A PROMINENT PSYCHOLOGIST OFFERS HIS THOUGHTS

Carl Rogers (1902-1987) was an influential American psychologist and (along with Abraham Maslow) among the founders of humanistic psychology.

He states in the Foreword to this 1970 book, "I have written papers and given talks on various facets of the burgeoning movement toward encounter groups... So I decided to assemble together for publication both the talks and papers I have given, together with new material written for this book, in the hope that they will stimulate a thoughtful analysis and a clarification of differences regarding this incredibly expanding trend. As with all my more recent books, this is definitely a personal document. It does not pretend to be a scholarly survey of the field, nor a profound psychological or sociological analysis of encounter groups... This book is written out of living personal experience, and those whose lives are described and whose statements are quoted are living, struggling people. I hope it will convey MY perception of one of the exciting developments of our time: the intensive group experience. And I hope it will help familiarize you with what an encounter group IS, and what it can MEAN."

Grade 9 Up–This dictionary is both too modest and too boastful: it condenses hundreds of myths and includes deities, heroes, saints, historical figures, animals, etc., with connections to art and literature, yet it is hardly exhaustive. Double the length of Tresidder's Dictionary of Symbols (Chronicle, 1998; o.p.), it preserves that work's format and adds a brief bibliography. Most of the author's Symbols and Their Meanings (Sterling, 2000) is also found here. Marginalia include primary-source citations and cross-references. Violet backgrounds distinguish 60 short articles on such diverse topics as Trojan War heroes, the Buddha, angels, avatars of Vishnu, dance, liberty, the jaguar, and more. The book includes many non-Western myths and symbols, but a broad perspective in some articles is lacking. The features on architecture, chastity, the ages of man, and religious orders are entirely European in focus. Many articles–e.g., on music, floods, fish, dragons, death, creation–are culturally broader. Africa deserves better coverage. Small black-and-white and/or violet graphics–useful, if not compelling–appear on most pages. Clare Gibson's Signs & Symbols (Grange) and Miranda Bruce-Mitford's Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols (DK, both 1996), though less complete, will attract browsers with their color photos. Hans Biedermann's Dictionary of Symbolism (Facts On File, 1992) is better illustrated, more detailed on Western symbols, less global; Tresidder's volume offers high value for cost, if there is a myth/symbol gap on the reference shelf.–Patricia D. This is the first symbols source to be labeled complete, although the introduction does not specify the qualities that make it so. Its 2,000 entries are twice the number found in other resources on the topic, such as Tresidder's 1998 Dictionary of Symbols: An Illustrated Guide to Traditional Images, Icons, and Emblems (much of which is duplicated in the newer book). The alphabetically arranged entries focus on classical and Christian symbolism but encompass other traditions worldwide. In addition to traditional symbols (e.g., objects, animals, flowers, shapes), the volume includes legends, themes, or concepts important for understanding systems of symbols and historical, mythological, or religious figures. It also includes brief references to the use of the symbol in art. For example, the entry alchemy is identical to that in the Dictionary of Symbols except for a reference to the depiction of alchemists in Vasari's painting The Alchemist's Laboratory. The Complete Dictionary's articles range from a few sentences to one-page panels on more comprehensive topics (Colours; Elements; Music, musical instruments). Its format is similar to Dictionary of Symbols, with see references and sources placed awkwardly in the margins, where they might be missed. Bibliographical references are minimal; most cite only basic sources such as Psalms 42:1 for Stag or Pliny the Elder's Natural History for Phoenix. A geographically arranged bibliography at the end of the volume includes a good selection of older, classic texts on art, mythology, and religion. Illustrations are in-house drawings from original artifacts rather than actual photos. The Complete Dictionary of Symbols is an acceptable reference book for home and small libraries and for public libraries that need a symbol source for general readers. It overlaps very little with the fascinating, graphically oriented Symbols.com (a free Internet source). It is unnecessary for larger collections that already have scholarly sources such as Carl G. Liungman's Dictionary of Symbols (Norton, 1994), Hans Biedermann and James Hulbert's Dictionary of Symbolism: Cultural Icons and the Meaning behind Them (Facts On File, 1992), and Anthony Stevens' excellent, thematically arranged Ariadne's Clue: A Guide to the Symbols of Humankind (Princeton, 1999). Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. The other reviews for this are for the old edition and not the Brief Introduction to Education, so please be aware that the date of the reviews is before this text was published.

In reading the other reviews, it was obvious that the reviewers missed the point of the text--it is to be used in an introductory course, not in a course where preservice or practicing teachers would be designing lessons and units.

This text provides a great overview of the educational issues and problems that someone contemplating becoming a teacher needs to know about before investing time, energy, and money into obtaining certification. The brief version is much better, more up-to-date and student friendly than the original text by Sadker and Sadker.

For anyone contemplating being a teacher, the issues presented in this text may help you decide if you really have what it takes to be a classroom teacher. It gives an overview of the political, economic, and social issues facing educators as well as the historic perspective of American Education.

Well worth the cost.

We are being taught opinions from bigots

This textbook is filled with the authors biased opinions and lacking anything of any real educational value. I don't like being taught from biased sources, whether they be liberal or conservative. Plenty of times I had to stop reading because I became so frustrated by the authors bigotry. I hope teachers will not use this for their class. I have not learned anything of value from this book about the subject I was taking, but I did learn to be on the lookout for people like Sadker who want to convey bigotry in a college setting. I really felt like I wasted my time and money, but fortunately I was able to sell the book back for close to what I paid for it. I can't believe this passes as a college textbook.

This book was used for my freshman Foundations of Education course. I found the book a joy to read, and it provided a balanced look at the teaching profession. This one book that will definantly not be sold back. The supplemental materials on the CD-ROM seemed to be high quality, but I disliked having to read them on my computer and ended up ignoring the CD.

I'm going through a difficult time with my partner at the moment. This book has given me insight and a path to follow to clear away my past issues while at the same time being able to cope with my partners infidelity. I'm still unsure where I want my relationship to go and I am giving myself the space to figure that out. In this month since I have found out about my partner, I haven't had the emotional trauma usually associated with these situations. Instead I have been able to look internally and heal that which needs healing at the time. This has given me a great opportunity for working on my self.

About the Author
Dr. Todd Duncan is an Assistant Professor of Physics at Pacific University. Todd combines a research background in physics and astronomy with experience teaching science concepts to a wide range of audiences. He holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Chicago and physics degrees from Cambridge University and the University of Illinois. Todd has taught interdisciplinary science courses ranging from elementary school to graduate level, and is currently on the physics faculty at Pacific University, president of the non-profit Science Integration Institute, and adjunct faculty in the Center for Science Education at Portland State University.

Dr. Craig Tyler is on the physics faculty at Fort Lewis College. He holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Chicago, and bachelor of science degrees in mechanical engineering and entrepreneurial management from the University of Pennsylvania. Craig's research and professional interests include dark matter, black holes, and recent advances in physics and astronomy education. I bought this book for use in one semester of Cosmic Origins and was lucky enough to have Craig Tyler as my professor. I can definitely see where (at least half of) the intellectual and wacky humor comes from. The quantized layout of this book starts with the simplest of local astronomy science and zooms the reader through the astronomical distance ladder, the nature of both 'luminescent' and 'dark' matter, Big Bang Theory, cosmic harmonics, dark energy and quantum mechanics, and even the origins of life and consciousness. Is the universe 'fine-tuned' for human life? Is it likely we'll contact aliens any time soon? These questions, too, are addressed in a logical manner. As it's been mentioned in other reviews, the book is not just a class text - it is layman accessible because it was written in stages of complexity so that it can be read by anybody. I've casually read works by Greene, Kaku, Hawking, and Sagan, and I highly recommend this one to all.

Your Cosmic Context

"Your Cosmic Context" is the best cosmology book I have read, and I've read more than a dozen. It is well suited for anyone interested in the latest discoveries in this fascinating field.

I've taught college astronomy for 30 years and am delighted that Duncan and Tyler have written an introduction to cosmology book that is thought provoking, gracefully written, informative and well designed. Unlike most textbooks, "Your Cosmic Context" provokes the reader to ponder the Big Questions such as "What is the universe made of?" and "How did consciousness arise?" and "What is the future of the universe?" 'Your Cosmic Context" is marketed as a textbook, but can be enjoyed by anyone curious about the universe we call home.

The book opens with an excellent introduction to the sky we see and explains how we have arrived at our current understanding of our place in the cosmos. For the math-phobic, all equations are explained in words and the reader comes to realize that mathematics is a language that can be easily understood by the non-scientist.

'"Your Cosmic Context" is a refreshing addition to the field of cosmology written by two young Ph.D cosmologists who studied at the University of Chicago, one of the most prestigious universities for cosmology research in the world.

This book is up to date, a pleasure to read and visually stunning. I give it a 5 star rating.

Your Cosmic Context

"Your Cosmic Context" is a phenomenally informative book. It contains the clearest descriptions of physical process that you can find, helping anyone understand everything from the expansion of the universe to gravity. It also has helpful, and sometimes funny, charts and pictures that help describe everything, and also a fun little crossword at the end of every chapter to review key terms. The quantitative side of the book is also easy to digest; with every equation described in-depth in a way that anyone can understand. But what really sets "Your Cosmic Context" above and beyond all others is that it gives significance to the individual, and really shows you where you fit in to the universe in a way no other book has done. I am a high school student, and an avid amateur astronomer and I would recommend this book to anyone, regardless of age, who is interested in the world around them.
