Great commentary on the Life of St. Benedict

This commentary is very nice and is in fact, a collection of writings on the subject put together in one volume. This threw me a bit at first because it seemed as if the commentary jumped around quite a bit. However, what is happening is that the text is presented, along with three or four different thoughts and interpretations of the text. This provides a depth in the spiritual understanding of the text which is not seen in other books on the subject. In addition, unlike some of the more modern commentators, De Vogue and Costello do not simply dismiss the miracles performed by the great saint. Rather, they put them into a Biblical context of the miracles performed by Elisha, Elijah, etc. which ties in Benedict with those great men of Faith who came before him.
All in all, I recommend the text highly and I believe that anyone looking to understand Benedict's life and the impact that it had on today's Catholic Church, as well as his associated spirituality, will enjoy this book and find much which is edifying.
