I can't believe I did that! What was I thinking? We've all got one: an inner brat that compels us to grab one more cookie or throw a hissy fit over a minor irritation. This inner brat can wreak havoc at work, in relationships, and with our self-esteem. With humor and kindness, Taming Your Inner Brat gives you specific strategies to bring your attitudes and bratty behaviors under control. You can learn to deal with any situation in a productive, adult manner. By teaching you how to recognize your inner brat, psychologist Pauline Wallin, Ph.D. helps you bring problems into manageable perspective and make changes that last . . . Which leaves just one question, answered in this new edition: 'Now that I've tamed my own inner brat, what do I do about people who haven't tamed theirs'

Responding to the familiar observation that what you don't know can and will hurt you, American Productivity and Quality Center leaders Carla O'Dell and C. Jackson Grayson Jr. have countered with a contention that the "hidden reservoirs of intelligence that exist in almost every organization" can, with work, be efficiently tapped "to create customer value, operational excellence, and product innovation--all the while increasing profits and effectiveness." If Only We Knew What We Know is their detailed examination of the resultant groundbreaking but common-sense methodology they have dubbed "knowledge management," along with their analysis of several companies such as Amoco, Arthur Andersen, Buckman Laboratories, and Xerox that are successfully employing it today. By studying the execution and evolution of this practice in over 70 companies involved with their non-profit management organization, the two have observed how top practitioners are turning internal information that's already selectively available into dynamic improvements that are apparent throughout the companies. They describe how to implement knowledge management in your own firm and describe the "enabling context" (including infrastructure, culture, technology, and measurement) that help or hinder the process. --Howard Rothman

From Library Journal
The authors, heads of the American Productivity and Quality Center, focus on the notion of internal best practices, discussing the barriers to internal knowledge transfer and offering detailed recommendations for overcoming these barriers. Of particular value is their Knowledge Management Assessment Tool (KMAT), a device to help organizations assess their strengths and weaknesses in managing internal knowledge. A good starting point for those new to KM.

From Booklist
O'Dell and Grayson are, respectively, the president and the founder and chairman of the American Productivity and Quality Center, a 300-member, nonprofit organization in Houston, Texas. In 1992, when the Center's International Benchmarking Clearinghouse began to search for best practices among its members, it discovered to its surprise that many of its members had found numerous examples of "unknown and unshared knowledge" in their very own organizations. This finding led to research on why knowledge and practices failed to transfer even in organizations that were noted for innovation. The authors report on this research and offer recommendations for taking advantage of internal best practices. They identify three barriers to internal knowledge transfer, explain which three value propositions are best-suited for harnessing internal knowledge, and describe the four "enablers" that facilitate transfer. They also provide case studies and offer a detailed methodology for "making best-practice transfer and knowledge sharing a mainstay of your company." David Rouse

The Invisibility of the Obvious
By Robert Morris
One of the exercises I conduct for consulting clients is quite simple but extraordinarily valuable. Here's how it works. I ask to meet with 5-10 key executives, with or without the CEO included. Each of those present, in rotation around the table, says to each of the others (one at a time): "Here is what you and your people could do to make my life much easier." The exercise continues until each executive has spoken directly to every other person. All this takes about 60-90 minutes. Invariably the response is, "I had no idea. No problem. We'll be glad to do it. Why didn't you mention this before?" Everyone is involved, either asking for specific assistance from everyone else, or, learning how she or he could provide it.
I mention this basic exercise to suggest what probably motivated O'Dell and Grayson to write this book. They focus on what they call "beds of knowledge" which are "hidden resources of intelligence that exist in almost every organization, relatively untapped and unmined." They suggest all manner of effective strategies to "tap into "this hidden asset, capturing it, organizing it, transferring it, and using it to create customer value, operational excellence, and product innovation -- all the while increasing profits and effectiveness."
Almost all organizations claim that their "most valuable assets walk out the door at the end of each business day." That is correct. Almost all intellectual "capital" is stored between two ears and much (too much) of it is, for whatever reasons, inaccessible to others except in "small change." O'Dell and Grayson organize their material as follows:
Part One: A Framework for Internal Knowledge Transfer
Part Two: The Three Value Propositions [ie Customer Intimacy, Product-to-Product Excellence, and Achieving Operational Excellence]
NOTE: Part Two will be even more valuable when read in combination with Treacy & Wiersema's The Discipline of Market Leaders.
Part Three: The Four Enablers of Transfer
Part Four: Reports From the Front Lines: Pioneer Case Studies
Part Five: The Four Phase Process: Or, "What I Do on Monday Morning"
In the Conclusion, the authors assert that "there is no conclusion to managing knowledge and transferring best practices. It is a race without a finishing line." They are right, now and especially in years to come. In the concluding chapter, the authors share ten "Enduring Principles" which should inform and direct the formulation of any plan by which to manage knowledge and transfer best practices. During implementation of the plan, everyone involved must be willing and able to make whatever adjustments may be necessary. Perhaps the authors would agree with me that an 11th "enduring principle" affirms that change is the only constant. Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Senge's The Fifth Discipline and The Dance of Change as well as Isaac's Dialogue.
With regard to the exercise briefly explained in the first paragraph, one of its many value-added benefits occurs following the completion of the exercise when most (if not) of the participants begin to offer unsolicited suggestions as to how they can do even more to assist their associates. Four of the most powerful words in any organization are "I need your help." But first you have to ask for it.

The FIRST book to put in your knowledge practices library
By A Customer
"Where should our business unit start in our goal to use knowledge to create greater value?" I am often asked this question as a principal Consultant to the Corporate University of a Fortune 100 Company . The answer now is easy - and tangible - I hand them a copy of this book. O'Dell and Grayson have created a knowledge transfer book that is well researched, easy to read, practical and insightful. From the very first chapter where they report the key insight - that knowledge is both tacit and explicit - the book is a gold mine of information. Their clear explanations of what is and is not working in successful "knowledge transfer" companies makes the book immediately useful. Plain language descriptions of the six barriers that hinder transfer of know-how will strike a chord with all levels in the organisation. Showing people paragraphs like "We're different" and "Sorry - I'm too busy" generates an instant interest. The book presents lessons learned in the important aspects of people (culture), processes, technology and infrastructure. Pearls of wisdom like why a company should "understand first, measure second" are spread throughout the book. The constant references to other sources of information and to practices at well known companies make the book itself a best practice in explicit knowledge sharing. And O'Dell and Grayson have include one section that many of the best sellers do not - "Where to start Monday morning". I would like to have seen more on "tacit" knowledge sharing. Perhaps the book will inspire someone to build on a great foundation and publish something practical on that.

"A Model for Best Practice Transfer"
By Turgay BUGDACIGIL
"This is not the first book about managing of transferring knowledge and it is certainly not the last book about knowledge management (KM). There are many excellent books about knowledge management..., but we think our book is unique. Here's why: First,...It's a book about how to improve the performance of your organization...Second, this book is not based on theories or speculation. It is anchored in successes, mistakes, and real-life case studies. It is not a spiritual guide or a technology manual. The experiences, thoughts, insights, and conclusions herein are based on surveys, site visits, and design work with over seventy organizations of all shapes ans sizes...This book is primarily about internal transfer of best practices in organizations. That is, the transfer of best practices from one part of an organization to another part-or parts-in order to increase profitability or effectiveness...Finally, it is also a book about the transfer of knowledge, specifically, the effective management of knowledge inside an organization...This book will focus largely on 'internal benchmarking'-looking inside your own organization-and transferring best practices" (from the Preface).
In this context, Carla O'Dell and C.Jackson Grayson,Jr., in Chapter 4, write that "the internal transfer of knowledge is about finding out what you know, and using it to improve performance. It is about leveraging the value of knowledge you've already got. Whereas different companies adopt different approaches to finding and sharing internal know-how, they all seem to pursue one single strategy with great vigor: the transfer of internal best pactices", and then lay out a model that will guide the rest of the book. It has three major components:
1. The three value propositions- Companies must transfer knowledge and best practices to create value, and value is created by translating knowledge into action. But exactly what 'value' are we talking about? Thus, the first step toward profitable management of your company's knowledge asset is choosing the right value proposition.
* Customer intimacy- Increase revenue, reduce cost of selling, and increase customer satisfaction and retention.
* Product-to-market excellence- By reducing time-to-market, and designing and commercializing new products more quickly and successfully, we will increase revenue, retain market lead, and grow our profit margins.
* Operational excellence- Boost revenue by reducing the cost of production and increasing productivity, and raise performance to new highs.
2. The four enablers- The second step is creating the most supportive environment for transfer, by designing and aligning the enablers of transfer: culture, technology, infrastructure, and measurement.
3. The four-phase change process- The third step is change process would likely follow the following four phases: plan, design, implement, and scale-up.
Finally, they write that "Sure, companies have embarked on change efforts before. This one is diffrent. It's different because the improvement work is anchored in real-life practical knowledge-the know-how and intelligence other people within your own company have developed and used. It has worked for others. It can work for you. The key for making this work is threefold:
1. You've got to have a clearly defined purpose: the value proposition.
2. You've got to understand and leverage various organizational enablers, from infrastructure to technology, from measurement to culture.
3. You've got to have an organized way for achieving it: the four-phase process.
The reminder of this book is about these three components and the companies that illustrate their effective use."
Highly recommended.

Body Counts: A Memoir of Politics, Sex, AIDS, and Survival, by Sean Strub

Sean Strub, founder of the groundbreaking POZ magazine, producer of the hit play “The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me,” and the first openly HIV-positive candidate for US Congress, charts his remarkable life—a story of politics and AIDS and a powerful testament to loss, hope, and survival.

Sean Strub, founder of the groundbreaking POZ magazine, producer of the hit play The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me, and the first openly HIV-positive candidate for U.S. Congress, charts his remarkable life—a story of politics and AIDS and a powerful testament to loss, hope, and survival.

As a politics-obsessed Georgetown freshman, Sean Strub arrived in Washington, D.C., from Iowa in 1976, with a plum part-time job running a Senate elevator in the U.S. Capitol. He also harbored a terrifying secret: his attraction to men. As Strub explored the capital’s political and social circles, he discovered a parallel world where powerful men lived double lives shrouded in shame.

When the AIDS epidemic hit in the early 1980s, Strub was living in New York and soon found himself attending “more funerals than birthday parties.” Scared and angry, he turned to radical activism to combat discrimination and demand research. Strub takes readers through his own diagnosis and inside ACT UP, the activist organization that transformed a stigmatized cause into one of the defining political movements of our time.

From the New York of Studio 54 and Andy Warhol’s Factory to the intersection of politics and burgeoning LGBT and AIDS movements, Strub’s story crackles with history. He recounts his role in shocking AIDS demonstrations at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the home of U.S. Senator Jesse Helms. Body Counts is a vivid portrait of a tumultuous era, with an astonishing cast of characters, including Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Keith Haring, Bill Clinton, and Yoko Ono.

By the time a new class of drugs transformed the epidemic in 1996, Strub was emaciated and covered with Kaposi’s sarcoma lesions, the scarlet letter of AIDS. He was among the fortunate who returned, Lazaruslike, from the brink of death.

Strub has written a vital, inspiring memoir, unprecedented in scope, about this deeply important period of American history.

Amazon Guest Review of Body Counts

By John Berendt author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

When the anti-viral drug AZT was approved for use against HIV/AIDS back in 1987, Sean Strub's doctor urged him to take it. Strub was HIV-positive, and early tests of the new drug had produced dramatic results. He followed his doctor's advice, but reluctantly. After two weeks of agonizing over the pros and cons, he stopped taking AZT. It was a gutsy move, since no other drug was on the horizon, but it turned out the best thing he could have done: AZT's benefits proved to be short-term, and the drug itself was toxic at the dosages prescribed. "[H]ad I continued to take it," Strub writes in Body Counts, his engrossing and immensely readable memoir, "I very likely would have died, as thousands of others did."

A small library of books by people with AIDS has sprung up in the thirty years since the start of the epidemic. They constitute a remarkable sub-genre of historic importance, and Body Counts shares qualities common to the best of them (Paul Monette's Borrowed Time, Randy Shilts's And the Band Played On, David B. Feinberg's Queer and Loathing, and Shawn Decker's My Pet Virus). Strub writes from the perspective of an activist-insider. He sheds new light on the nature of the disease, the struggle against it, and the politics that pervade every aspect of what has come to be known as AIDS Inc.

At an early age, as one of six children in a conservative, church-going Iowa family, Strub demonstrated an entrepreneurial flair and an obsession with politics. He sold subscriptions door-to-door and hawked soda and popcorn at University of Iowa football games. In high school he was a page in the Iowa legislature. In college he ran the "Senators Only" elevator in the U.S. Capitol and expected that this would put him on a "political fast track." Life took unexpected turns, however, and by the time he entered politics in 1990, it was as the first openly HIV-positive candidate for Congress.

When he became sick with AIDS, Strub focused his energies as an activist and entrepreneur on AIDS itself. In 1994--just as purple lesions of Kaposi sarcoma began to show on his face--he drew up plans to launch POZ, a consumer magazine for people with HIV. POZ would serve as a source of up-to-date medical, scientific, legal and financial information about the epidemic. It would create a sense of community for its readers by featuring stories about people just like them who were managing to live fruitful lives while surviving with HIV.

Strub raised most of the money for POZ from a company with the ghoulish specialty of buying life-insurance policies from terminally ill people who were near death. He cashed in his policy for $450,000, sold his country house, maxed out his credit cards, withdrew his savings, and put all of it into the successful startup of POZ.

Through POZ, Strub gained (and shared) sobering insights into Big Pharma, which was both his biggest source of advertising revenue and at the same time the most frequent subject of investigative reports in POZ. He avoided conflicts of interest by publishing the uncensored truth about the strengths and weaknesses of every drug targeted at AIDS. More than one drug company pulled its advertising in anger over a negative mention, nearly sinking the magazine while ironically confirming its credibility.

As Body Counts describes in memorable detail, Strub frequently backed up the magazine's stand on issues with acts of boots-on-the-ground civil disobedience. One such episode, to publicize the campaign for safer-sex education, involved placing a giant condom over the suburban home of Senator Jesse Helms, the Senate's most implacable homophobe and foe of AIDS funding. Another far less light-hearted action took place at St. Patrick's Cathedral in protest over the church's deceptive and potentially harmful "Condoms Don't Work" campaign.

Two years after the launch of POZ, the introduction of combination therapy drastically reduced the death rate from AIDS so that when the twentieth anniversary of POZ occurred in 2014, both Strub and the magazine were around to celebrate it.

A Lambda Literary Award Finalist

“Inspiring... A vital history of ordinary people rising up and demonstrating the potential inherent in this extraordinary country... Although at times it is agonizing to remember and relive our past, Sean’s articulate, and humane memoir transforms this pain into a hope for a better future. This is the most personally powerful and authentic portrayal of our collective history that I have read since Paul Monette's On Borrowed Time." (Judith Light)

“What a life! From the Senate elevator to Studio 54 to Andy Warhol and Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal and John Lennon to the famous demonstration inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral--who is this guy, Forest Gump? This is the compelling life and near-death story of Sean Strub, of thousands lost to HIV-AIDS, and thousands more living with it whom his activism helped save. Wow.” (Andrew Tobias, author of The Best Little Boy in the World)

"Read Body Counts by Sean Strub and share one American's story of growing up with an instinct for justice, then finding oneself in an epidemic whose tragedy is multiplied by bias. As a man who survived sexual abuse, rape and an HIV diagnosis, Strub embodies the shared interest of women and men who fight for human rights, and against any government or person intruding on our bodies. By taking us with him on his journey from a conservative family in Iowa to the heart of a global movement for human rights, Sean Strub gives us ideas, strength and heart in our own journey." (Gloria Steinem)

"Body Counts is an absorbing read. It not only vividly recounts the personal odyssey of one man's struggle with AIDS, but places it--with remarkable objectivity--within the larger story of those years. Strub is a dispassionate, reliable guide whose directness and honesty create considerable impact. Anyone would profit from reading this book." (Martin Duberman, author of Stonewall and Professor of History Emeritus at the Graduate School of the City University of New York)

“Searingly honest about himself and others, Strub shows how the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s brought out the best and the worst in people. His heroes are the ordinary men and women who fought to save lives. His villains – and deservedly so – are the cowardly public officials, from Reagan through Clinton, whose opportunism proved deadly to others. This take-no-prisoners memoir has the quality of a suspenseful page-turner, and will keep you reading until the final sentence.” (John D'Emilio, author of Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America)

“From early struggles against AIDS to later collective acting up, Sean Strub's lively, gossipy memoir is also deeply moving history.” (Jonathan Ned Katz, author Gay American History)

“Sean Strub has written more than just a memoir. Body Counts pulls back the curtain on a hidden half-century of American history, from closeted Washington politicos of the 1970s and 1980s to his interactions with a parade of American icons; Tennessee Williams, Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Gore Vidal all make cameos. AIDS looms large, but the story never feels like a tragedy. It is the tale of a life lived in high-resolution, high-intensity, saturated technicolor.” (Ari Shapiro, NPR White House Correspondent)

“Sean Strub has been a columnist, editor, publisher, theatrical producer, congressional candidate, conservationist, hotelier, and for most of that time an outspoken advocate in the fight against AIDS as well. His Body Counts is a stunning memoir--candid (at times startlingly so), courageous and humane. Much like the author himself.” (John Berendt, New York Times-bestselling author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and The City of Falling Angels)

“On June 5, 1981, the day the AIDS epidemic was first recognized by the Centers for Disease Control, Sean Strub was with my close friend, gay activist Vito Russo, in Denver, Colorado. Body Counts is a powerful account of the epidemic's early years and the subsequent three decades. It encompasses the tragedy of lives lost young, as we lost Vito, as well as the triumph of empowerment, activism and survival. Body Counts is a page-turner with moving insight and fresh analysis told in a compelling and highly personal style.” (Lily Tomlin)

“Strub paints a striking picture…. A valuable document that gives an insider’s view into AIDS activism and declares that compassion can mean just as much as cure.” (Kirkus)

“Elegantly written, movingand powerful, this book from one of the most important advocates for peoplewith HIV/AIDS is eye-opening. In these times when the continuing need forservices for populations that suffer the most seems almost lost frompublic sight this is an important reminder.” (Mary Frances Berry, Geraldine Segal professor of American Social Thought, University of Pennsylvania and Past Chair United States Commission on Civil Rights.)

"Sean Strub’s Body Counts is an important document for several reasons. His direct and honest prose relates a familiar story of growing self-awareness, coming of age and coming out in afresh and compelling manner. The big surprise comes when one recognizes how dramatic the machinations of drug trials, power politics and the building of a grass roots movement can be.” (Bill T. Jones)

"A brilliantly told story of a life at the center of the historical period defined by the AIDS epidemic. Moments of struggle are illuminated by a tale of despair and death, gay self-transformation, love, hope, and modest bravery. More than a survivor'stale, a gripping story of a movement that changed the soul of our world." (Kathy Boudin, Assistant Professor, Columbia University School of Social Work)

“Body Counts--so smart and affecting, idealistic and clear-eyed--chronicles Strub's own personal experience with HIV,and, at the same time, explores how culture shapes us and how we can shape itin turn. Strub's memoir, like Strub himself, is an inspiration.” (Richard McCann, author of Mother of Sorrows)

A compelling page-turner... [Sean] provides fresh insights into the foundations of today's LGBT movement, an inside personal history of the AIDS epidemic and an eye-opening and horrifying depiction of the growing trend of HIV criminalization. To understand today's HIV epidemic, read Body Counts. (Rory Kennedy, filmmaker)

"This is a very particular and personal history, but it’s also our history… A wonderful storyteller, Strub does such a great job of showing how life also went on amidst so much death. I very much admire his writing – how clean and powerful it is." (Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club)

“Sean Strub—one of the real heroes of the long fight against AIDS—gives us a shatteringly honest and moving account…. [He] challenges conventional wisdoms and speaks truth to power.” (Doug Ireland, veteran political journalist)

"Sean Strub .... [is] one of the AIDS movement’s most respected leaders... A critical historical voice.... Absorbing... Accessible not only to those intimate with the devastation wrought by HIV/AIDS but to those who viewed it from a distance or in retrospect." (Earl Pike The Cleveland Plain Dealer)

“Body Counts is a well-written and welcome addition to the histories of the queer and AIDS movements. It also details the considerable contributions Strub has made to those movements over the past 30 years." (Gay City News)

"Strub offers an eyewitness account from the inside of the epidemic.... This book is a valuable addition to the American AIDS archive." (Next Magazine)

“In his new book, Body Counts, Strub proves to be a rare breed of narrator, one who weaves a rich tale that both predates the early crisis—he arrived in Washington, D.C., in 1976, still swooning over Carter’s liberal optimism even as gay politicos clutched tightly at their closeted power—and managed to survive its darkest days.” (Out)

“Body Counts is a well-written and welcome addition to the histories of the queer and AIDS movements. It also details the considerable contributions Strub has made to those movements over the past 30 years.” (Gay City News)

“[A] deeply moving, stunningly honest memoir, Strub recounts a story both distinctly his own and shared by many men in his generation.” (Boston Globe)

“[Body Counts] depicts incredible acts of courage by Strub and his constellation of collaborators. Against thick walls of institutional homophobia and shrieking AIDS hysteria, they forged battles that shaped seminal moments in AIDS history… Strub's close up portrayals of events and people are an insider's telescope…. Gripping…. Strub remains on the cutting edge of activism.” (Windy City Times)

“This captivating new book from the POZ magazine founder grabs your attention with stories of Strub’s college years in D.C., of standing on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic and all the sex, heartache and growth along the way. And it’s a powerful read … beautifully told.… A vivid look at how far our community has come and the work that is still to be done.” (Instinct Magazine)

"Body Counts, Sean Strub's moving, multi-decade memoir of one gay man's life, is not only a time capsule of the LGBT movement but also an examination of how far the United States has come in a very brief time to a new understanding of difference and acceptance…it forcefully reminds us of the impact an individual can make in changing the world around him.” (The San Francisco Chronicle)

"Body Counts relates not just the dramatic life story of one of America’s leading AIDS activists and founder of the magazine Poz, but also, for a younger generation who may not know, how he and others fought to increase public awareness and counter bigotry in the much darker 1980s and 90s.” (Tim Teeman The Daily Beast)

"[Body Counts] chronicles a rage-inducing chapter in recent political history." (June Thomas Slate.com on NY1 News)

"A beautiful book…brings back the 80s and 90s and the danger of AIDS, the uncertainties of AIDS." (Bill Goldstein WNBC-TV’s Weekend Today in New York)

"Fascinating… an insider’s view on the struggles of gay men during the early years of the AIDS epidemic." (Lambda Literary Review)

“A fascinating new memoir.” (Bay Area Reporter)

"An important new memoir." (MetroWeekly)

“A page-turner…. Body Counts has the suspense and horror of Paul Monette’s memoir Borrowed Time and the drama of Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart…. Strub’s experience touches every issue of the plague years…. What a lot of action — and life — there is in this gripping book.” (Andrew Holleran Washington Post)

"A story of resilience and righteous indignation, touched with wit." (Elizabeth Taylor Chicago Tribune)

“Disarmingly honest…. The story of a humble, practical soldier, an unlikely political agitator who came of age amid a community under siege.” (New York Times Book Review)

Required Reading
By Foster Corbin
Sean Strub's BODY COUNTS should be required reading for anyone interested in the AIDS epidemic in this country. It is one of those books that is difficult to put down. As I read it, I was reminded how much Mr. Strub's story mirrors that of all of us who were alive and young in large cities in that awful time in the 1980`s and 90`s until the drug cocktail became available in 1996 when we literally saw our friends come back from deathbeds in a matter of weeks. We first read of gay men dying of a strange affliction in the NEW YORK NATIVE in 1981, then it was called gay cancer, then something called GRID and finally AIDS. And Larry Kramer's front page article in the NEW YORK NATIVE, "1,112 and Counting," in 1983 sent shock waves into the gay community across this country. We found out just how bad homophobia and fear really were when funeral homes refused to accept our dead. We would hear in a casual conversation with friends that someone whom we had not seen in a few months had died. Families had gay sons whose obits in their home town newspaper listed the cause of death as cancer. And like the author, I remember the first person I ever knew who had AIDS. Mr. Strub's memoir brings it all back home.

We would expect the man who founded the magazine POZ to write an honest-take-no-prisoners account of what happened, and he does. All the usual villains are here. Here are some of them: when Ronald Reagan spoke the word "AIDS" for the first time in 1987, way into his second term as President, twenty-one thousand Americans had already died of it. Anthony Fauci at the NIH was uncooperative in 1987 in writing guidelines recommending the inexpensive drug Bactrim to prevent PCP in PWA's even though infectious disease specialists had known as early as 1977 of its effectiveness. When the guidelines were finally issued in 1989, 30,534 people in the U. S. had died of PCP, and approximately 16,929 of the deaths had occurred between the time Fauci was first approached and the date the guidelines were issued. And Bill Clinton gets tarred and feathered too. Mr. Strub feels betrayed by him, someone whose candidacy for President he and so many others had supported, hoping for great things from him. What we got was "Don't Ask; Don't Tell," the Defense of Marriage Act that Clinton now admits was unconstitutional and his refusal to lift the ban on the use of federal money to fund needle-exchange programs to reduce HIV transmission. In Strub's words: "Like many other people with HIV, I felt betrayed by Clinton because I'd believed him during his campaign when he told my ACT UP colleague Bob Rafsky, 'I feel your pain.'" (Mr. Strub also outs Donna Shalala as a closet lesbian.) And he recounts in great delightful detail when he and six others put a gigantic condom on Senator Jesse Helms' house in Arlington, Virginia. Helms he describes as the man in public life who was the greatest enemy of people with AIDS. Finally the author begins his narrative with the protest in December, 1989 at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York when ACT UP protesters interrupt John Cardinal O'Connor's Mass because of his position of safe sex and reproductive rights. When Mr. Strub goes to the altar ostensibly to take communion, the priest sees the pink triangle and Silence=Death logo on his T-shirt under his coat. Mr. Strub begins: "'May the Lord bless the man I love, who died a year ago this week.'" (page 3) (From that moment on, I knew that Mr. Strub had my heart.)

In sharp contrast are the Elizabeth Taylors and Matilde Krims of the world, the young people in ACT UP, as well as the multitudes of gay men and lesbians who cared for the sick and dying. Mr. Strub reminds us that AIDS brought gay men and lesbians together as never before. "AIDS helped us cement the concept of a chosen family of friends as the foundation upon which we built a massive and heroic effort to tend to our sick and dying." He closes this book of 400 pages that seems much shorter in a beautiful passage that rises to the level of poetry. He says that even though he has often been furious with the Catholic Church, the church he was brought up in, that he accepts its lesson that life's meaning is found in contemplation, penance and service. In his own words: "Sometimes that service is simply a matter of being present with no other action necessary. Joe Sonnabend [a physician in the thick of treating people with AIDS from the beginning of the epidemic] once let me look at a box of letters and cards he received over the years from the surviving partners and parents of patients of his who had died. . . They all thank Joe for his care and kindness, but I was struck by how many simply thanked him for `being there' for the person they loved. When I see someone very ill or hospitalized and feel helpless, not knowing what I can do to help alleviate their pain, I remember those cards and remind myself that even when all I can do is `be there,' that is enough."

There is so much more than I cover in this little review: Mr. Strub's early life in Iowa, his political life in D. C., his producing of the play THE NIGHT LARRY KRAMER KISSED ME, the loves of his life, his many friends in the gay and AIDS community. This is a fantastic book.

This may be the most honest, forthright memoir you'll ever read
By Jacqueline Damian
Sean Strub has written a remarkable book that combines personal memoir with a riveting social history of the HIV/AIDS crisis. An activist, entrepreneur and the founder of POZ magazine (aimed at HIV-positive people), Strub tells the story through the events of his own life, forthrightly describing early sexual abuse and the emotional pain of being closeted, to his coming out as a gay man and, later, his own diagnosis with HIV and his close brush with death. Fortunately, he came back from the brink with the help of some of the new drug "cocktails" that became available in the 1990s. Strub is healthy now and still involved in multiple activities, from historic renovations in Milford, PA, to launching the Sero Project, an attempt to decriminalize individuals' HIV status.

I have seldom read a memoir as open and revealing in terms of personal details as this one. But I guess no less should be expected from the publisher who used to run his own blood counts and other details of his struggle with AIDS and Kaposi's sarcoma in his monthly column in POZ. I came away from this book with a deeper, richer understanding of the inner life of gay men and their response to the disease, as well as a feeling of love and appreciation for the author, for sharing so much of himself and his experience in these pages. Strub's story helps me better understand other gay men I've known, including someone close to me who died of AIDS in 1990.

There's plenty of People magazine tidbits along the way, since Strub seems to have a Zelig-like knack for being on the scene -- whatever that scene might be. He got to know Tennessee Williams and Gore Vidal, and met Bill Clinton, Robert Kennedy Jr. and many other political bigwigs (Strub was the first openly gay man to run for Congress, in 1990). Walking home from a dinner party in 1980, he happened upon the scene of John Lennon's murder, and watched as the police lifted the former Beatle into the back of a cruiser because they didn't want to wait for an ambulance. Later, he met and became friendly with Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, who contributed to AIDS charities.

Warning for straight people: There's the occasional graphic description of gay sexual practices and how they may (or may not; there's debate) have contributed to the AIDS epidemic. As I said in the title, this may be the most honest, forthright memoir you will ever read.

AN EXCELLENT AND PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF A VERY HORRIBLE TIME
By Magyar
I am still in the midst of reading this book, but I feel I have to post something about it. I picked it up to read as part of a history project I am doing about the AIDS epidemic and post-AIDS LGBTQ politics, thinking that it would be a typical account of the period (e.g. either high drama, maudlin, pompously literary/theoretical or conversely soap boxy, breezy and superficial), but instead found an account that honest, simple, direct, broad but detailed and thoroughly engaging, personal and authentic Much of it has to do with the skill and personality of the writer. Strub is able to capture so much of the period (I was active during then but in another part of the country) in many simple details and short descriptions. His account of his two week waiting period for his HIV results resonated deeply. The "normalizing" yet "not normalizing" of the sickness and death of friends which then was often expressed in short unexpected bursts of anger and crying; the disappearance of familiar faces; the noting of a man's very handsome/beautiful face but with a small KS lesion; the cluelessness of "A-Gays;" holding the hand your dead lover's mother...all of this is the kind of nitty-gritty details that other accounts often miss.
What is more remarkable is that, as you read, you realize that Strub was a major player in the politics and post-politics of AIDS. Combining innate business skills and a gut sense of activism, he was an important activist of the period. But his whole perspective is less of a major actor and more of an honest witness. Maybe it is his Iowa upbringing (and dropping out of college and missing the experience of having to write "profound" undergraduate papers), but he writes with a sense of self-modesty which makes this account all the more appealing and authentic.
Strub gives a good overview of the AIDS crisis and its politics (albeit with a New York inflection- but then again he is writing from his own experiences.) But he also gives a more personal sense of what is what like to be gay, aware and alive then. You didn't think much about the future, just hoping that somehow you, and those you knew and loved, would survive. Fortunately Strub survived and is able to write about it.

Introduction to 64 Bit Intel Assembly Language Programming for Linux: Second Edition, by Ray Seyfarth

This is the second edition of this assembly language programming textbook introducing programmers to 64 bit Intel assembly language. The primary addition to the second edition is the discussion of the free integrated development environment, ebe, designed by the author specifically to meet the needs of assembly language programmers. Ebe is a Python program which uses the Tkinter and Pwm widget sets to implement a GUI environment consisting of a source window, a data window, a registers window, a console window, a terminal window and a project window. The source window includes a full-featured text editor with convenient controls for assembling, linking and debugging a program. The project facility allows a program to be built from C source code files and assembly source files. Assembly is performed automatically using the yasm assembler and linking is performed with ld or gcc. Debugging operates by transparently sending commands into the gdb debugger while automatically displaying registers and variables after each debugging step. Additional information about ebe can be found at http://www.rayseyfarth.com.

The book is intended as a first assembly language book for programmers experienced in high level programming in a language like C or C++. The assembly programming is performed using the yasm assembler automatically from the ebe IDE under the Linux operating system. The book primarily teaches how to write assembly code compatible with C programs. The reader will learn to call C functions from assembly language and to call assembly functions from C in addition to writing complete programs in assembly language. The gcc compiler is used internally to compile C programs.

The book starts early emphasizing using ebe to debug programs, along with teaching equivalent commands using gdb. Being able to single-step assembly programs is critical in learning assembly programming. Ebe makes this far easier than using gdb directly.

Highlights of the book include doing input/output programming using the Linux system calls and the C library, implementing data structures in assembly language and high performance assembly language programming.

Early chapters of the book rely on using the debugger to observe program behavior. After a chapter on functions, the user is prepared to use printf and scanf from the C library to perform I/O. The chapter on data structures covers singly linked lists, doubly linked circular lists, hash tables and binary trees. Test programs are presented for all these data structures. There is a chapter on optimization techniques and 3 chapters on specific optimizations. One chapter covers how to efficiently count the 1 bits in an array with the most efficient version using the recently-introduced popcnt instruction. Another chapter covers using SSE instructions to create an efficient implementation of the Sobel filtering algorithm. The final high performance programming chapter discusses computing correlation between data in 2 arrays. There is an AVX implementation which achieves 20.5 GFLOPs on a single core of a Core i7 CPU.

A companion web site, http://www.rayseyfarth.com, has a collection of PDF slides which instructors can use for in-class presentations and source code for sample programs.

Decent introduction in less time
By El Dave
This book is not such a thick tome as many assembly books and allows a person wanting to learn assembly to do so in approximately ten weeks with 5 hours of study per week. I agree with the author that chapter 4 should just be skipped or read casually. Chapter 4 needs a lot more explanation or outside study to really get a handle on this memory topic. However, the rest of the book is good and gives a good introduction to 64 bit Assembly in Linux. Its emphasis is on science/engineering and optimization and not on device drivers or kernel writing.

*** When working through this book, be sure to also have the Intel manual with its alphabetic listing of assembly instructions on the screen also. It will be your main source for moving beyond basic assembly and is a good supplement from the beginning.
[...]

Assembly is so much nicer in 64 bit with all the extra registers, instructions, etc.

I have both the first and second edition. Some have said the ebe figures are hard to read in the 2nd edition, but they are easy to read in the copy I have.

The second addition adds additional exercises and explanation. It is worth getting it instead of the first edition. The hundreds of dollars asking price for the first edition is a ridiculous joke! Don't buy it, just get the second edition.

So far, this is the only book on 64bit Assembly Programming!
By Charles T. Bell
I do like the layout of this book. It has a couple of problems for the IDE it uses.
I would recommend both yasm and gold as the compiler and linker respectively. The author prefers ld even though it is not optimized for 64bit like gold is.
Currently, the author will respond to emails if you have problems or suggestions.
The book itself is well laid out and covers appropriate subjects in order. It is good for the beginner/intermediate as a learning tool and handy for the expert as a reference book for the 64bit commands/registers.

Brilliant introduction to assembly on 64 bit (x86-64)
By manoj awasthi
I am through most of the book and am very happy I added it to my personal library. It is a very useful and effective introduction to assembly language - one which I would want to recommend as a mandatory text in the engineering syllabus. It goes through lot of details which make things quite clear - floating point representation in memory, different segments of the program, implementation of data structures like arrays, linked lists (structures), binary trees, hash tables and has a chapter relating to recent SSE and AVX instructions. Over all very happy on this purchase. So not a reference manual (~ 250 pages) but a book I'd really use and keep coming back.

Comprehensive Civil Engineering Coverage You Can Trust

The Civil Engineering Reference Manual is the most comprehensive textbook for the NCEES Civil PE exam. This book’s time-tested organization and clear explanations start with the basics to help you quickly get up to speed with common civil engineering concepts. Together, the 90 chapters provide an in-depth review of all of the topics, codes, and standards listed in the NCEES Civil PE exam specifications. The extensive index contains thousands of entries, with multiple entries included for each topic, so you’ll find what you’re looking for no matter how you search.

Due to the changes in codes for the 2015 NCEES PE exam, there are some updates to this edition. Though not all of PPI's products reflect the adopted editions of the new design standards, in most cases the principles change very little. While specific procedures, equations, or values may change gradually from one edition of a design or reference standard to the next, PPI’s books continue to provide an appropriate overview of the design concepts presented, and will prepare you for the upcoming exams.

This book features:

  • over 100 appendices containing essential support material
  • over 500 clarifying examples
  • over 550 common civil engineering terms defined in an easy-to-use glossary
  • thousands of equations, figures, and tables
  • industry-standard terminology and nomenclature
  • equal support of U.S. customary and SI units

After you pass your exam, the Civil Engineering Reference Manual will continue to serve as an invaluable reference throughout your civil engineering career.

1. INTRODUCTION
Structural members subjected to axial compressive loads are often called by names identifying their functions. Of these, the best-known are columns, the main vertical compression members in a building frame. Other common compression members include chords in trusses and bracing members in frames.

The selection of a particular shape for use as a compression member depends on the type of structure, the availability, and the connection methods. Load-carrying capacity varies approximately inversely with the slenderness ratio, so stiff members are generally required. Rods, bars, and plates, commonly used as tension members, are too slender to be used as compression members unless they are very short or lightly loaded.

For building columns, W shapes having nominal depths of 14 in or less are commonly used. These sections, being rather square in shape, are more efficient than others for carrying compressive loads. (Deeper sections are more efficient as beams.) Pipe sections are satisfactory for small or medium loads. Pipes are often used as columns in long series of windows, in warehouses, and in basements and garages. In the past, square and rectangular tubing saw limited use, primarily due to the difficulty in making bolted or riveted connections at the ends. Modern welding techniques have essentially eliminated this problem.

Built-up sections are needed in large structures for very heavy loads that cannot be supported by individual rolled shapes. For bracing and compression members in light trusses, single-angle members are suitable. However, equal-leg angles may be more economical than unequal-leg angles because their least radius of gyration values are greater for the same area of steel. For top chord members of bolted roof trusses, a pair of angles (usually unequal legs, with long legs back-to-back to give a better balance between the radius of gyration values about the x-and y-axes) are used with or without gusset plates. In welded roof trusses, where gusset plates are unnecessary, structural tees are used as top chord members.

I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide
By Bb
I gave it three stars because I took the Construction Depth exam, and this reference has very little construction information. I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide. However, this reference was quite useful to me during the morning exam for the non-construction problems.

HUGE reference, and it has way more information than you would need for any PE exam. I do not recommend using this as a study guide (except for the example problems), just a pure reference like the design standards. Once you narrow down the sections specific to your exam, the material is very useful. Some of the problems were representative of the exam, and others were so complex, they could never be solved in the average 6 minutes per problem (at least not by me). It is good to work those more complex problems for your depth area, so you have a better understanding of the topic. For the exam though, you might have to do two or three steps of those really complex problems.

WHY WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK!?!?
By JakeTheSnake35
Hold on a second . . . I'm confused why anyone is even buying this book other than just wanting to expand their personal library!

First off, from the 13th edition to the 14th edition the only code that updated is the AASHTO that went from 2010 to 2012. All the others (ACI 318, ACI 530, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, and NDS) stayed the exact same as the 13th edition! AND even though the AASHTO code was updated it is STILL out of date of the current NCEES PE Exam tested material. Here's a link to NCEES design codes tested for the Civil/Structural:

So-so
By Donald F. Lessnau
While there were some helpful and interesting techniques sprinkled throughout the book, a lot
of the so-called non-confrontational ploys sounded like empty appeasements to folks who wouldn't
be interested or willing to hear another side.
I think Gabor got a little side-tracked and his "assertive" techniques lacked some aggressive boundary setting
principles. A lot of his assertive techniques amounted to little more than insincere and disingenuous
flattery to try and soften up the difficult person. And a real tough customer will see right through
that garbage immediately and chew you up before you get started.
Much better to stress stating personal opinions and boundaries rather than tossing up fluffy, phony
compliments that you both know you even remotely mean in the futile hope the other guy will somehow all of a sudden decide to be someone he's not and consider your feelings or ideas. Pretty naive.
Not bad but not exceptional.
