I have been an avid fan of Kristine Mason for a very long time. I love that she is expanding her herizons and venturing to another side of her writing abilities(I have no doubt that anything she writes will be amazing!!!). This novella is short but sweet(I never want her books to end!). I fell in love with Wade and Ali and though this book has its twists and turns, there is no evil villain waiting around the corner. However . . . there are plenty of surprises and some pretty steamy, hot sex scenes!!!! Looking forward to more of this story Kristine! HINT HINT!!! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, thanks for letting me do this!

I have been a long time fan of Kristine, this is the first romance that I have read and like all the others it DID NOT disappoint!!!! Wade and Ali make you feel like they are "real" with the situations they go through during their relationship makes you feel that you can relate. Kristine may have left out the kidnapper or murderer BUT she still gives you twists and surprises and the "LOVE" scenes are HOT!!!!!!!! Yet another awesome read Kristine!!! FUN AND SEXY

This was a fun and sexy read. Both Wade and Ali were very likable characters, each with vulnerabilities to overcome. I loved seeing them work their way through the insecurities and find their HEA. I found the premise was very believable and that the character flaws were relatable. And the sexy time was RED HOT.
Even though this was a novella sized read, the characters were nicely developed and the story played out at a great pace. It did not feel rushed as some novellas do. All in all, a great read.

Mani's many facets of his cinematic mind, his choices, execution and thought process behind his character's decisions! Pure joy!

I am a proud byproduct of Maniratnam era of cinema. In a country of compliance, his characters were truly rebellious against the existing norms without the over dramatic heroism. The sense of common man realism combined with their innate rebellion against the societal norms and traditions has created our generation(ones who grew up in 80's and 90's) who is now paving the way for the next one. The format of this book was easy to digest and Mani does seem to be a master of justification about his characters decisions. It helps the true fan of cinema to watch his movies with fresh perspectives. While his editing decisions worked perfectly during the much-restricted, per-liberalized India, they seem to be way off the mark in his recent movies. If at all there is a Director whose movies need a Director's cut, it is Maniratnam. I think there needs to be a simple, uncomplicated, clean arch stories like Alaipaayuthe, Anjali, Mouna Raagam for the masses and a special director's cut for movies like Yuva(Why,why,why would Lallan not return back?) and Raavanan(so badly wish those ten characters were talking to him,making it easy for the viewer to understand his eccentricities). This book is a great journey into Mani's thinking, execution and choices he makes on his movies. A must for any movie fan to understand one of the world's greatest directors from India!

Excellent Book

An excellent book providing insights into the Mani Ratnam way of making movies. Baradwaj Rangan manages to ask the right questions most of the times. At times Mani Ratnam seems to dead bat criticism and defends creative decisions, mostly when Rangan questions whether the quality of characters mirror reality. The best parts of the book are when Mani Ratnam takes the conversation forward when describing how some portions of his movies are derived from his own experiences, like the daughter's signing by the bedside in Guru, and what lead to Bombay and the struggles he faced to release the film. Slightly disappointed that the book does not have a chapter on Kadal as promised in the cover, but can not complain.

Awesome book! For people who are ardent Mani Sir's fans this book helps to know the "grammar" of his films better. Some good insights towards what he strives to achieve through his films. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The conversational format gives an authentic feel that you're listening to Mani Sir himself and Rangan delivers what he promises!

Groundbreaking work on attachment.

This is one of my favorite books on understanding the struggle and challenge of addiction. Behaviors will start to make sense and solutions will begin to be revealed. This book is recommended to all therapists working in the field of addictions and anyone who craves a deeper understanding of what makes people tick. R. Flores does a great job of reviewing and expelling attachment theory

Flores does a great job of reviewing and expelling attachment theory. It is obvious that his work is in the chemical dependency field and should be mandatory ready for those in addictions, especially those not familiar with attachment theory.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole book, but what I have read has been excellent. The book has really helped me to understand addiction, and makes total sense. The only thing is you need to have a dictionary with you while you read it.

In an author's note at the end of On Beauty, Zadie Smith writes: "My largest structural debt should be obvious to any E.M. Forster fan; suffice it to say he gave me a classy old frame, which I covered with new material as best I could." If it is true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Forster, perched on a cloud somewhere, should be all puffed up with pride. His disciple has taken Howards End, that marvelous tale of class difference, and upped the ante by adding race, politics, and gender. The end result is a story for the 21st century, told with a perfect ear for everything: gangsta street talk; academic posturing, both British and American; down-home black Floridian straight talk; and sassy, profane kids, both black and white.

Howard Belsey is a middle-class white liberal Englishman teaching abroad at Wellington, a thinly disguised version of one of the Ivies. He is a Rembrandt scholar who can't finish his book and a recent adulterer whose marriage is now on the slippery slope to disaster. His wife, Kiki, a black Floridian, is a warm, generous, competent wife, mother, and medical worker. Their children are Jerome, disgusted by his father's behavior, Zora, Wellington sophomore firebrand feminist and Levi, eager to be taken for a "homey," complete with baggy pants, hoodies and the ever-present iPod. This family has no secrets--at least not for long. They talk about everything, appropriate to the occasion or not. And, there is plenty to talk about.

The other half of the story is that of the Kipps family: Monty, stiff, wealthy ultra-conservative vocal Christian and Rembrandt scholar, whose book has been published. His wife Carlene is always slightly out of focus, and that's the way she wants it. She wafts over all proceedings, never really connecting with anyone. That seems to be endemic in the Kipps household. Son Michael is a bit of a Monty clone and daughter Victoria is not at all what Daddy thinks she is. Indeed, Forster's advice, "Only connect," is lost on this group.

The two academics have long been rivals, detesting each other's politics and disagreeing about Rembrandt. They are thrown into further conflict when Jerome leaves Wellington to get away from the discovery of his father's affair, lands on the Kipps' doorstep, falls for Victoria and mistakes what he has going with her for love. Howard makes it worse by trying to fix it. Then, Kipps is granted a visiting professorship at Wellington and the whole family arrives in Massachusetts.

From this raw material, Smith has fashioned a superb book, her best to date. She has interwoven class, race, and gender and taken everyone prisoner. Her even-handed renditions of liberal and/or conservative mouthings are insightful, often hilarious, and damning to all. She has a great time exposing everyone's clay feet. Meanwhile, Howard and Kiki must deal with Howard's extramarital affair, as their other son, Levi, moves from religion to politics. Everyone theorizes about art, and everyone searches for connections, sexual and otherwise. A very simple but very funny joke;that Howard, a Rembrandt scholar, hates Rembrandt;allows Smith to discourse majestically on some of the master's finest paintings. The articulate portrait of daughter Zora depicts the struggle to incorporate intellectual values into action. The elaborate Forster homage, as well as a too-neat alignment between characters, concerns and foils, threaten Smith's insightful probing of what makes life complicated (and beautiful), but those insights eventually add up. "There is such a shelter in each other," Carlene tells Kiki; it's a take on Forster's "Only Connect;," but one that finds new substance here.

Most excellent!

She is in my top 3 authors list (also Ben Fountain and ??) for this century. The situations are always original. Her development of characters is so good; there is a lot of humor in how they act and interact. She is very perceptive with respect to a wide range of types of person. A little deep for the average bestseller reader, judging by some of the reviews.

Wanted to give 4.5 stars, but not possible

I quickly fell in love with the characters in this book. They were multifaceted, likable people, but not perfect (like real humans). The situations seemed real. I would defintely read another book about Kiki and her kids.
I think the author may be confused about what states in the U.S. are part of the Deep South (versus Southern), but that was very easy to overlook.

Gripping characterization

I read a dozen books of literary fiction last summer, and this is the one that sticks with me. The characters are original and memorable but also believable. Smith spins a tale I had never heard before, just surprising enough to still be realistic. At no point was I bored. Reading On Beauty was one of those treats where you actually wake up thinking about the story and hoping you can spend time in that world before you have to get back to yours. No serial killers here, nor detectives, just a family trying to stick together while time and human nature is pulling them apart--the way it tends to do.
