This is an honest, inspiring memoir.

In a world that is so obsessed with the 'after photo', this book tells the true story of what happens AFTER that shot is taken. As a health coach, I know how important this story is to the world right now: on the path towards greater self-awareness and self love, cultivating compassion, courage, kindness and community is so much more important than the number on the scales. As well as that powerful message, I loved this book purely for its descriptions of life in Melbourne and London and I saw a lot of my own journey mirrored in Philippa's. I was sad to finish it and immediately wanted more!

I enjoyed Philippa Moore's book "The Latte Years" so much!

I appreciated the author's excellent writing, honesty, and insights. She utilized humor perfectly, and I didn't find it heavy or heartbreaking in the least - far from it! Because of the inspiring element found within "The Latte Years" I was glued to my Kindle starting with the very first page. Reading it was my nightly reward for getting through the day raising two energetic little ones.

As a female author who's currently on a quest to shed some extra weight, I particularly valued the theme on what happens *after* a weight loss. That's when the real work begins, and the way in which Ms. Moore depicts her post-weight loss journey is not only entertaining and motivating, but also invaluable. She doesn't sugarcoat any part of her life, and by being brave enough to share the "warts" of her behavior, she provides the reader with an engrossing read.

Although I'm in my mid-forties, I found much to learn from her relationship struggles and life lessons she experienced during her twenties. As someone who traveled solo from San Francisco to Melbourne (specifically St Kilda/Prahran, which are areas mentioned in the book) when I was 24, I had a blast reading about the author's time there, particularly when she shared a house with two cheeky male roommates. It was also fascinating to read about her childhood in a place not that many read about: the island of Tasmania, which is 240 miles south of the Australian mainland. As a former long-distance runner I got a big kick out of, well, I don't want to spoil anything, but it has to do with running! It didn't hurt that part of the book takes place in England since I'm an Anglophile, so that was icing on the cake. (No pun intended.) How about the carrot in the salad? (groan.)

A candid account about getting on the dreaded scale to shed more than the nagging kilos

Philippa nails her soul search in this anecdocte: "Growing up in a small town does one of two things to a person – it either breeds a fierce desire for independence and adventure, so you leave as soon as you can or it gives you Hotel California syndrome (as in, you can check out whenever you want but …)" . However, her lack of self esteem, her abundance of self doubt, her poor choices which ranged from all she stuffed in with regards to food, and the quick 'yes I do' to the first 'suitor' who barely proposed but took his dance lessons seriously; quickly shoved her desire to the back of her oversized closet.

Philippa got it when one day no matter how hard she tried to lift the size 18/20 pants up, they just wouldn't zip up. She looked at recently developped pictures and all but threw up... that was it and as she put it: "Becoming conscious of what I had actually been doing to myself had frightened me".

Gladly enough, this time she had had enough and something had to be done. She started out with the scale and both her eyes and heart near collapsed at the figure she read. Thanks to the encouragement of her friends, family and above all herself, she finally got to her ideal weight. But, it was a journey that involved so many loses and many more marvelous gains. Not only did she shed the kilos as the after photo will show, she shed her old self for a fresh new self confident and independent her. She even ran full and semi-marathons, travelled quite some and met her soul mate. She admits it to the core when she writes: "I had proof in front of me that if I tried, I would find out what I was capable of. It was an amazing feeling that I clung to with all my might".

Thank you Philippa for sharing your incredible journey with us, your physical and mental aches, your bizzare and super friends, your ever supportive family, and above all a glimpse into your soul mate and your marriage. I will sincerely be failing myself if I give this book any less than a 5 star. I have pretty much walked some of her shoes and closet, and I do mean it when I say I wholeheartedly recommend this memoir to all.

Missing Pages, but Good

The book was in good condition despite missing index pages. A great price can't be mad when the bookstore charges you $90 for a brand new copy and they sell it for $6 on Amazon.

The most influencial book on Prayer I've ever read

My title says it all. This small book is big on the theology of prayer. But it isn't written in a text book manner. Instead, this "unknown Christian" simply goes to the Scripture and points out to the reader how important prayer is to the life of a believer. The first chapter alone gets your attention. In it the author states that a person's greatest regret, once in heaven, will be to look back and wonder why he or she didn't pray more. When a person realizes how much can be gained by praying, it should astound us that we don't do it more.
This is one of the few books I own that is such a classic that I read it every year. It never grows old, because its message is truly timeless. I highly recommend it to new and older Christians of every persuasion!

This book has been an exceptional encouragement to me, and any Christian who reads it, I believe, will be taught more about effective, fervent prayer that touches the heart of God. The author addresses real issues which we all must grapple with and settle in our own hearts if we are to pursue a deeper life of prayer.

A super short story that can be quickly read in a single sitting, with a concise description of an alternate world in which social credits are used as payment, and a man with a terminal medical condition faces some challenges. A lot of heavy topics seemed to be crammed into these few pages, but it definitely makes me think, “What would I do?” And how money factors into almost everything we do. But just how true is the phrase “Time is money” when you’re referring to your time left on earth. A great read if you like short stories with a lot of depth.

Allan J. McDonald retired as vice president and technical director for advanced technology programs at ATK Thiokol Propulsion in 2001. He was the director of the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Project at the time of the Challenger accident and, later, vice president of engineering for space operations during the redesign and requalification of the solid rocket motors. James R. Hansen, professor of history and director of the Honors College at Auburn University, is the author of First Man: The Life of Neil Armstrong.

Interesting read. The company I worked for manufactured the ...

Interesting read. The company I worked for manufactured the O Ring In question .NASA blew it. Launched the rocket when the temp was below design specs. for the O Ring. I tried to talk people into reading this book, but very few took the challenge. Their loss !!!!!!!!!!

Epitaph for Challenger STS-33/51-L: Power Play on a Grand Scale

The book "Truth Lies, and O-Rings" written by Allan J. McDonald, with James R. Hansen as co-writer is a fitting epitaph for one of the most disturbing technological catastrophes in modern time. Allan J McDonald is the retired vice president and technical director for advanced technology programs at ATK Thiokol Propulsion, the company that made the Solid Rocket Booster for NASA's Shuttle program. James R. Hansen is professor of history and director of the Honors College at Auburn University, and author of the book "First Man" an award-winning biography of Neil Armstrong.

At the end of the book McDonald has taken us on a tour de force and we are confronted with the conclusion: It is not one factor alone that triggers a catastrophe, but many factors interacting together. This is true whether the accident is big or small. Some twenty years ago I was responsible for investigating why some biomedical apparatus used on patients in hospitals sometimes caused internal damages in them, and also deaths. And the conclusion was that the accidents had many sources interacting together. The daunting task is to cast light on that part of the interaction where the mistake(s) are being made. This work is especially critical when there is a man-machine interface, such as in NASA's Shuttle program. Allan J. McDonald has demonstrated that not only is this kind of work necessary, it is also beneficial for society as a whole; reason has limits and we must learn from our mistakes before we can proceed forward. The book is a "gold mine" for investigators within technological companies, insurance and financing, police and Government Agencies. Rarely do we have access to so much credible information from a source being at the very center of the overlapping interactions, from the President of the United States, Ronald Regan and down through NASA and its main sub contractors. And we shall never forget that we as corporations and individuals are here to serve the people, in this case the seven wonderful astronauts - who were overshadowed and sacrificed on that cold morning January 28, 1986.

I had no problems reading McDonald's investigative book. However, on the middle of page 465 I had to close the book for a while and take a pause. "Jane Smith, widow of Challenger Pilot Michael Smith, was very upset by what she had observed from the publicly televised hearings of the Roger Commission. She had also learned that the astronauts really had survived the explosion and had not been killed instantly as NASA first reported. Close examination of the flight films revealed the crew cabin separating intact from the rest of the orbiter after the explosion. People interested in or working with the subject "parallel and overlapping scenarios" should definitely buy this book; it's a gem! Author Allan J. McDonalds unique perspective makes this book required reading for researchers interested in the complexity of the Challenger catastrophe and it's consequences.

A must read...

A must read for anyone interested in the space program, or disasters in general. Does an excellent job of detailing how a subtle engineering failure coupled with a culture of profit-driven scheduling evolved into one of the worst disasters in NASA's history.
