Living Translation. Makes me want to go back and read the original now that have a grasp on the book.

Criminal Investigation, Fifth Edition, is designed to develop an analytical understanding of the investigative process. In doing so, this new edition focuses on merging theoretical and proven practical aspects of crime detection and solution. Comprehensive, but dense

The book has a lot of information. I have rated it four stars not on content, but on the density of the book. Each chapter contains enough information to be further broken up into more chapters. I have had similar text books that had the same information at 150% of the size, but being much more readable. If you have the time to sift through a concentrated amount of information in every chapter, then this book is a five star book. If you can't then it would be a three star. I love it, but recognizing the density, I have to award it four-stars.

I found this text excellent for use with first or second year criminal justice students. The review questions at the end of each chapter is a good tool. The text is not too technical as to overwhelm the reader. It is an easy text in which to us as an instructor. I would recommend this book.

This has been a very interesting book. My professor required it for out class, but I have never loved reading a textbook so much before, I would definitely suggest this book for any person wanting to get a better idea of investigating and how it works. A book for more than just students.

Wealth of Information

I'm still in the middle of this book. Some of it is a little silly, and I gleam over those parts in a rush. They are relatively few and far in between, and the wealth of useful knowledge and insight throughout the rest of the book is worth it. I am beginning to apply many of the principles for the first time... its not a magic formula, but it has initiated noticeable progress where before I was stagnating for some time. Its small and easy to carry around to read when you only have one or two minutes available.

The only strange thing about this edition is that authorship is credited to Napoleon Hill, but much of the book speaks of Hill in third person, as if the revising author (who I think is W. Clement Stone) takes liberty to speak on behalf of the original author.

Three's Company, but can also be very lonely

I didn't think I'd care for hearing about the m/m/m relationship between Roman (Dragon), Clatcher (Dragon), and Kendrick (former Dragon now Fox shifter). But leave it to Marcy Jacks to not only make me eat my vegetables, but to like 'em too! The only thing that was "negative" was all the sex. I like a little more story with my sex. With three men there seemed to be endless combinations: Clatcher & Roman; Kendrick & Roman; Clatcher & Kendrick; Roman & Clatcher & Kendrick this has led to well over a third of the book being devoted to their sexual escapades. This was definitely an erotic romance.

I used to not like Clatcher. He was a third wheel as far as I'm concerned. But he seemed so sad and lost, as if he was only a part of the threesome because the other two felt sorry for him. He felt alone not only in the castle full of dragons (and wolves), but also in his relationship with two other men. I wasn't quite sure what direction the story was going to take, until the notorious Ailiwel returns (with a vengeance).

The author still manages to bring new interesting ideas to the tenth book in this series. She manages to surprise the reader, toss in some fierce fighting, revenge seeking and violence. Hot water and grease do a lot more than just make the floor slippery. Kendrick in the kitchen with a yelling chef. Trying to overcome fears instead of repeatedly reliving them. Living in fear. Trying hard to make the threesome work. Spending time with each mate separately and all three together to cement their bond. Bringing awareness to threats and attacks on dragons.
Please let there be more books in this series.

I either really have a thing for M/M/M or I just adore Kendrick, Roman, and Clatcher. I suspect it's a combination of both of those things *grins* This was a great addition to their story since it's human nature to have doubts about a two-person relationship, much less one involving three. I liked the way the author handled it. More importantly, I got to see Roman squish Aileen's head like a grape! YAY!!!

Now I'll be looking forward to more......

Not sure why the stories involving Roman, Kendrik and Clatcher aren't among my favorites. I do enjoy reading them but they just don't strike me the way the others in the story do. I will say this one was better than the last story. It had more excitement and action in it.
