The missing link

As a CTO of a company that develops machine learning software(Analytics 1305), I always find it challenging to convince business people about the value of machine learning. Even the scientists in Business intelligence, mainly statisticians, find it hard to understand what machine learning can do. This is because in order to make a connection of their background to machine learning they need to put a lot of effort to read one of the bulky machine learning books. This is not easy since scientists in business intelligence are super busy and they don't have the time to read machine learning theory and translate it to their language.

This book bridges the gap. It speaks the language of machine learning with the "accent" of business intelligence/(industrial and systems engineering). It has helped us tremendously to educate and market our clients about the value of machine learning. It has also helped us (machine learning people) to understand better the business intelligence area. There are a lot of books that talk about analytics/data mining in a very high level. This one talks about the stuff that actually work and have made netflix, amazon, google and yahoo successful companies. I highly recommend this book.

I would also like to note that the editor has done a very good job in the typesetting.

I do not have time to make my own book for class, and I don't have to because this book gives my students all the affixes they need to know. This book is very important to my middle school curriculum, and in the end-of-the-year survey, students mentioned this book and the one on roots as being the best reference book in the classroom.

This book is the best book ever !!! All the topics that I've been looking fo rin telemetry has its own chapter...you could easily understand it especially the AV Dissociation. I even tell my friends that I ordered it in amazon ...thanks amazon!

Ages 5-7. Not just abridged but retold, this colorfully illustrated, large-format book has a text that's longer than most picture books but considerably shorter than Burnett's beloved novel. McClintock's sensitive illustrations, apparently ink drawings with watercolor washes, will certainly appeal to readers and book buyers of all ages. The period settings and costumes have a charm all their own, and the detailed pictures clearly portray Sara's transformation from privileged child to pauper and back again. Some scenes and dialogue here did not appear in the original book, but they serve to move the plot along more swiftly. The story loses a great deal of subtlety in theme and character development (as well as plot and setting) in its adaptation to picture-book format. Those who love the original will advise children to wait until they're old enough to read it. But children or parents who want a picture-book version will find this a very pretty one. Carolyn Phelan

One of the greatest children's stories of all time.

This book was a favorite of mine in my childhood, and, when I returned as an adult to re-read it to my own daughter, I discovered it all over again.
This is a story about a different kind of princess than one might imagine; a princess that is an orphan - lonely, cold, hungry and abused. Sara Crewe begins life as the beloved, pampered daughter of a rich man. When he dies a pauper, she is thrown on the non-existent mercy of her small-minded, mercenary boarding school mistress. Stripped of all her belongings but for one set of clothes and a doll, Sara becomes a servant of the household. Hated by the schoolmistress for her independent spirit, Sara becomes a pariah in the household, with only a few secretly loyal friends. But through her inner integrity and strength of will, Sara Crewe maintains the deportment, inner nobility and generous spirit of a "real" princess.
It is a fabulous story of the triumph of human will, and good over evil.
This story is a real classic, and needs no re-writing to be as enjoyable and readable today as it ever was. Ask my 8-year-old daughter, who has already re-read it twice. Accept no substitutes, re-writes, abridgements or copies! This is a work of art, and should not be tampered with.

One of my childhood favorites

This book has familiar fairy tale figures, such as a wicked stepmother-like Miss Minchin, a fairy godfather, and an orphan protagonist who is a princess in disguise. It's the story of a little girl who endures some setbacks but reaches a happy ending not only for herself, but for those around her whom she helps even when she's pretty downtrodden.
The writing is charming and Sara comes through as a person who is determined to maintain her values, through good times and bad. She has a definite personality and that is a good role model for any child. She stays true to her beliefs in being kind, mannerly, charitable and above all, herself.
The magic in this book is unsurpassed in children's literature. When Sara comes home, wet and cold and neglected, to find that a magician has transformed her world, you can't help but be enchanted. I will admit to reading it again now and then as an adult. The charm is still there.
Just a fun factoid; A Little Princess was originally a shorter story titled Sara Crewe, in a volume of children's novelettes by Burnett.

Very abridged

As noted in the product description, this is a shortened version of the classic story, written for new readers. There is nothing wrong with it, except that a lot of the magic of the original is in the details, which are rather left out here. A somewhat regretted purchase, because the classic version proved to be almost as easy to read, for a child who loves the discovery of reading, and much more interesting. Larger print is nice. There are no pictures in the paperback copy.

Much more than a book of recipes

Wow! I rarely buy cookbooks now because there is so much available on the internet, but this book is worth the purchase. I just received mine yesterday and stayed up late reading it. There are 2 things that make this book stand out. First, the America's Test Kitchen chefs do the best job of testing recipes, methods, ingredients, etc... so you know they'll be good. Second, this is much more than a book of recipes. There are useful tips, explanations for why they chose a certain item (e.g. dried beans vs canned, brand recommendations), and excellent charts that compare different types of legumes or fish or beans. I'm a graduate of the CIA and this book is certainly as good as our textbooks. I plan to look at more ATK books.

Instant favorite!

I have a few wonderful Mediterranean cookbooks, and it's my go to region for culinary experiments. As much as I love those books, I really wish I had saved my money and purchased this one first. The sheer mass of information in this book is astonishing. With recipes from all over the region, including North Africa, Greece, Spain and Italy, you will never get bored with it.

The book is divided up into the usual sections like soups, poultry, salads, etc. but with some additions like rice and grains, breads, flatbreads, pizzas, etc. The table of contents in each section lists special indicators (little colored squares) after dishes which are either fast (45 minutes or less) or vegetarian. Within each section, the recipes are varied. Each recipe starts with an explanation of why the dish is made the way it is, such as why the potatoes are boiled instead of microwaved, why this dish is blended by hand instead of a food processor, etc. This will save you tons of time when you are thinking of taking a shortcut and find that it doesn't turn out right. Then the recipe shows photos of steps that might be unfamiliar. And then there are little "notes" inserted every few pages which go into a specific ingredient, what to look for, how it's used...things like sardines, pancetta, bay leaves...or else methods, like how to properly wash and dry a salad, or how to salt-soak beans. Many of the recipes also list further variations, such as pan roasted cauliflower...which then shows how to add capers and pine nuts, or spices and pistachios. My only minor complaint is that the nutritional info for each recipe is listed...but it's all listed in an index in the back of the book rather than with each recipe. But don't let that stop you...the fact that it's there at all is one up on most other cook books!

I had gotten this from the library and within a few days knew I needed to buy it. I have several America's Test Kitchen cookbooks and they are my go-tos. This book does a great job of walking you through the overall concept of the Mediterranean diet, with details about meal planning and pantry items and their favorite brands of different ingredients. All of the recipes are well laid out and easy to follow, with many pictures and an interesting description for each one called "Why This Recipe Works." I've made several things so far, with Ash Wednesday being an all-cookbook menu featuring the lemon cod/hake with garlic potatoes and sauteed cherry tomatoes (I did the variation with the anchovies and capers - WOW), both of which were a big success, even with two teenage boys. Tonight it's going to be Linguine ai Frutti di Mare. Obviously getting this cookbook at the beginning of Lent was a smart move! It's a cookbook that is perfect for the person who knows nothing about eating this way but also has tons of great things for experienced cooks too. Definitely a book you will not regret purchasing!

good novel, but too many similarities to the books Koontz wrote just before and after this one

A mystery writer and his family are relentlessly pursued by a renegade profesional killer who may have some sort of psychic link to his quarry. The person(s) for whom the killer had worked - and bolted from - also get involved. I won't give away more as I don't want to spoil things for the reader.

"MR. MURDER" (1993) is the eleventh Koontz book that I have read. This novel employs the same style and has some similarities to both HIDEAWAY (1992) and DRAGON TEARS (1993) but transitions from supernatural ("nutcase antagonist with supernatural abilities") to science fiction (nutcase anatgonist for science-based reasons). "MR MURDER" introduces the "up against a high-tech organization that can track you anywhere" idea that Koontz delves into more deeply with his next novel "DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART" (1994) which also has some similarities to this one. So Koontz was in a slight rut during these years with his books not changing from one to the next as much as during his more inspired times. The core ideas are actually original enough in each of the aforementioned books, but similarities arise in the way the ideas are subsequently fleshed out. However, MR. MURDER is well-written and a little better written than his average book and a fun read. (I have never read a poorly written Koontz novel - he seems to be too much of a hard-working perfectionist to allow that to happen.)

I would rank MR. MURDER against his other books that I have read as follows. Note that I have a slight bias in favor of science fiction over horror and the supernatural. In chronological order:

#1 WATCHERS (1987) - Top tier Koontz! More frequently cited as his best novel than any other of his books and I totally agree. Suspense/love story/horror/ action/science fiction. Outstanding character development, even by Koontz standards. An absolutely wonderful dog.

#3 LIGHTENING (1988) - Inspired book with some of the same strengths as WATCHERS but a very different novel and almost as good.

#5 HIDEAWAY (1992) - Antagonist has supernatural abilities. Some similararities to Dragon Tears.

#9 DRAGON TEARS (1993) - Antagonist has supernatural abilities. The similarities to Hideaway make me rank it lower primarily because Hideaway was written first.

#8 MR. MURDER (1993) - Fairly strong middle tier Koontz. You can see the transition from Dragon Tears to Dark Rivers and it overlaps with both too much.

#6 DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART (1994) Science fiction-tinged conspiracy story with similarities to the movie "Enemy of the State".

#2 INTENSITY (1996) - Top tier Koontz! He breaks out his pseudo-rut with a vengeance. 2nd most frequently cited as his best book after WATCHERS. A straight horror story which is not my favorite genre, but the quality of this work is very high. I though the title was pretentious until I read the book: wow INTENSE!

#4 ODD THOMAS (2003) - Koontz's adoption of a rather different writing style is by many considered to work the best in this novel. Supernatural.

#11 THE FACE (2003) - Very slow moving but excellent character development. I had some trouble staying engaged in this one because it was so slow. Still a pretty good book. Supernatural.

#10 LIFE EXPECTANCY (2004) - Koontz's experimentation with a new writing style in the Odd Thomas direction. Has quirkiness and humor: he is competant at this, but humor is not Koontz's strength. Strong character development. Still a good book. No science fiction or supernatural stuff.

#7 THE HUSBAND (2006) - Koontz had changed his style again. Fast paced page-turner at the expense of character development. No science fiction or supernatural stuff. Ends too abruptly.

Don't believe the hype!

I don't know why do many negative reviews are out there about this book! Written in 1993 Dean was ahead of his time. The plot is great, gets betters the story goes. Be ready for a tale of many twists and turns. It's amazing how he gets you inside the head of a murderer. Has you question your own morality as the story goes. A dynamic ending will keep you guessing at how it all unfolds. Superb read!

A great book a right reader.

I'm a Postgres DBA and recently a new developer asked me for a book on Postgresql as an introduction to that RDBMS. I’ve pointed him to the official documentation, but it was too much for him. This book would be perfect for that developer.
It gives a concise introduction to developing for RDBMS and specifically Postgresql, just enough information to give an idea and even create simple code. The book does not have too many details, and unfortunately sometimes missing explanations. These omissions are understandable in a book of that volume. If you need deeper knowledge and understanding, you will need to go to documentation. But if you need a quick introduction, the book is perfect. It might be useful for a beginner or intermediate level developer. Advanced database users probably need to look for some other source of information.
It was a little strange to me that the book pays much attention to libpq, a library to connect to Postgresql from a C application, but does not have mention JDBC. I think there are more applications using Postgresql developed on Java that on C. Otherwise, the book covers most of the subjects required to begin developing for Postgresql.

a book with lots of well-designed examples

Given the hyped data science and big data framework buzzwords, the topic this book covers is definitely relevant and important to big data practitioners. The author appears to have a long and solid experience in the industry which gave him much practical knowledge on the subject. Having quickly skimmed through the book, my first impression is the book has a broad coverage of Apache Hive, ranging from the basic setup to security, data manipulation and the detailed explanation on the grammar, complemented with relatively straightforward examples.

My current feeling is, as a thin book of 200 pages, it did quite a good job.

Chapters 1-4 are good at describing basics of Postgres and PL/pgSQL

This book leaves me with mixed feelings. Chapters 1-4 are good at describing basics of Postgres and PL/pgSQL, but have somewhat fussy explanations (e.g. exclusion constraints).The purpose, order and content of other chapters are questionable. They cover one tenth of material that possibly can go there... These are not the reference and not the primer (especially the capter 9 on libpq).
