Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape, by Jessica Luther

"Jessica Luther studied history and the classics before marshaling her writing talent toward of-the-moment topics like sexual assault and college sports culture. Now she’s an investigative journalist, working from her adopted hometown, Austin, Tex., in what is perhaps the nation’s most college-obsessed state. Ms. Luther’s new book, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, examines the ‘programmatic manner’ in which sexual assaults are “swept under the rug by institutions both on campus and in the media."
--New York Times

“Not to reckon with Luther’s book would be an abdication not only of one’s moral faculty but also of one’s fandom . . . Luther doesn’t just want to save future victims; she wants to save college football.”
-- New York Times Book Review

“A significant and riveting look at how one of the greatest cultural tragedies of the millennial generation--the silencing of sexual violence against women on campus--is nurtured by a system of cover-ups and corporatized crises management.”
--Playboy.com

“In Unsportsmanlike Conduct, [Luther] draws on years of research and reporting to outline what she calls the ‘playbook’—all the standard, predictable ways that football programs, universities, the NCAA, and sports media typically respond when athletes are accused of rape or assault. It’s an infuriating, exhaustively researched catalogue of problems, from denial and toothless language to ignoring or discrediting the victim.”
--Elle.com

"The most important sports book of the year."
--Booklist, Starred Review

“Highly relevant, hard-hitting, much-needed information that reveals the widespread existence of rape by sports players on college campuses.”
--Kirkus Reviews

“Jessica Luther is a Texas-based investigative reporter who broke the story of Sam Ukwuachu, a football player at Baylor University who was then on trial for sexual assault. Since then she’s kept track of the dozens of sexual-assault claims made against college football players every year. Here, she looks at the relationship between football and sexual assault, the people and systems that perpetuate it, and how we can change the narrative going forward.”
--New York Magazine

“Investigative journalist Luther catalogues the abuses created and enabled by college football programs and suggests workable reforms.”
-- Boston Globe, One of the Best Sports Books of 2016

“A culmination of [Luther’s] dedication to finding truth in often murky waters.”
—ESPNw

The latest from Akashic's Edge of Sports imprint.

Football teams create playbooks, in which they draw up the plays they will use on the field. Playbooks are how teams work and why they win. This book is about a different kind of playbook: the one coaches, teams, universities, police, communities, the media, and fans seem to follow whenever a college football player is accused of sexual assault. It's a deep dive into how different institutions--the NCAA, athletic departments, universities, the media--run the same plays over and over again when these stories break. If everyone runs his play well, scrutiny dies down quickly, no institution ever has to change how it operates, and the evaporation of these cases into nothingness looks natural. In short, this playbook is why nothing ever changes.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct unpacks this societal playbook piece by piece, and not only advocates that we destroy the old plays, but also suggests we replace them with ones that will force us to finally do something about this issue.

Political sportswriter and Edge of Sports imprint curator Dave Zirin (the Nation) has never shied away from criticizing that which die-hard sports fans hold dear. The Edge of Sports titles will address issues across many different sports—football, basketball, swimming, tennis, etc.—and at both the professional and nonprofessional/collegiate levels. Furthermore, Zirin brings to the table select stories of athletes’ journeys and what they are facing and how they evolve both in their sport as well as against the greater backdrop of one’s life’s odyssey.

Review
“[Luther] knows too much — about how teams, like her own, fail to adequately handle allegations of rape and sexual assault. It's hard for her to reconcile that with blindly supporting a team as a fan. So she literally wrote the book on the topic. Her book is one of two playbooks — the first describes how college football programs and the sports media currently respond to allegations like this, and the second gives suggestions of how teams, schools, media and the NCAA could respond to them better, with genuine compassion for survivors and an actual understanding of the life-changing effects of such violence.”
--USA Today Sports/Football Four Podcast

"“College football has always sold itself as being about the high ideals of higher education, but sexual violence has become a mirror in which the sport, fueled by lucrative television contracts, insanely passionate fans and wealthy donors, puts itself before everything else: education, the well-being of women and, often, its own student-athletes.”
--Street Roots News

"We as a society owe a great debt to Jessica Luther. She has spent the last several years of her professional life dedicated primarily to reporting on the epidemic of sexual assault in college sports—football in particular. Her debut book Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape, published on Dave Zirin’s 'Edge of Sports' imprint at Akashic Books, isn’t simply a tell-all; she has rewritten the playbook for collegiate sports culture, giving survivors and supporters a reason to be hopeful about rooting for our teams without further sacrificing who we are."
--The Establishment

“A freelance journalist who helped break the story of Baylor University’s mishandling of rape cases, Luther examines how coaches, administrators, and athletes at universities across the country cover up and minimize these crimes. In the second half of the book, Luther presents a new playbook for how we could do better—such as by teaching consent, firing responsible parties, and changing how the media responds.”
— The Alcalde

“This sharp book is a must-read for anyone interested in either college sports or sexual assault politics.”
— Rebellious Magazine

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It imbues the conversation of what's happening on our college campuses with deep research and examples. And it's really must reading for all of us who claim to want to be a part of the solution. "
--Dallas Morning News

“In her first book, Jessica Luther challenges the college sports establishment to hold athletes accountable when they commit rape, sexual assault and domestic violence.”
--Texas Observer

“The book delves into instances of sexual violence perpetrated by football players and the response to their crimes by their athletic departments, universities, the NCAA and the media, to show there is a "playbook" for dealing with violence in football that is common to football institutions nationwide.”
--Dallas Observer

"While it’s often easier for journalists and fans alike to ignore the issue completely, Luther addresses this topic head on, laying out one playbook for better understanding the problems at hand, and a separate playbook for fixing them. The result is a harrowing, detailed account of the ways our national pastime is intertwined with violence against women, and a somewhat hopeful look at how that connection might be disrupted."
--Think Progress

"Luther’s book is an investigation into of the most major intersections of rape culture and sports culture in the States: college football. With so many high-profile cases of late piling up and attracting sensationalist coverage of late, it’s crucial to have a sober-minded, feminist narrative that ties it all together."
--Flavorwire

"In Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Luther isn’t solely telling sports fans how bad things are. She’s also done the incredible emotional labor of building solutions that might give us back some of the joy we once had on game days . . . We can no longer say the problem is too big to solve."
--Rewire

"Parents would be well-advised to pick up a copy of a new book by Jessica Luther: Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Luther, an investigative reporter who was born pumping the garnet and gold blood that comes with being the progeny of two Florida State Seminoles parents, finds a lot of commonality in the unwritten mission statements shared by Florida State, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee. The schools’ unwritten shared mission appears to be to use all of the resources under the schools’ influence to silence young women who accuse their Division-1 (D-1) football players of sexual assault and to create rape culture where women’s bodies become the commodities for which young men’s athletic skills are the rewards."
--RawStory

“From Steubenville to Vanderbilt, stories of rape culture and football repeatedly made local and national headlines in the last couple of years. Though problems with sexual violence have coincided with football since the sport's inception, today a handful of survivors and journalists are bringing the issue to a national spotlight. Jessica Luther, an investigative journalist, is one of them. For the past three years, Luther has added to the dialogue surrounding rape in football. Since 2013, she has kept track of over 110 cases of sexual assault in college football.”
--Broadly (VICE)

“Jessica Luther’s take on the landscape of major college sports is clear and convincing . . . What distinguishes Unsportsmanlike Conduct from any number of books . . . is Luther’s emphasis on what could be done to promote change.”
--Cognoscenti

“Jessica Luther’s reporting on scandals at Baylor, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee is indispensable to understanding the most explosive, damning story in sports today: the propagation of rape culture in college football. The institutions have failed us all. Rather than teaching young men something about morals, decency and lawfulness, universities have circled the wagons to protect the assailants. Luther’s new book, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, addresses the problem head on. It’s the latest release from Dave Zirin’s Edge of Sports imprint at Akashic, so you can rest assured no punches are pulled. With any luck we may even start to see substantive reform.”
--LitHub

“Luther explores the playbook that different institutions — universities, the media, the NCAA — seem to follow when it comes to handling sexual assault among student athletes. If everyone runs their plays well, scrutiny dies down quickly, no institution ever has to change how it operates, and the evaporation of these cases into nothingness looks natural. In short, this playbook is why nothing ever changes. Unsportsmanlike Conduct unpacks this societal playbook piece by piece, and not only advocates that we destroy the old plays, but also suggests we replace them with ones that will force us to finally do something about this issue.”
--BookPeople Blog

"Jessica Luther is an Austin-based journalist doing powerful, important work. Luther . . . delves into the grim complexities of sexual assault involving football programs on college campuses, exploring the nexus of toxic masculinity, sports-as-big-business and privilege that permits (or often encourages or forces) the victim to become invisible while keeping the focus on the players and how such an event will impact their lives, often with the complicity (tacit or explicit) of coaches, police and the university itself. A crucial read."
--Austin American-Statesman

"Luther does a tremendous job . . . Unsportsmanlike Conduct is a must read for any fan who is no longer satisfied with turning a blind eye toward one of the biggest issues facing not only sports but college campuses. Luther brilliantly analyzes how rape and assault cases have been handled, identifying troubling patterns that continue to persist. Her practical and well thought out proposals for change make too much sense and make you wonder: Why aren’t these solutions implemented already?"
--The White Bronco

"Luther’s debut book, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, explores the ‘playbook’ that universities, the NCAA and the media follow when college football players are accused of rape."
--Austin Monthly

"This is a takedown of the systematic way the NCAA, colleges, coaches, and teams respond (or rather, don’t respond) when a player is accused of sexual assault."
--The Undefeated

"Luther’s book . . . will be a must read for fans not just of college football but all sport. As well as a vital, pragmatic text for everyday feminism. Unsportsmanlike Conduct is a hard, steady look at the heart of rape culture and how it’s perpetuated . . . She is writing about something that implicates her at nearly every level as well as each of us reading. Luther doesn’t do so to tear down programs or sport, but to get us all to rectify our actions, allegiances, and excuses."
--Misanthropester

"An essential text . . . More than just for sports fans or those in college, this is a book that dismantles many of the issues in society that have led to college football becoming the perfect microcosm of rape culture . . . Luther outlines many ways to help clean up these issues and in her due diligence leaves readers, and colleges, with the tools to make it happen."
--Le Noir Auteur

"The most essential book that new students will not be seeing on their class syllabus this semester, but they should . . . Unsportsmanlike Conduct is the new playbook for colleges and sports departments when it comes to rape and sexual assault."
--The Current

"[Unsportsmanlike Conduct] is very powerful, breaking down a systemic disease of sexual violence and assault against women within the college football apparatus. [Luther] illuminates the various methods employed by coaches, athletic directors, university officials, players, fans, the NCAA, local and national media, and local police departments that not only allows such heinous behavior, but that actually encourages it."
--The Shadow League

"The facts don't lie and neither does Jessica Luther."
--That Sports Girl, Corner Pub Sports

"Few subjects are as difficult, or as important, as this one, and Jessica Luther handles it flawlessly. We have to demand that schools take better care of our kids; it's that simple. Luther gives us the tools to do so, breaking down exactly where we are, how we got here, and--most importantly--how the system can change."
—Rachel Nichols, ESPN

"Jessica Luther is one of the most important voices on gender issues in sports. And this book does not disappoint: it is essential reading for anyone who hopes to better understand the intersection of gender and our sports landscape."
—Kate Fagan, EspnW

"The maxim of the law is silence gives consent. Back when nobody was talking about AIDS, the maxim was silence equals death. There exists in our major sports a malignant culture of sexual assault and bureaucratic indifference. There is nothing this culture resists more than plain talk, and Jessica Luther has been speaking more plainly about this ongoing obscenity than almost anyone else. This is a hard, necessary, and important book, a book by someone who refuses to be silent, and damn sure refuses to consent."
—Charles P. Pierce, author of Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free

"Luther's well-researched book speaks powerfully to the complicated landscape of sexual assaults on college campuses--including the greedy interests at play in denying it--and provides us a much-needed road map for instituting effective change. I highly recommend this book for anyone who believes that student safety should matter more than athletic success, and that we all have a role to play in assuring that it does."
—Wendy Davis, former Texas state senator, founder of Deeds Not Words

"Unsportsmanlike Conduct is an important book by an important writer. Jessica Luther's place as both sports fan and empathetic observer makes her perfect to explore the shameful ways universities and their athletic programs address sexual assault, as no one could say she doesn't love football. She just loves people more, as she should, and this book is an important mirror to make us question how sports became more important to the world than the women who make life possible."
—Bomani Jones, ESPN

"In painstaking and passionate detail, Jessica Luther challenges those of us who have become seduced by the emotion and ritual of sport to stop being willfully ignorant about the significant problem of sexual assault and sexual violence. Sports, for many of us, have always been characterized as a lighthearted escape from the problems that dominate 'real life,' but this book reminds us that our ability to compartmentalize and rationalize these terrible crimes has cost us our collective humanity."
—Jemele Hill, ESPN

and I'm very glad Jessica Luther was the one to write it
By A. Parker
This book is so important, and I'm very glad Jessica Luther was the one to write it. Her research is thorough and meticulous, she applies and intersectional lens in her assessments, and she shows the compassion and empathy that is so often lacking for victims of sexual assault. The colleges, sports organizations, and sports media would do well to adopt her ideas about how they can improve things and show that they truly do care about victims of violence more than they do about winning trophies. Luther is fair to all parties involved, and simply wants to see us do better by people who have been harmed in the most egregious ways.

Incredible.
By Aminda Joy
I have been waiting for months for this book to come out, and it was everything I hoped it would be. I felt like I had been hit in the gut reading some passages. I found myself nodding emphatically in agreement, wanting to cry, wanting to yell in anger, wanting to get up and do something. I highlighted so many passages, and am going to be passing this off for friends to read-- I wish everyone could read this.

Jessica Luther is excellent at research, and it really shows. The stories and statistics give a very clear picture of this problem, in a way that doesn't allow you to explain anything away or make excuses. She holds everyone accountable, from the actual perpetrators of the crime, to the coaches and athletic departments, Title IX offices, police, and media. The look into the "playbook" for handling sexual assault as it exists now is incredibly thorough.

The solutions she offers seem to pretty much be common sense, but, sadly, would be almost radical if put into play. I like that she offered a solution for every problem she addressed in the first part, from the big to those that seem small and inconsequential, such as locker room talk.

As a woman who loves sports more than anything, but hates the way it treats women, making me feel unwelcome and unvalued and even sometimes like it sees me as less than human, I enjoyed reading this from the perspective of a woman who loves sports just as much as I do, and hates this insidious part of it like I do. I like that she addressed how she wishes she could compartmentalize and keep her knowledge out of her mind while she enjoys football, but she can't-- I feel the same way.

And finally, as a woman pursuing a career in sports, who currently works in a college men's team locker room, her offering that women in locker rooms and all kinds of sport jobs will contribute to helping to work on this issue because it forces these men to humanize women was a great encouragement for me personally. It is important to me that I take what I learned reading this book and push to make it a part of what I do in the industry.

I love and recommend this book with my whole heart.

and understanding how violence is upheld and permitted within college football spaces is an essential step towards changing thos
By Amazon Customer
Unsportsmanlike Conduct is a thorough, unflinching review of how sexual assault within college football is allowed to go on, and the ways it is deeply connected to sports culture. Luther writes in lucid prose that does not glorify descriptions of violence, but instead illuminates the areas we often prefer to keep in shadow because they are uncomfortable and tell us uncomfortable things about the world in which we live. Whether or not you're a sports fan, sports affects culture, and understanding how violence is upheld and permitted within college football spaces is an essential step towards changing those spaces for the better.

The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR, by Al Ries, Laura Ries

Bestselling authors and world-renowned marketing strategists Al and Laura Ries usher in the new era of public relations.

Today's major brands are born with publicity, not advertising. A closer look at the history of the most successful modern brands shows this to be true. In fact, an astonishing number of brands, including Palm, Starbucks, the Body Shop, Wal-Mart, Red Bull and Zara have been built with virtually no advertising.

Using in-depth case histories of successful PR campaigns coupled with those of unsuccessful advertising campaigns, The Fall of Advertising provides valuable ideas for marketers -- all the while demonstrating why

  • advertising lacks credibility, the crucial ingredient in brand building, and how only PR can supply that credibility;
  • the big bang approach advocated by advertising people should be abandoned in favor of a slow build-up by PR;
  • advertising should only be used to maintain brands once they have been established through publicity.

Bold and accessible, The Fall of Advertising is bound to turn the world of marketing upside down.

Amazon.com Review
In The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR, longtime marketing strategist Al Ries and his daughter/business partner Laura Ries offer solid arguments championing the latter over the former for modern-day brand building. Such a stance is hardly new for these two, who have jointly, individually, and with others written eight previous books on related topics since Al penned The Positioning Era Cometh for Advertising Age some three decades ago. What's fresh this time is the dissection of contemporary corporate hits--like Starbucks, Botox, eBay, and even Harry Potter--that have eschewed traditional advertising and nevertheless soared to the top through the savvy use of public relations. The authors spend the first part of the book discussing how advertising lost credibility among consumers as it became more of a creative art than a sales tool, and the second part showing how PR subsequently supplanted it in effectiveness. Using the above examples and others, they explain how such practices can work in various situations (building a new brand, rebuilding an old one, dealing with line extensions, etc.), as well as ways advertising can still be usefully employed (primarily to maintain a brand and "keep it on course"). The result is both provocative and practical. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly
Marketing strategists Ries and Ries spend all 320 pages of their latest book arguing one point: skillful public relations is what sells, not advertising. Case in point: the failure of Pets.com's sock puppet ads. However, in a chapter devoted to dot-com advertising excesses, the authors never mention that many dot-coms had miserable business plans and neophyte management. (The Rieses may be counting on the sock puppet to sell another commodity, as a deflated sock puppet dominates the book's jacket.) Today, most small companies aren't bloated with venture capital to buy TV ads, yet the book has little practical advice on how these companies' executives should use public relations, particularly PR's most important role: crisis control. Some readers might resent paying $24.95 for what amounts to an advertisement for pricey PR consulting firms like Ries & Ries. The authors frequently poke fun at the most outrageous TV ads of recent years, paralleling Sergio Zyman's The End of Advertising As We Know It (reviewed above), a more thoughtful critique of current advertising trends. The inherent flaw in the Rieses' logic: time and again they cite ad campaigns for new products that are "off message" and then say how much sales declined; this supports the notion that products and services are sold by good advertising. Although their book is occasionally entertaining, the argument is simplistic and self-serving. Illus.

From Library Journal
The father-and-daughter authors who previously collaborated on The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding here attempt to explain the difference between advertising and public relations, arguing that PR should be used instead of advertising to launch new brands. Once a brand is established, advertising may then be used to maintain the brand in the consumer's mind. The book is arranged in four chapters, with the first chapter describing the "fall of advertising" and offering examples of failed campaigns such as those for New Coke and Pets.com. Subsequent chapters describe the rise of PR and its effective use by brands like Sony PlayStation and Red Bull, tout the new role advertising can play in maintaining brands, and attempt to finally differentiate between advertising and PR. Throughout, the authors' mantra is "advertising failed, PR would have worked," but they never fully explain how and why PR would have been more successful for the companies and the brands used as examples. More of the same...
By Tom McCuin
"The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR," the 2002 offering from marketing experts Al and Laura Ries, is not a bad book for young entrepreneurs looking for simple advice on promoting a startup. As a serious business text, it falls far short.

The Rieses promise a new angle on their tried-and-true formula. Disappointingly, "The Fall of Advertising" is just a rehash of earlier work that reduces the field of public relations to press agentry. While Al Ries describes himself as “legendary,” he and his co-author manage to completely misunderstand the strategic value of public relations.

Al Ries has made a fortune repeating the same ideas with new headlines. In 1972, he and Jack Trout published “The Positioning Era Cometh” in "Advertising Age" magazine, itself an extension of a 1969 "Industrial Marketing" article. In these articles (and their first book, "Positioning"), they argued that the advertising landscape required a shift in philosophy from “image,” where a brand’s reputation was the most important factor in its success or failure, to “positioning,” where a brand’s success was to be determined by “what the advertising does for the product in the prospect's mind.”

Ries and Trout turned the popularity of these articles into four books, including the still-popular "22 Immutable Laws of Marketing." Through these and six books additional (on his own or with Laura), Ries has not introduced any more truly new ideas.

"The Fall of Advertising" should have been limited to a trade journal article. The book is summed-up in the third and fourth paragraphs of the introduction: “You can’t launch a new brand with advertising because advertising has no credibility,” and, “You can launch new brands only with publicity or public relations [which] allows you to tell your story indirectly through third-party outlets, primarily the media.” The authors proceed to repeat variations of these two maxims for the rest of the book (“credibility” appears no less than 47 times). They add bits of anecdotal “evidence” along the way, more often than not citing the same brands—Duracell and Energizer; Hertz and Avis; Coke and Pepsi; Budweiser and Miller—used in many of their previous works.

The failure of "The Fall of Advertising" lies not with its assertions. Most of what the Rieses say is largely true, if overly simplified. Few would argue that consumers trust a journalist’s product review more than they trust an advertisement. The book’s failure is that, in addition to short-selling the complex field of public relations, so many of their bold predictions have become so demonstrably, horribly wrong. These failed predictions fatally undermine the book’s credibility.

Al Ries is not afraid to make bold predictions. Among his predictions in "Marketing," he said Microsoft would become a high-profile failure like IBM for trying to extend its dominance of the operating system market into dominance of the business software market. He doubted Of-fice’s ability to overtake Lotus, WordPerfect, and Harvard Graphics (remember them?). Accord-ing to business data company Statista, nearly one in five enterprise software dollars worldwide now goes to Microsoft.

The bold predictions don’t stop in "Fall." The Rieses fault Procter and Gamble for the Crest Whitestrips product, predicting its failure due to: launching the product with advertising instead of publicity; using a “line extension” name (thus weakening Crest’s position in toothpaste); and “failing to give the product a meaningful category name.” Again, according to Statista, in 2007-8 (five years after "Fall’s" publication), three of the top four tooth-whitening strip brands were Crest products, accounting for a combined $130.1 million in sales, or 56 percent of the market.

Most incredibly, the Rieses predicted, “We don’t think that 3G phones are going to be-come a big business.” After reading this (especially if reading the Kindle version on an iPhone), it is tempting to dismiss the rest of the book.

But the “Postscript” is where the Rieses get the most right, and also the most wrong. They argue that advertising continues to dominate public relations partly due to advertising’s hold on the business curriculum, citing a survey which found, “more than half of MBA programs offered coursework in advertising, but only twelve offered coursework in PR.” They also cor-rectly point out that PR is second-fiddle to advertising because “Nine out of the ten largest U.S. PR firms are owned by just three ad conglomerates,” with Edelman the lone exception.

But they also completely miss the point of strategic public relations, which is the final nail in the coffin for their arguments. Their narrow view of public relations as nothing more than a way to deliver marketing messages through earned media is completely off the mark. They criticize public relations practitioners for being “the voice of the consumer inside the corporation, rather than the voice of the corporation itself.” They further state, “Too many PR professionals would rather counsel the CEO than work in the trenches with the marketing folks.”

They criticize the industry for focusing on “facilitating the exchange of value in our world” rather than “building brands” (and in their own words, “everything is a brand”).

The power of public relations lies not just in its ability to add credibility to nascent brands. It can do that for sure. The real power of public relations, the strategic value it brings to a company, goes beyond the narrow confines of marketing. The value of public relations lies in its ability to facilitate a conversation between company and consumer, helping the company to understand the wants and needs of is customers. The customer needs a voice within the company; public relations provides that voice. That might not fit Al and Laura Ries’s vision of what public relations should be, but their vision of public relations is as wrong as their vision for 3G phones.

I'm glad I bought it used
By Alexander Hinojosa
Where to start. There are so many overwhelming obvious ineptitude's in this book it is amazing. The two writers of this book have cherry picked examples of bad marketing strategies and try to argue that good PR could have saved bad products or ideas. I find the most amusing part of this book to be examples the authors use of their "good ideas" which are usually terrible.

It is also painfully obvious the writers have no clue as to what consumers want. They talk about the convergence of products and how this is a fad that wont catch-on, examples used included interconnect phones.

Really this book should be called Bad Advertising Dissected. It is almost painful to read this book. I feel dumber for having wasted my time reading this "book".

Save your time, read something else, and let this book fall into obscurity where it belongs.

The role of PR vs advertising
By Andrew Everett
The thesis is that PR is needed to launch a brand and establish its identity; advertising is for maintaining an existing brand's position. The reason is that advertising has no credibility, so it can only remind people of what they already believe.

Huge sums of money are spent on advertising campaigns with a poor track record of return on investment. The authors cite multiple examples in which award-winning advertising campaigns led to declining sales and market share. And therein lies their point. Advertising agencies are more focused on winning awards for their creativity, rather than helping their clients sell product. The ads lose function and become art.

Another theme repeated in this book is the authors' disdain for brand extension. This rings familiar from The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, a book Al Ries coauthored with Jack Trout. Line extension dilutes the meaning of the original brand. A new brand is a PR opportunity.

I don't agree with everything in the book. I think Pets.com failed because it was a dumb business model, not simply because the brand was launched with advertising rather than PR. Also, the authors claim that IBM was unsuccessful in the PC business because they didn't create a new brand name for it. I think there were many other factors. Nevertheless, I found the book engaging and insightful.

Self-Fulfillment, by Alan Gewirth

Cultures around the world have regarded self-fulfillment as the ultimate goal of human striving and as the fundamental test of the goodness of a human life. The ideal has also been criticized, however, as egotistical or as so value-neutral that it fails to distinguish between, for example, self-fulfilled sinners and self-fulfilled saints. Alan Gewirth presents here a systematic and highly original study of self-fulfillment that seeks to overcome these and other arguments and to justify the high place that the ideal has been accorded. He does so by developing an ethical theory that ultimately grounds the value of self-fulfillment in the idea of the dignity of human beings.

Gewirth begins by distinguishing two models of self- fulfillment--aspiration-fulfillment and capacity-fulfillment--and shows how each of these contributes to the intrinsic value of human life. He then distinguishes between three types of morality--universalist, particularist, and personalist--and shows how each contributes to the values embodied in self-fulfillment. Building on these ideas, he develops a Odialectical' conception of reason that shows how human rights are central to self-fulfillment. Gewirth also argues that self-fulfillment has a social as well as an individual dimension: that the nature of society and the obstacles that disadvantaged groups face affect strongly the character of the self-fulfillment that persons can achieve.

Bold in scope and rigorous in execution, Self-Fulfillment is a powerful new contribution to moral, social, and political philosophy.

Need more examples
By H. Bulut
This is just an initial reaction: not a comprehensive review. It is not an easy read. Perhaps intended for philosophers. More examples beyond Nazis and Stalin would be helpful. There should be great examples from autobiographies of scientists, artists, movies, etc, that is, success examples that people can relate to. This could be made much more interesting rather than providing an abstract discussion.

Bone-dry prose requiring much patience, but a rewarding work of genius
By The Ultimate Philosopher
This is the kind of work that should be recognized as one of the most important contributions to ethical theory in the last quarter- to half-century. One problem that gets in the way of this is the author's very dry prose. You need much patience but the experience, I think, is ultimately rewarding. Gewirth takes great care to distinguish his ideal of self-fulfillment from competing though closely-related concepts such as self-actualization or perfectionism. His argument for the dialectical necessity of morality and the Principle of Generic Consistency (PGC for short) is thought-provoking on its own. He takes the very important step of applying his idea of self-fulfillment to necessary social-community relationships. Gewirth has a keen mind for working out subtle points and distinctions in fine (albeit bone-dry) detail. A fine companion work to David L. Norton's (more engagingly-written) Personal Destinies: A Philosophy of Ethical Individualism. (Princeton University Press seems to be a specialty outlet for this kind of work....) These works in concert sound way too close to the moral truth not to command close philosophical study/scrutiny.

The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time, by Jonathan Weiner

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

On a desert island in the heart of the Galapagos archipelago, where Darwin received his first inklings of the theory of evolution, two scientists, Peter and Rosemary Grant, have spent twenty years proving that Darwin did not know the strength of his own theory. For among the finches of Daphne Major, natural selection is neither rare nor slow: it is taking place by the hour, and we can watch.

In this dramatic story of groundbreaking scientific research, Jonathan Weiner follows these scientists as they watch Darwin's finches and come up with a new understanding of life itself. The Beak of the Finch is an elegantly written and compelling masterpiece of theory and explication in the tradition of Stephen Jay Gould.

Amazon.com Review
On the Galapagos Islands Charles Darwin gave his first hint at his theory of natural selection, writing about the finches he studied there. In Darwin's time there was no proof of this theoretical mechanism for evolution. Indeed it would have been thought absurd to imagine observing it actually happen; the process was thought to take geological time spans. Weiner, an outstanding science journalist, details research done in the last 20 years that proves otherwise. Biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant have documented the evolution of Darwin's Galapagos finches, demonstrating that it is neither rare nor slow, but can be watched by the hour. Weiner's superb account reads like a thriller and won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction.

From Publishers Weekly
For more than 20 years Rosemary and Peter Grant have divided their time between Daphne Major in the Galapagos and Princeton University. On the tiny island they have intensively studied six species of Darwin's ground finches; at Princeton, they analyze their collected data. In following their work Weiner ( Planet Earth ) tells a remarkable story of continuing evolution, and of the painstaking research that reveals it. The Grants documented two dramatic changes in the finches: after a drought in 1977 reduced their numbers by 85%, the surviving birds became larger, in weight, wingspan and beak; after El Nino's floods in 1983, the trend was reversed. The Grants found that during food shortages the difference of one millimeter in the size of a finch's beak could determine its life or death. In his eloquent and richly informative report, Weiner surveys as well research on evolution being done on crossbills, sticklebacks and fruit flies. Illustrations. 40,000 first printing; BOMC, QPB , History Book Club and Natural Science Book Club alternates.

From Library Journal
This is an account of Peter and Rosemary Grant's research on the microevolutionary modifications that occur in finch beaks as they adapt to environmental changes. Analysis of data collected from 18,000 birds on a Galapagos island over 21 years conclusively demonstrates that the pressures of natural selection are currently altering wild populations. Also, by incorporating others' work on present-day evolutionary variations in fish, insects, and microbes, Weiner (The Next One Hundred Years, LJ 2/1/90) challenges the concept of evolution as a time-frozen process. Harmonized with the writings of Charles Darwin, this book provides the facts to bring alive evolution as an ongoing process. Highly recommended for general collections, but informed readers would do better with Peter Grant's own Ecology and Evolution of Darwin's Finches (Princeton Univ. Pr., 1986).

"Speciation Has never been observed..."
By Otter
A great introduction to legendary field-work. It isn't a critical analysis: it's a hymn of sorts to some admirable scientists spanning a century and a half. But it sees even in their flaws (e.g., Darwin's slow-dawning comprehension on the significance of his finches) a model for how science can and should work.

By coincidence I was reading this around the time I found myself in a conversation with a creationist who claimed there had never been an observable case of speciation. (I dunno, don't ask me.). While I didn't engage, because such conversations are usually non-starters, it was rather nice to have a terrific real-world compendium of Darwin's evolving thought as it's reflected in the field work.

The book wants constant updating, though. Many tantalizing hints are dropped that are not developed but which might be, given the advances in published research.

but I thought the narrative did not maintain as coherent a story line as in the best popular science writing
By T. Wasow
I read this while on a cruise in the Galapagos, which made it more interesting to me than if I had been somewhere else. The story of the Grants' research on the "Darwin finches" is fascinating, but I thought the narrative did not maintain as coherent a story line as in the best popular science writing. I thought the reflections on larger issues (e.g. science vs. religious dogma, the causes and effects of climate change, and the rapid evolution of bacteria and viruses in reaction to modern medicines) at the end of the book were well done and among the best sections.

"The Beak Says it All"
By Russell A. Rohde MD
"The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time", by Jonathan Weiner. Vintage Books (Random House) 1995, NY. ISBN: 978-0-679-73337-9, PB 332 Pgs. in 8" x 5 1/8" format that includes 15 Pg. Biblio. plus 8 Pg. Index.

Inveiglements include several dozen B/W illustrations, most enticingly a dozen Galapagos Finch drawings by Charles Darwin and an essential map of the Galapagos Islands and the route taken by Darwin on his biological sojourn, particularly useful while reading of the various ecological areas of Darwin Finches, fauna and flora areas being researched, independently, by various investigative biologists, most notably Peter and Rosemary Grant.

Author Weiner is an esteemed science writer, editor and authored "Planet Earth" and "The Next One Hundred Years". He writes in erudite prose easily understood by non-scientists and in a style that provokes active thinking on the part of the reader: - this reader/writer interaction leads to a much fuller understanding of his informational-educational mission in writing this book than too-oft seen in most science books, and is significantly crisp when the subject of evolution is being discussed, a topic that is more abstracted of being theory than most static reviews of geology, history, and the various arts.

So, Weiner presents us with a three part dissertation on "Evolution in the Flesh", "New Beings on the This Earth", and "G.O.D". Overall, Weiner provides convincing facts and ideas with on-going experimental studies indicating that evolution is an on-going phenomenon and pays homage to Charles Darwin's tedious studies and contemplations prior to publication of his "Origin of Species".
