I am an early reader and great fan of this book - and a huge admirer of Dr. Jim O'Connell. His thirty years of devoted, compassionate service to the homeless and poor of Boston is a story worth telling and sharing. That he writes with such elegance (a fellowship in theology and philosophy at Cambridge University before attending medical school helped set him on a unique journey - both professional and personal) is a treat -- and a provocative education -- for the reader. You will be invited "inside the tent" of a world-renowned "street doctor" who frames the arc of three decades of public health, homelessness, public policy, and persistent poverty through gently-told (sometimes tenderly amusing, with equal parts optimism and concern) patient stories. You will marvel at the practice of the profession and the capacity to care for "the least of these" as lived out with such passion and humility by Jim and carried out so fully by his colleagues at Boston Health Care for the Homeless.

A great insight into homeless life on the streets in America, Dr. Jim O'Connell tells of his decades as a street medicine doctor to Boston's unsheltered homeless population. He tells without agenda the gritty truths, many of which are hard and do not end well, of interacting with a slice of humanity that surrounds us but are often not seen or cared about except to move them out of the way of progress. Dr. O'Connell's deep philosophical, spiritual, and humanist approach is pure. A must read for anyone who works with impoverished and disenfranchised populations or for those who want to learn more. The reader will not be disappointed.

Should be requried reading

This book is very informative. As someone who practiced law in a mill city for 30 years, I have to say, the author has captured the reality of how birth does not deal us all an equal hand. I think this should be a required read at all suburban public, private, and other prep schools. People need to learn about the reality of the homeless and mentally ill and this book is a real reality check. Any one of us could end up there or have someone we love end up there.
