The Tantra of Great Bliss: The Guhyagarbha Transmission of Vajrasattva's Magnificent Sky, by Christopher Wilkinson

This volume contains two Tantras: the Tantra of Great Bliss and the Tantra of the Natural Intent of the Heart. Both of these Tantras represent a meeting of the Atiyoga tradition and the Mahayoga, and offer us an insight into the interrelationship of these two classes of Tantra as they are brought together. We are gradually introduced to a seed syllable and to mandalas both physical and sonic, elaborately described in colorful detail. Practices are described, including a graphic description of sexual yoga, while we are reminded that there is no practice or meditation. The translations in this book were done based on Tibetan manuscripts, images of which are included. The Indian source works have been lost in time. The Tibetan texts we have are translations made by Vairochana, a famous Tibetan translator who went to India in search of the literature on instantaneous enlightenment in the Eighth Century of our era. His biography recounts his finding a teacher, Sri Singha, who had the transmission, but did not have the books, as the King had put them under lock and seal due to a disturbance involving a prostitute and a nun. So Sri Singha and Vairochana broke in to the palace by night, broke the seals, and stole the books. Then, over a period of many years, Vairochana studied these texts under Sri Singha. It is certain that Vairochana carried finished translations of several works with him when he returned to his country. The Tantras here translated are among the source works that inspired such great Tibetan luminaries as Longchen Rabjampa (1308-1364), Jigme Lingpa (1729-1798), and Mipham Gyatso (1846-1912). It is clear that the thinking within them was found critical to an understanding of the profundities of the Great Perfection, even hundreds of years after Vairochana’s translation, and that those who sought to reconcile the inspiration of the Great Perfection with the practical realities of a practicing path, such as the Mahayoga, found them to be critical to their understanding. The Tantras come to us from out of the same basic time period as the works of Saraha, and do discuss the Mahamudra at numerous points. Those who study the early roots of the Mahamudra transmission and its relationship to the Great Perfection transmission will find these Tantras helpful. Those who study the debate regarding instant verses gradual enlightenment will find these works a valuable resource.

About the Author
Christopher Wilkinson began his career in Buddhist literature at the age of fifteen, taking refuge vows from his guru Dezhung Rinpoche. In that same year he began formal study of Tibetan language at the University of Washington under Geshe Ngawang Nornang and Turrell Wylie. He became a Buddhist monk, for three years, at the age of eighteen, living in the home of Dezhung Rinpoche while he continued his studies at the University of Washington. He graduated in 1980 with a B.A. degree in Asian Languages and Literature and another B.A. degree in Comparative Religion (College Honors, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa). After a two year tour of Buddhist pilgrimage sites throughout Asia he worked in refugee resettlement programs for five years in Seattle, Washington. He then proceeded to the University of Calgary for an M.A. in Buddhist Studies where he wrote a groundbreaking thesis on the Yangti transmission of the Great Perfection tradition titled “Clear Meaning: Studies on a Thirteenth Century rDzog chen Tantra.” He proceeded to work on a critical edition of the Sanskrit text of the 20,000 line Perfection of Wisdom in Berkeley, California, followed by an intensive study of Burmese language in Hawaii. In 1990 he began three years’ service as a visiting professor in English Literature in Sulawesi, Indonesia, exploring the remnants of the ancient Sri Vijaya Empire there. He worked as a research fellow for the Shelly and Donald Rubin Foundation for several years, playing a part in the early development of the Rubin Museum of Art. In the years that followed he became a Research Fellow at the Centre de Recherches sur les Civilisations de l'Asie Orientale, Collge de France, and taught at the University of Calgary as an Adjunct Professor for five years. He has published several volumes of translations of Tibetan literature, and is currently engaged in further translations of classic Buddhist literature.

... a series of translations by Christopher Wilkinson of the Great Perfection Tantras
By Book Drawn
This translation is a welcome addition to a series of translations by Christopher Wilkinson of the Great Perfection Tantras. As the introduction points out, Great Perfection or Atiyoga is an instantaneous approach to enlightenment. As with all his translations, Christopher Wilkinson has made these tantras reader friendly. The texts flow easily so the reader may find he or she is getting ahead of themselves, for the content is profound and requires reflection. Two Indian tantric texts translated from Tibetan are covered: The Tantra of Great Bliss and The Tantra of the Natural Intent of the Heart. These are the basic texts, sans commentary. On one level the reader can enjoy the poetic sound, on another these texts represent the highest teachings of Buddhism, long secret to the western world. It goes without saying for most this is not the place to begin a Buddhist practice. It is a place for all to experience.

In terms of length, the Tantra of Great Bliss dominates the book. From the samadhi of primordial liberation, the Buddha’s words flow in rhythmic waves, one upon another in a crescendo leading towards pristine awakening. Perhaps these tantras are best read over time; if your mind wanders for a moment the line by line import is missed. If that happens double back, don’t miss what turns out to be gold throughout.

Dirty Secrets About Unemployment
By H. Levin
With the recent severe downturn in the economy, the subject of unemployment has been getting a lot of attention in the corporate news. However, the true causes of unemployment--as well as the identities and motives of its influential proponents--are carefully avoided. Unemployment: The Shocking Truth... takes a refreshingly candid look at this vital national issue, its actual causes, and what can be done about it.

This is a well-researched yet easy-to-read book. In it, the author documents the tenacious opposition of the most powerful business associations to full employment, describing the many lucrative other benefits they reap from keeping large numbers of the population unemployed. He shows how unemployment is created by the rising inequality in income and wealth, and the actions that big business takes to create millions of layoffs. Those actions include: introducing advanced technology, exporting of American jobs, merging of corporations and importing cheap labor.

No less serious for working people are the periodic interest rate increases of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Mr. Stone goes on to delineate unemployment's many outrageous consequences for working people and their families, as well as for all other Americans.

He also shows how the creation of a full employment society will require dealing with the bitter opposition to it by the business class. A variety of badly needed projects can then be carried out to create a vibrant and healthy society that could provide work to all the presently jobless millions. The funding for such a program can come from a steep reduction in the incredibly swollen and wasteful military budget, from the billions of tax dollars that corporations used to pay in the past but are no longer paying, and from the billions of tax dollars the jobless would pay once employed.
Fifteen excellent cartoons illustrate some of the book's more important points.

This book is essential for an understanding of how and why unemployment is artificially maintained by the powers that be.

Compared to the Official ISACA study guide, this was much easier to get through. I haven't taken the exam yet, so I can't comment on how relevant the material is to what is on the exam.

I thoroughly enjoyed studying this book
By B. Hodge
I thoroughly enjoyed studying this book, and knew the material VERY well. BUT... I counted exactly 5 questions out of the 150 questions on the actual cert exam that were covered sufficiently in this book. In addition, the practice questions in the book and on the included exam had numerous questions requiring two or more answers. On the actual exam, all questions required one and only one answer.

I started by emailing the publisher to let them know of the issues, but did not get an adequate response, so... My suggest? DO NOT purchase this book.

Eleanor Roosevelt was born into the privileges and prejudices of American aristocracy and into a family ravaged by alcoholism. She overcame debilitating roots: in her public life, fighting against racism and injustice and advancing the rights of women; and in her private life, forming lasting intimate friendships with some of the great men and women of her times. This volume covers ER's family and birth, her childhood, education, and marriage, and ends with FDR's election to the Presidency--the years of ER's youth and coming of age.

Celebrated by feminists, historians, politicians, and reviewers everywhere, Cook's trilogy is an unprecedented portrait of a brave, fierce, passionate political leader of our century.

This highly readable, well-researched work of feminist scholarship erases the image of the young Eleanor Roosevelt as a long-suffering, repressed wife and presents her as a strong, ever-evolving individual. Photos.

From Kirkus Reviews
From Cook (History/John Jay; The Declassified Eisenhower, 1981, etc.)--the first volume of a massive biography of Eleanor Roosevelt, which, in seeking redress for its subject, is flawed by its own (feminist) biases. Long overshadowed by the achievements of FDR, Eleanor Roosevelt's own extraordinary life deserves wider attention. The poor little rich girl who was born into one of New York's wealthiest and most distinguished families was unkindly called ``Granny'' by her beautiful but cold mother; lost both her parents before she was 12; was taken in by relatives who made her always feel an outsider; and, once married, had to contend with a tyrannical mother-in-law and a philandering husband. And yet, Cook tells us, there were triumphs and periods of fulfillment-- schooldays in London; ventures into politics and civic activities; and the golden interlude of the 1920's, when ER led her own life independent of FDR, becoming a sought-after speaker, activist, and commentator. Cook conscientiously records the achievements and the many unhappinesses--not just the discovery of FDR's affair with Lucy Rutherford--as well as the consolation of friends, mostly women (though Cook believes that ER had an affair with Earl Miller, one of the Roosevelts' security guards). The volume ends with FDR's election to the presidency, an achievement about which, for FDR's sake, ER was ``sincerely glad''--but which also led her to comment, ``Now I shall start to work out my own salvation.'' In less-than-luminous prose, ER gets her uncritical due while FDR becomes the typical male villain--duplicitous, weak, and owing everything to a good woman. Informative but not definitive. "...assertive, independent, and bold."
By Robert S. Clay Jr.
Eleanor Roosevelt's passions impress those who recall her later public image as a dowdy grandmother-type. No cracks about prominent teeth, please. Author Blanche Wiesen Cook does a commendable job of telling a familiar story from a fresh perspective. This book details ER's life from childhood to the beginning of her career as First Lady. The theme of the book is ER as "assertive, independent, and bold." As long as she lived by other people's expectations, ER was stifled. After she asserted her independence, she was happier and more successful. "She feared rigidities," Cook asserts. She abhorred the judgmental absolutes that she thought contributed to her parents' problems and early deaths. ER aspired to walk in the humanist footsteps of her mentor and great teacher, Marie Souvestre. Intriguing questions of ER's private life remain unanswered because she destroyed many of her personal letters and papers. Her marriage to Franklin Roosevelt was mercurial, and the boundaries grew undefined. After 1918, a crisis year in their marriage, ER formed a number of associations with women social activists. She embarked in new directions, and tirelessly supported women's issues. Ironically, she opposed the 1920s version of the equal rights amendment because she felt it would remove protections that women enjoyed under the laws of that time. Woven through the tapestry of the narrative are questions of ER's love life. Her close working friendships with lesbian activists, at minimum, suggest Sapphic possibilities. ER's views of love and sex were nonconformist, and included men and women. Both Earl Miller and Lorena Hickock played special roles in her life. Cook writes of Eleanor Roosevelt as a three-dimensional woman of joy and sorrow. This book is an eye opening and enjoyable read. Highly recommended. ;-)

Angry about neglected history
By SueCBDR@aol.com
I thought I was a decent student of American history; well, I am, sort of. Of MALE American history.
Not once in all my years of school have I ever had a history class that focused on the great women leaders in our nation's history--including Eleanor Roosevelt. It is a travesty that needs to be rectified ... and it can be by reading this biography of Eleanor Roosevelt.
What a woman! Was she perfect? No. Did she always do the right thing? Nope. Was she always presented in the best possible light? Nada.
Instead, what Blanche Cook did was present a portrait of a very real Eleanor Roosevelt--warts and all.
I never once gave consideration to reading about Eleanor--until I read a NEW YORK TIMES' review of the second volume of the biography. It compelled me to purchase the first; I will now read the second. I would encourage any and all women to do the same simply because what we have been able to accomplish in today's world can be directly connected to Eleanor Roosevelt, her contemporaries, and her mentors.
We owe it to her legacy; we also owe it to the children of today's schools to learn about her in our history classes. These women deserve mention as much--if not more--than the heroes of the Revolutionary War, the great presidents, the fighters of the Civil War, the World Wars, etc., etc.

Explores New Ground on a Famous Woman
By Dana Keish
Most books that I have read on Eleanor Roosevelt stress that no matter how revolutionary she might have seemed, she lived her life within certain bounds for her time. Yet this book demonstrates that the historical character and the real woman are very different. The author portrays Eleanor as a woman who did not find herself until her mid-thirties and then was determined to live as she wanted. Her marriage to Franklin was not fulfilling and she needed more. She found this with various life long friends who shared her passion for politics and social change. The author does an excellent job staying on track, and keeping Eleanor in the forefront. This is definitely not a biography of Franklin! I found the information on the early life of Eleanor to be especially interesting, in how so many of the obstacles that she faced as a youth played a large role in how she dealt with others the rest of her life. Her childhood is hearbreaking and I can't help but think that even for all her wealth and priviledge, how sad her childhood was. She seemed to search all her life to find a home and finally decided to create her own with her friends, not her family. Even though she had five children, their lives were controlled by her mother-in-law, Sara Delano Roosevelt. Rather than become depressed at the various obstacles presented by her life, she rose above them and ultimately became a very fulfilled and happy person.
